-Cheesy voice acting and live actors are back from the PS1 version.

-Tank controls are back, except that holding L pulls out the knife (ala RE4) and it's ideal for knocking zombies down with a gun and finishing them with a knife.

-Door loading sequences are in, but can be skipped by pressing a button.

-180° turn is in for quick escapes.

-Rebirth mode = 80% more zombies, 0% more ammo (at least that I've found, thus far).

-The knife slashing scenes are quite intuitive, but they happen without warning when you enter a room so you seldom have time to ready the stylus. Tapping the screen will stab while dragging a finger/stylus across will result in a slash. Enemies killed in this fashion can drop items and upon returning to the same room, the knife scene may start again, possibly giving you the chance to replenish items, so long as you're quick on the draw.

-Ink ribbons are back (boo!).

Thanks for the impressions! I think it's safe to say I won't be buying this one (not a big fan of RE or horror) but I was curious to know how it came out.

I'll have more as I go on.

-I may have been wrong about the ammo, but I've not seen what the game intends to throw in my path just so I can't be sure.

-The knife seems to be stronger than it has been in past games, making it possible to actually put fewer bullets into a zombie, finishing them with the knife as the next stroke will knock them to the ground where you can finish them.

I hear they're not done with the RE remakes, as RE2 is coming to the PC...for the second time. Wouldn't be surprised if they brought that to the DS too, as RE2 is on everything else, pretty much.

I'm surprised they kept the cheesy voice acting and live actors for this one, though, ick.

If they have to remake every RE (again), they should ALL be remade to include Ada. Because she's HAWTT and hasn't been killed off yet and even if she was, she could probably come back as a zombie and still be HAWTT. Or at least cute like Shantae's Rottytops.

Well RE2 was on the N64, and the DS is like a better version of N64 (power-wise) so it should work, right?

It's exactly the same as the original PSX version, so yes. There's also an option to play with a few added touch screen puzzles and whatnot but it still has the fixed camera angles and the tank controls.

I personally like the rebirth mode its very interesting, I know a couple of people at school with this game so I'll report back on how the multiplayer is.

Good deal.

Haven't had the chance to try multiplayer just yet so I'm curious to how it is.

-You do wind up getting more ammo as you go on.

-The knife-scenes are cute but not terribly intuitive: you can do about the same with your fingernail as you can with the stylus since you'll be wildly slashing away to prevent being bitten instead of aiming for a particular target most times.

-Using the L trigger to knife is a huge plus and changes a great deal of the strategy. For one, your knife doesn't take up an inventory slot and you can use it in many situations to save bullets, like shooting a dog once, then running over to it and stabbing it on the ground (works like a charm).

-The touchscreen puzzles are only a mild distraction in rebirth mode. Haven't tried classic yet.

-The "Hard" mode doesn't seem that hard (Playing as Chris is supposed to be the hard mode while playing as Jill is easy mode).

-In rebirth mode, you'll encounter a few situations where 2-3 zombies will attack you at once and will take turns biting you until you die (as soon as you shake one off, the next one jumps on you with no real chance to run or somehow push them away).

-Aiming up with the shotgun as a zombie approaches you is still a insta-headshot.

I've realized that the knife combat is far more intuitive than I gave it credit: if you time your slash right before an enemy attacks, you'll kill them in one hit.

Also, there's at least one knife-only boss in the game.

How fast do you think the game can be beaten (considering the <2 hour runs in previous versions) without resorting to bonus weapons?

Same as the PS1 version, I'd wager.

I played the rebirth mode which includes far fewer puzzles and more enemies, but I ended the game with over 50 rounds of shotgun and magnum ammo still unspent, so one could probably advance through the game quicker than I did.

I picked this game up a few days ago. I don't know what it is, but I'm a sucker for Resident Evil games.

Anyways - I never played the original PlayStation game (only the REmake on the GameCube). My initial impression of RE:DS is that it's damn impressive. Not because of anything groundbreaking. Let's keep it real, it's a port of a 10 year old Playstation game and it looks just like it's dated, 32-bit source.

What makes this title a truly amazing feat is the fact that Capcom was able to squeeze the entire first Resident Evil game onto a DS gamecard without sacrificing any of the FMV and/or dialog, while still making it look quite good. Sure the live-action sequences are beyond cheesy, but this is a piece of gaming history and it's commendable that Capcom was able to preserve the entire RE1 experience on the DS and then add some unique DS features and game modes on top of that.

It's just like how Capcom was able to port RE2 to the N64 in it's entirety. Nobody thought RE2 would be playable on the N64 because of the space limitations of the catridges that system used, but low and behold Capcom not only pulled it off (complete with all FMV cutscenes and dialog), but managed to take advantage of the N64's higher resolution and deliver the best-looking version of the game (well the FMV was highly compressed, but still...)

I still want to try out multiplayer, but I've yet to convince anyone around me to buy the game as well.

eh? Capcom did not do the port to the N64, They Published it but the Real Credit goes to Angel Studios Who did the hardwork on porting RE2 to the 64

Yeah....I'm gonna have to go and disagree with you there. The pre-RE4 games have a fixed camera angle for a reason. Call me a RE fanboy (because I am!) but I like all the Resident Evil games the way they are. Except Gaiden. BOO!

The pre-RE4 games have a fixed camera angle for a reason.

And that reason was that prerendered backgrounds look stupid when viewed from another angle.
