EA sends out Warnings!
« on: December 20, 2005, 12:35:06 PM »
...About its financial status. No, unfortunately the behemoth isn't dying, but it didn't make anywhere near the profits it wanted to. Serves them right! I'll nevcer forgive them for closing Westwood Studios...

WARNING: GAME SUCKS.  - should be printed on every EA game box.

"It's almost as if Nintendo knows what it's talking about, but that can't be."

I wouldn't compare EA's situation to Nintendo because the two companies are too different.  EA's very business model is fragile.  They make mainstream pandering junk that's completely disposable.  NO ONE has any passion over EA games.  You play the game for a year and then replace it with a sequel.  EA in reality has no fans and no classic games.  They rely on fads on trends.  Once casual gamers get bored of them they're screwed.

Nintendo however has an actually fanbase and makes classics that stand the test of time.  It's much harder for their customers to get bored of them and thus they have more of a safety net than EA.  Nintendo doesn't pander to fads.  They have a real fanbase and a real legacy.  If the industry shrinks EA is screwed.  Nintendo isn't because the "real" gamers that would stick with gaming after the mainstream lost interest buy their product.

Nintendo might be right about the industry shrinking but they're jumping the gun in thinking that they have to massively overhaul their whole approach and target non-gamers in order to survive that.  Hardcore gamers are who will stick with gaming through good times and bad.  Nintendo is fine as long as hardcore gamers still buy their stuff.

Except for Battlefield 2.

Nintendo brought in a new demograhic with the NES, Sony another one with the PS. Now it's time for bringing in another demographic but only Nintendo is trying that. You could say that Sony's success was an accident.

EA have two series that people are really passionate about.  Madden Football and SSX.

SSX is really their big money maker for non-sports fans, but with each version of the game, I am sure it is getting stale.  (Though that doesn't stop Tony Hawk from still selling.)

EA may create barely above average games, but the licenses they have to create popular characters and franchises will win the day for them...unfortunately.

i really liked tyhe first few tony hawks...but after 2 on dreamcast...they just kept coming out each year and well..whats the point of buying if there is going to be another better one each year?

Though its been so long since i'v bough one that buying a new one is worth it.

EA releases some decent games.  The Sims, Timesplitters, SSX and the Need for Speed series all have their share of excellent titles, as far as I'm concerned.  Also sports fans would probably consider many of EA's sports franchises classic, though maybe not any particular installment stands out.

I'm not a fan of EA, but now that it's not in "buy out the industry" mode, I'm not as annoyed and I feel like defending it a little.  It also has a decent standard of quality, unlike THQ or Acclaim.  EA trash is just forgettable, not completely broken (usually).  I've heard their employees had problems in the past, but that also seems to be done with, and overworked employees seem to be the industry standard, from what I've heard.

EA needs a lot of work, but it's not the worst developer around.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I don't know if EA can go away that easily, after all how many people buy a new madden every year?

But personally I only like what Dice can produce (Battle field 2, greatest FPS out now and only second to perfect dark)

and yes, they should die for killing westwood

I guess you could say that at least EA has the good sense to stay out of Will Wright's way. You gotta give credit where credit is due.

I dont like EA personally, I think most of their games are half arsed and very sloppy or just the same thing dished up on the plate with slighty better graphics and a bigger roster!! Unfortunately I for one must be part of the dont buy EA crap minority as they still seem to be doing quite well for themselves.  I suppose ive also been buy alling EA ever since they became a shark buying out all those smaller developers just to take their IP's and create absolute dribble with them and the working conditions they impose on their employees.  Oh well no sweat off my back I get enough enjoyment nintendo, capcom, square enix, thq, camelot, hudson, retro, sega, you get the drift... so who needs EA??

I think thats what a company game after years and year and years of flooding the market of sequels.

And they should of put some EA characters in Marvel Nemesis to make it cooler such as Baseball Guy,Football Guy, Golf Guy, a generic james bond clone and lets all not forget the most Uber of them all...... CAR!!!

If anything I think it's proving just how flawed EA's business model (buying every developer under the sun) really is. Reminds me a lot of what's going on with Time Warner right now...  you've got management on top of management on top of management, they're not being efficient, and it's hurting the bottom line.

I'd love to see EA do what Carl Icahn is pushing for at Time Warner right now, spin off the different components into seperate companies.

Its weird how noone mentioned Burnout (preferably 3 or 4). It is possibly the most intense racing game ever. Play it on a big screen with a couple of friends and you have yourself a good time.

Burnout is Criterion. EA buying them doesn't mean they made the game. It's like saying that if GM buys BMW then all of a sudden, BMW becomes an American car. It might technically be true but technicality in this instance wouldn’t have much bearing in people’s minds. Same thing with Criterion and Burnout…

THEY closed Westwood Studios!?!?!?! GAH, I was still wating for Tiberian Twilight, (I think that's what they were going to call it). They can go rot. Even Battlefield 2 has a ton of piss poor programing glitches. (honesty, how does the mouse lag? and text input lag? these things shouldn't be an issue)

BF2 was made by DICE and they are still mostly independent.

EA dissolved Westwood. I agree, it sucks that they took away the original C&C setting but at least the gameplay was mostly intact in Generals.

Yes, they should have issued a final patch before moving on, though. The Chinese sathack lv.1 is damn buggy, the aimed missile defender bug (CPU-controlled MDs will use the "lock on" weapon as their normal one after locking on a target once, destroying buildings in no time) still exists and I think there were more issues.
