The 360 train wreck
« on: January 05, 2006, 06:09:50 AM »
Just saw Bill Gates on CNN... he was saying that those "March" shipments of the Xbox 360 likely won't be seen until June, and that anyone wanting one should probably plan on waiting until Christmas of 2006, when they expect there to be a good supply.

Wait until Christmas?  Oh man.  Now there's an opportunity for Sony or Nintendo.  The year head start is completely nullified if people can't even buy a 360 until the other consoles come out.

I wonder how third parties are going to take this.  If MS can't get enough units out they've essentially put a big cap on potential game sales.

I can't believe that's for serious.  MS is retarded.  What's the point of releasing first if you aren't prepared to manufacture up to 10 million consoles in that first year?

Honestly, I don't think it will be this bad.  Maybe Gatesy is just trying to keep people excited.  "OH NOES!  I had better get one right away!"
That's my opinion, not yours.

Unfortunately for him, this has a very high chance of backfiring...Instead of getting excited there is the possibility that one would go "Oh, more in stock when the PS3 and Revolution come out, so I'll just wait for those two systems..."

I got one to add to bad decisions made by MS.

Xbox 360 external HD-DVD drive that is for movieplaying purposes only to be released in 2006.

so now the 360 has an external cooling unit, external HDD & now am external HD movie drive.
I wonder whats next?

I'll take it one further.  One would go "Oh, I better go out the preorder my Revolution and PS3 now so this doesn't happen to me".

If it really is true, and Microsoft doesn't get more than a few million consoles out there, it could be disastrous for them. By next Christmas, both the Revolution and the PS3 will be in adequate supply too, and they will be new, so there will be more hype for them. I don't understand Microsoft...

Whose to say that the PS3 won't have the same problem? There are some rumors out there that Sony has had hardware setbacks, and a guy from ATI has said that it seems that NVidia's GPU for the PS3 was a rush job because the solution they were working on just didn't pan out...

Meanwhile, the Rev seems to be using more dependable, more down to earth hardware specs... could the Rev be the only next-gen console that isn't an expensive headache to manufacture?

This is absolutely perfect.  I think Katarugi himself said that if Xbox 360 doesn't sell well, a 2007 launch is likely.  With no 360s to be seen, sales aren't going to be good, so Nintendo at least has the leg up on Sony, not to mention no one's going to make the same mistake so Nintendo's going to have the leg up on MS too.  Not to mention with no easily available systems software sales are going to suck...there goes any 3rd party hope MS ever had...

Just yesterday they said that they're still on target to ship 4-5 million by June. So the comments should be kept in perspective. 5 million is still a lot of 360's, even if they don't achieve it until a quarter later.

Do any of you know if Nintendo had this problem that microsoft is having? I never bought a Nintendo console at launch so im wondering if this issue is not limited to MS alone. I would like to know cause i plan on buying a Rev on day 1. So if i need to preorder please let me know. I will kill someone if i have to wait even one day after Metroid Prime 3 hits to play it. That would blow having MP3 in my hands with no Rev, just cause Nintendo couldnt produce enough.

for all this talk about demand for the 360, i could go pick one up off the shelves right now. my local wal-mart has some sitting on the shelves, and has since after christmas. of course, they are only the core systems which nobody wants(and rightfully so).

i personally have never had a problem getting a nintendo console on day one. i always just get there early on launch day.

After seeing how much of a killing you can make on Ebay after selling an Item I am thinking it is completely worth the 12 hour wait.  If I can sell one for $700 then that is a weeks worth of pay right there.  WHOOHOO!!!  (actually much more than a weeks worth for me.)

To add on to it, at the CES Bill Gates did say that 2007 would be the year that both Xbox360 and PS3 will compete against eacht other without having supply problems. He expects X360's supply problems to be solved when 2007 hits... ooh that's nice... this has to be the biggest mistake any consolemaker can make...

The thing is... maybe MS realy jumped the gun, not only on the game-industry but on itself too. Final hardware mere months ready before launch, numerous reports of how much money MS is losing on every X360 sold going from 100 to 250 dollars. I believe their actual planned production facalities aren't ready yet so they're hastly producing Xbox360's by outsourcing production to other factories who have minor modifications of producing the hardware, costing MS a lot more money per unit so they lower production yields on purpose so it wouldn't cost them too much in the long run and wait untill the actual meant to be production facailiteis are ready and running.

In other words, Xbox360 has to be the most rushed piece of hardware ever...

You've heard about the XBox 360 disc-scratching thing, right?

Someone brought back a disc to our store the other day that was scratched from their 360 - perfect circles along the outer edges of the disc - and *DEEP* scratches too.  I'd be PO'ed.

So Microsoft can't get enough machines out in time and, apparently, there's a small, but noticable amount defective (scratching discs, over heating, etc).  GO MS!

Never to this extent... the Gamecube was comparatively scarce in the months after its launch, and the DS was impossible to find for a month or so (hottest item in Christmas of 2004)... even then it's not like the supply wasn't coming in, it was just getting sold as fast as the stores could stock them.

But I've never heard of any system having a 6-7 month window shortly after launch with zero supply coming in... nor of a case where a console was virtually impossible to get until over a year after launch.

Microsoft is the company that pushed this generation to a premature close in the first place. I'd be awfully worried about buying such an expensive product late in the cycle from a company that seems determined to end of life their consoles as soon as possible. If they don't get this sorted out soon they'll already be talking about release dates for the Xbox 720 by the time you can get the 360.

My "final" thought on this is that Gates was shooting his mouth off, or just overestimating demand for the console.  I think Microsoft is probably having more problems than it should be, but I also think it will catch up with demand in a few months.

Of course, the smart thing would be to be able to catch up with demand right now, because it will start to drop as people get tired of waiting.
