GPU "Hollywood" Specs revealed??
« on: December 07, 2005, 07:20:21 PM »
I'm not sure if this has been posted in the "2-3 times more powerfull etc...." thread but I couldn't find it when I flipped through it.  Anyways, I've ran into what I believe to be a rumor or leak, aint sure, of the Rev's GPU "Hollywood". I ran into this at the Gamespot forums which was taken from Revogaming.net. Anyway, here's the info.

Quote

One of the two sources who gave us information on IBM's "Broadway" processor today gave us information on the "Hollywood" GPU from ATi. Details inside.

The source provided the following information under conditions of anonymity, as well as some other general Revolution statements:

- "Hollywood" is based on ATi's RV530 GPU
- The GPU has been optimised significantly (more on that below)
- The graphics are not as bad as IGN might make them sound
- The Revolution's RAM, whilst being around 128MB, is highly optimised

Here are the specs for the RV530, thanks to Anandtech:

RV530

600MHz Core Clock
1400MHz Memory Clock
512MB Maximum Memory for "XT"
256MB Maximum Memory for "Pro"
128-bit Memory
12 Pipelines
Maximum 16x32MB 1.4ns GDDR3

High Optimisation

The source described the Revolution's optimisation like this:

Although he acknowledged that Revolution will not be as powerful as 360 or PS3, he said that the optimisation level of Revolution is similar to that of the GameCube: although it did not have the highest hardware specification, it managed to churn out the best graphics in titles such as Resident Evil 4.

RAM

The RAM is 1T-SRAM, as previously reported. The source mentioned some optimisation of the RAM but did not clarify.

We remind you that this source is very trustworthy: the information that we broke exclusively on IBM's "Broadway" is now mirrored in the comments of various developers to IGN.

There is no official word from Nintendo, however. Take this as you will.

RevoGaming will keep you updated.

Well I don't know much about specs so I'll leave the more tech savvy members break that apart and fill me in on weather or not this is possible and if its solid specs to begin with.

I'm sorry, these numbers don't mean anything to me... and even if they did, they wouldn't.

Me neither...All I know is that the Rev is more powerful than the GC and that's all I need to know...

Although he acknowledged that Revolution will not be as powerful as 360 or PS3, he said that the optimisation level of Revolution is similar to that of the GameCube: although it did not have the highest hardware specification, it managed to churn out the best graphics in titles such as Resident Evil 4.

It happened last gen, not too surprised about it happening this time either...

For some reference, the RV530 (also known as the X1600-series ATI cards) are current mid-range parts.

It's in my DNA not to believe anything that comes from a nobody site like revogaming, who will not get information before a CREDIBLE news source. But the specs themselves in theory are within the realm of possibility. Any likeness to reality is coincidence.

Even fillrate and theoretical maxuimum number of triangles per second have more meaning than clock rates.

I just jumped into the way-back machine and read about the Nintendo/Miyamoto press conference when the GameCube was first unveiled.

To smack down the theoretical PS2 power, Miyamoto said that anytime you add an effect, polygon numbers basically cut in half... i.e. 20 million a second can easily become 10 million.

Until further notice, I think I am calling "wait and see" on the Revo GPU until there is actual data to go on. 2x the polygons don’t mean 2x the graphics... according to Miyamoto it would really only mean one more effect can be added.

And even the low-end graphic chips are beasts compared to the GPU in GameCube now... Nintendo would be seriously lowballing themselves (and us) if that's all they decided to go with.

The ATI x300 card can be bought for $40. Wholesale would be dirt cheap... and at 800x600 resolutions it does respectably on even Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 benchmarks (within 30-60 frames per second.)

Also, doubling the clock rate of the GPU (which IGN's sources claimed it does) in this case is more dramatic than it sounds. Flipper was what, 162MHz? The X300 has a core speed of 325MHz. You do the math... that's exactly 2x the Flipper. As KDR mentioned, there's more to it than clock speed that makes it more than twice as fast, though. (Pipelines, fillrate, etc.)

So if "Hollywood" is even anything like the cheap-ass x300, we're still dealing with something pretty ample for standard def.

Without HD support the rev dosn't need spectacular specs.  Don't know if that GPU is correct but sounds reasonable.
