Why is it called DS Lite?
« on: February 08, 2006, 06:10:03 PM »
If you look at the pics where they measure the system (the FCC images), it's about 1/4 inch smaller in all dimensions...I don't see the point, other than the new color scheme and the buttons are higher up. The GB Micro is just that, micro, but the DS Lite is hardly Lite if you ask me. I guess those are just prototype pics, but if that's the final design, there's barely a difference. Here's the size, according to the FCC images

Height (closed)
DS = 3-3/8" DS Lite = 3"

Height (open)
DS = 6" DS Lite = 5-5/8"

Width
DS = 5-5/16" DS Lite = 5-1/2" (actually longer than DS)

Thickness
DS = 7/8" DS Lite = 1" (that's kind of estimating, assmuming that the DS is flush against the bottom ruler in this image http://media.ds.ign.com/articles/686/686966/img_3380122.html)

They should just call it the Nintendo DS and stop making the old model.

Could it be that it's not only smaller, but also has a back light control function? Meaning you can control the brightness.

The DS Lite is the weight of 1.5 GBA SP's, instead of 2 GBA SP's. That's much nicer, especially considering that weight was a problem with the original DS.

But the reason Nintendo is calling it a DS "Lite" is because the screens are supposedly brighter and have more settings. That's the part Nintendo wants you to look at. Those are the reason Nintendo's going to be charging more for it. You can charge more for better screens. And maybe for upgraded firmware enabling online Pictochat. You can't charge more because they saved $0.05 on the outer casing.

Compare the new and old GBA SPs: the screens are INSANELY different.

I'll be buying a DS lite and retiring my existing one to being a permanent AC town for my friends.

Because it has fewer calories? Plus they misspelled light.

But really Lite is a good word if you want to convey both brighter and smaller.

I didn't take the brighter screen into play, or the weight...even though the original system weighs like what 8-9 ounces? Also, it's not really the firmware preventing online Pictochat, it's Pictochat itself, which is built-in software.

Taking both the dimensions and masses into account, is it actually lighter?

Here's the actual comparison:

The new screen style makes it more difficult to see the pixels, resulting in a clearer image.

The actual volume of the DS Lite (when closed) is larger, 16.5 cubic inches vs 15.68 cubic inches for the standard DS.

Wait...if we're talking "actual volume", then why would it matter if it was closed or not?  Wouldn't it still take up the same amount of space?

It's called the DS Lite because not only is it 20% lighter than the original DS, it's also brighter, increasing light shown through the screen.  Plus, Light is  so mid 90's

No, that's DS Menthol.

And soon to come: DS Slims!

Yeah, I guess it would be the same. My bad. I personally can't wait for DS Dry...why ask why? And then of course, DS Ultra Light, with only 3 carbs per hour of gameplay.

You just know they're going to release "DS New Formula", which will suck, then they'll release "DS Classic" to make everyone happy again.

Look, I found a picture of the new formula DS...

Notice anything...missing?
