I don't think the GBA is quite up to the task of a Java VM... it'd be cool if they did one for the DS though.

I suppose the DS could run one of those cellphone JVMs but AFAIK they suck. Badly. Some don't even have a garbage collector and pretty much none are 100% compliant.

Someone should write an executable which is downloadable by WIFI (ala the demos) and use that as a stuck pixel remover.

After contacting Nintendo of Japan, their policy towards dead
pixel problem is not good news after all, they will not cover
dead pixel problems under warranty. This is different than what
Nintendo of USA does, but itís the official reply from Nintendo.

Unfortunately, they have shown us the cold shoulder and they
pointed at the user guide, where itís already written that dead
pixels are not a defect. We have not given up after the initial
reply and still asked them via repeated phone calls and emails
if there is still a way to get the systems replaced, unfortunately
without any luck.

Please understand that under the given circumstances we cannot
give you the answer you are looking for, we cannot get the systems
replaced from Nintendo. Attached are the relevant pages in the
user guide and their translations, as well as the emails received
after inquiring directly in Japan.

We have also done some more research on the Internet, and found
that this seems to be with all LCD manufacturers, not only with
Sony or Nintendo. For example it appears that Nokia is only
replacing their 6600 phone when there are more than 3 dead pixels
on the screen, and about PC monitors we even found more info:

HP will only replace a monitor with there are 4 scattered faulty
pixels or 3 clustered.
LG will replace a monitor if there are 2 within a 10cm circle.
NEX-NEC will replace 3 lit, 3 unlit or 6 color.
With Samsung six dead pixels are allowed, or nine, depending on size.
Sony will replace if there is 2 lit, 2 unlit or 4 dead.
Viewsonic will replace if there is 2 lit, 2 unlit or 4 dead.

Having said this, if you believe that your problem will be
considered as ëfatalí by Nintendo, and that they will replace
your unit after inspecting it, please let us know and we will
still issue an RMA number to return your unit to us in Hong Kong.
After we have received your NDS, we will send it to Nintendo of
Japan for repair on a monthly basis, which means that it can
unfortunately take a while. But please understand that if Nintendo
of Japan returns your unit with a note that it will not be replaced,
we are as helpless as you are. Please do not include any extra
items, just the base system itself. They wonít return any extra
items that we forward to them.

Once again we are truly sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Long story short, my DSL would have to pass the "test" from some guy in Nintendo of Japan's QA department and if he doesn't think the problem is bad enough, then it'll be returned to me...after about a month.

Hey, SB, let us know if it works for you. I'd be interested in finding your results. I'll most likely be picking up a DSL after the domestic release, so if I get a stuck pixel then I may have to borrow your GBA flash card.

The JVM on my Zaurus is pretty good, I would think the DS could handle something like that (albeit probably not at the same speed).

But truth be told, if you get yours from a store, you can immediately turn around and swap it for a new DS if it has a stuck pixel(s). My first DS had stuck pixels and I brought it back to Gamestop for another one. Just make sure to boot it up before you leave the store.

I'm stuck with this one so, every night, I'm going to leave it closed and plugged in with the program running to try and eliminate the pixel.

I'm just glad it doesn't interfere with hunters (top screen is absolutely clear).

Jason: The DS has 4MB of RAM that has to hold the VM and the program it's running. I'm not sure about the Zaurus but usually PDAs have a bit more than that.

I'm stuck with this one so, every night, I'm going to leave it closed and plugged in with the program running to try and eliminate the pixel.

I thought closing turns the screen off?

That's a good point, but didn't the original JDK 1.01 from Sun only require 4 MB?

what I meant to say was the JDK would run on a system with 4 MB of total RAM. That includes the computer's OS and the program.

So long as no libraries are loaded the JVM only leaves a couple hundred KB footprint. You'd probably need a more efficient graphics library for the DS (Swing or AWT would not only perform poorly but would require a fair amount of memory themselves), but I would think it would be very doable.

Screens are gorgeous, shape is significantly smaller than the regular DS, the device itself is ultrasexy, thumb nub is gone, volume is a bit weaker than the regular DS, and the D-pad is a little iffy. It feels too loose and makes moving in some games like Animal Crossing a bit cumbersome. It only seems to be Animal Crossing which I have this problem, though. Mario Kart drifting is now a relief on the thumb.

All in all, I am pretty pleased with it. I'd just like very much to get rid of this blasted pixel.

As strange as it sounds, the smoothness of the exterior is pleasant to the touch.

I'm no technophile (and I mean that sexually), but there's something so appealing in the design that you'll find excuses to play it, even when you shouldn't be.

2 of my friends have PSP's and I must say they are rather pleasing to the eye. When I whip out my DSL (NAVY BLUE BABY!!) in hopefully less than a week. They will all have portable-envy and beg to touch the beauty of my blue toy. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH. Inuendo's and the DS... will it ever stop? Touching is good.

36 hour shipping ain't bad. I had it at lunch today. Still adjusting to the different EVERYTHING in terms of learning to hold the system comfortably. So far I'm actually having the hardest time with the bigger stylus.
