What is the Revolution's last secret?
« on: February 24, 2006, 02:43:51 PM »
Ok I resurrected this horse.

I want to know what you think the Revolution's big secret is?  You know the last big Revolution feature Nintendo has yet to reveal.

Now what I want here is a community brainstorm.  As such there is no right or wrong.  So please do not criticize or comment on other people's ideas in this thread.  God knows there's plenty of threads for that. And that goes for me too.  Believe me I'll have a hard time.    But I shall adhere.

What I will do is edit this first post every so often and update it with every idea posted in this thread.  Anyway please no debating or commenting in this thread about the validity of ideas.  Just present a guess and a short description of it and what benefit it will bring the Revolution.

The last secret of the Revolution is

1. Impressive disc format
2.  Software implementation
3.  True 3d (glasses, projection, ...)
4.  Visual Representation
5.  Concept selling game
6.  Wireless video streaming to the TV
7.  Camera functionality in controller
8.  Microphone functionality in controller
9.  Internet support
10.  Visor/Goggles/Virtual Boy 2
11. PLay games downloaded from 'virtual console'  with the new controller
12.  Use any Nintendo character (customized however you want) in any game
13. Optional Snap-On LCD
14. Touch sensitvity on remote controller
15. Some graphical breakthru (mapping technique?, ...)
16. Leverage SD card use as some kind of big feature
17. All games cell-shaded in primary colors only
18. Controller heats up
19.  Gyros in controller will give resistance
20.  No load times
21.  Voice to Text translation
22.  Enhanced DS to REv interface
23.   USB ports exist for a reason
24.  Store virtual consoles games on pc hard drive
25.  Biometrics
26.  Controller also a Voip Phone

All I can think of right now is that the disc format might be something impressive.

Incompatible with all SD TVs! It destroys them. Consuming them whole like a poltergeist vortex.

Um, actually I don't really think there is going to be anything else that blows us away. The "big" idea is the experience with the controller. I don't think there's a lot more they can do without blurring the message. Unless it involves shocking me if I mess up in a game. Negative reinforcement training. Like those mice that press the red button to get a pellet. And those monkeys that prefer cigarettes over food.

I think the big ideas will be in implementation (software). Exactly what, I dunno.
"wow."

I figure the big secret would be some game that really sells the concept.  Nintendo regrets showing Super Mario 64 so soon because by the time it was released copy-cats were already showing up.  Now I think in the end that didn't mattter because the N64 initially sold really well on the strength of that title and that certainly isn't the reason the N64 lost Nintendo the market leader position.  But they have publicly stated they regret that and they've used that logic for hiding other things.

Now they hid Super Mario Sunshine and no one copied the waterpack because it was pretty lame.  So I'm not saying this title is as big of a deal as Super Mario 64 was.  But Nintendo wants it to be and is treating it like it is.  They're going to show off this title with huge grins across their face.  Hopefully they won't be the only ones smiling.

The water pack wasn't really lame. There was NO chance of it being copied, but it was in no way lame. The game's issues don't stem from the water pack.

I think it's wireless streaming to the TV.  The benefit is no cords.  And you can park the REv right next to you and insert your games and movies without getting off your arse.

Camera in the remote controller.  Take pictures of your environment then upload them into the Rev for use in various games.

Microphone in the remote controller.  Control your game with your voice.  HOld the remote like a phone.  Also use the remote for Voice over IP phone calls.

Surf the internet with the Revolution.  Keep in touch with gaming friends.  Check up on gaming scoreboards.  Get the latest gaming hints, secret codes, reviews and walk-thrus.

I really think the remote has a mic built into it.
Nintendo is already doing the mic thing with the DS so it seems natural to bring it to the next level with the REV.
How else are you going to give commands to your virtual puppies in Nintendogs Revolution.

A built in cam could be really cool. Again Nintendo has toyed with this type of thing before. But I think we're more likely to see such a thing for the DS. The evolution of the Gameboy Camera. But who knows maybe a year from now we'll be taking pics with our DS camera and wirelessly uploading them to the REV.

There is no need to stick on a mic on the Rev. Why? Can just give away a cheap cheap one with Nintendogs that goes into the port. That's why there is a port! Same with a camera.

And there's not wireless streaming, we already know it has an output port.

Yeah, attatchments would be better than built in mic & cam. Think about it: turn the controller upside down for some kareoke revolution^2.
A concept selling game is a given. It is required unless the rev is supposed to fail and is actually nothing about the console itself.
WiFi was promised. (I think.) Unless you're referring to a browser, then that would not happen without a 3rd party dev. (see DS)
True 3D? Maybe next, next gen, but not now.
The disc format has to be it.

I was wrong to say "built in" but I do think the remote should come with the mic attachment.
That way all developer will feel free to use it. If it's only included with a certain game, developers will shy away from mic support since most of the userbase won't have it.
Ideally, I think the Rev controller package should have the remote, analog attachment, shell, and mic.

Visor/Goggles:  IT's almost 11 years since the virtual boy.  Nintendo has had the time to fix that experiment gone wrong.  The benefit here is 3d, peripheral vision  and full 360 view with independent aiming.  A truly TV-free experience.

PLay virtual console games with the new controller:  Relive the classics in a new way!!!  Duckhunt with the remote controller?  Jump in Super Mario Bros by nudging the controller up.  A fresh twist on old games.

Use any Nintendo character in any game:  Play as Donkey Kong in Zelda.  As Samus in Metroid.  Anything you want goes.  Customize your characters in any game.

I'd say something leveraging the form factor.  Optional snap-on LCD comes to mind.  Also, the company has not said much about the SD cards--it is unlike them to use an established format, and although bigger/cheaper may be the driving factor, I can't help but think there is more (remember the Animal Crossing SD Adapter for GC?)

Touch sensitivity? Hold the remote tighter to crush on-screen grapes?

I think something to do with the graphics is an obvious one, but who knows.

Before the controller was revealed, everyone assumed it just had a ton of features sort of stuck togetehr randomly. I think the camera/microphone ideas are going down the same route. A mic I can see, but it wouldn't really warrant Nintendo's attitude (remember that comparison to the DS, in which someone implied that the freehand was the easier aspect of the Rev to understand?) No, as Mario said, it's probably something to do with graphics. Let's think about it logically: Nintendo has said they don't want to compete directly, they want to be different. They won't show screenshots for fear they'll be misunderstood. Their hardware is by far the cheapest of the bunch. This allows only one conclusion:

All Rev games will be cell-shaded in strictly primary colors.
Defenestration - the only humane method of execution.

I had a great post and lost it.  :'(

Controller heats up.

Stereotopic goggles.  The split being done by hardware.  Be less work for the system and it would give even well designed older games depth.

It'd be great if it was wireless streaming to the t.v. but i honestly think it'll be gyros in the controller that can give resistance, like a rumble pak version 7.0, looking at life through the eyes of a tired hub

Voice to text translation.  Obviously the controller would probably have a mic too, but the kewl thing here is no keyboard needed for inputting text.

Well, they could always include it as an attachment with their game. Nintendo has said that attachments will be cheap and easy to make.

The controller vibrates, furthering their hold on the female demographic.

Seriously, it has to be the graphics and something about them. There's no way in hell they'd hold off a screenshot of all the games for THIS long unless there was something worth hiding.

If the graphics suck, why hide them? They'll only be disappointing come E3 and no amount of controller innovation is going to change that.

Because presumably people will be focused on the experience of playing at E3, and this will overshadow the graphics.
