Miyamoto interview! Heaps of news!
« on: February 21, 2003, 12:24:33 PM »
I just read the new miyamoto interview, and there are some very interesting tidbits in there, heres a few highlights

Mario Kart could have been shown in video form there, but Miyamoto said he wanted it to debut at E3, apparantly the game may be finished

Pikmin 2 footage was shown, it has multiplayer

Kirbys Air Ride footage was shown, it looks really fun apparently

Zelda: Wind Waker PAL/US versions will have added features and a few gameplay tweaks that were not in the Japanese version

Nintendo is furthering thier relationship with Namco and Sega, and beggining a partnership with EA

This was at an interview with Miyamoto when he was in London yesterday by the way. Its a very long interview that you can read here . Its a very interesting interview, i recommend you all read it.

We are talking about the mass audience, and many people have different their own ways of making use of entertainment. We as the maker always have a responsibility over how our products are used by the mass market. There are reasons why no companies are willing to market GTA as their product in Japan. At least people have a sense of the danger of the current situation.

More importantly, we need to find something that is a substitute for Grand Theft Auto, in terms of a game that sells. It's our mission to find an alternative that is unique and non-violent. One of the answers is the connectivity offered by GameCube and GBA.

I definately like the sound of that.  The whole concept of GTA has been disturbing to me.  There is little to no gameplay, and the game sells itself on excessive violence.  IMO, the industry would be better without it.

I am quite pleased that Nintendo is not selling out and will remain true to the gamers among those who play video games.

I think he may have hinted at the new and original game he's supposed to be making in the interview. He said at one point that he had recently started a garden and gotten involved with gardening. End of last year, we are graced with Pikmin (I think that there was rumor of that game's layout being based on his actual garden. I don't know if it's true though.) Anyways, he also said in the interview that he had recently gotten a dog and been talking to a dog specialist and had an in-depth conversation on the meaning of "dog" or something. Could it be that this new game he is creating has something to do with a dog? I don't see what he could do with a dog, but then again I didn't foresee Pikmin either.

I think Nintendo really needs to get off the GC GBA connectivity. This is NOT what is gonna get them GTA sales.   They should definitely start putting in old n64 games for preorders like with Zelda. I mean quarter of a million before the preorder program hadn't even started. That's not too shabby folks.  Granted, it is a New Zelda, but there's just something about getting stuff free that intices people.

I dont think they have to get away from GBA-GCN conectivity, this will help their GCN in japan, where GBAs sell by the truck loads but GCN do not. BUT they do have to accept that they will have to push more adult games. Miyamoto says Nintendo does not make Violent games, but they did publish Eternal Darkness. People want it, they need to push more money into their 2nd party development teams like Silicon Knights for violent games like that!

Eternal Darkness wasn't sold on violence though.  It was sold because of the freaking genius that Dyack and co. have.  The violence in the game was very subtle, and it was made clear that the story and gameplay took precedence over a lot of blood and guts.  GTA does no such thing.  That's where the true difference lies.

i agree that nintendo needs to get away from the gba-gc connectivity, at least in north america. This isn't going to sell more systems/games. It may appeal to people who already own a gba and gc, but we aren't going to see people rushing out and buying gc's and gba's just so they can hook them up to get a bonus in some game..  It is a nice feature if used in the right way, but i don't think we've seen that 'right way' yet.
i also agree with cheeser in that they need to have more bonus n64 games to give away with preorders.  they could do it with mario kart, golf, tennis..or better yet, mario 64 when u preorder 128! that would sell like hot-cakes

i think they need to get a few developers just focused on more mature games for the gamecube, much like what silicon knights is doing. if they get more companies like silicon knights and retro working on more exclusive mature games then cube will really appeal to a much wider audience.

Why should Nintendo stop making GCN-GBA link games? It is a unique feature to the GameCube. Its like telling Microsoft to stop making XBox live games. Some developers are starting to use the connection in innovative ways. Ubi Soft is using it for Rayman and Splinter Cell. The GCN-GBA won't bring GTA sales to GameCube? One word: Pokemon. If only a quarter of pokemon r/s owners in japan bought the GCN version, the GCN version would be a million seller.

About the Free games, the only game i could see this working with again, would be either Mario 128 if it comes out this year, or Fzero

Illegal Cheese, I would rather have a great game with good sales than a mediocre game sold mainly because of image and gimmicks.  You have a point, but Nintendo isn't forcing people to do that.   People do it themselves.  If a person think that Nintendo or any game company is making them do anything, they got issues.  I have both a GBA and a GCN and I bought them for the gaming experiences that they offer not because of the connectivity, the added bonus of the connectivity is just icing on the cake.

GTA does have fun gameplay, but unless you're pursuing the challenges, it gets old after a while.

It's sorta wierd, I attribute "deep gameplay" to adult games.  What I find interesting is some gamers use of the term "adult" or "mature" when talking about gaming.  It usually means something more on the order of "juvinile".

I would agree that ED is an intelligent game, and better suited for the "adult" name plate than most.

While the GBA connection has been used minimally in most games, Animal Crossing and Zelda do have much more involved connection features, and I am really interested in seeing how they're going to use it in FFCC, Splinter Cell, and stuff like Roll-o-Rama.

Maybe EA will make the next Sims game exclusive to GameCube, now THAT would move consoles. Or if they want to pay some attention to Europe they could make Fifa exclusive to Gamecube. Or they could put James Bond back where he belongs, exclusive on a Nintendo console (btw, is it possible for Nintendo to re-release Goldeneye on GC, that'd be awesome). Ohhhh, the possibilities..............

You know EA is more than sports. They also control Maxis and several other non sports developers. Sports game don't traditionally sell well on the Gamecube unless it has Nintendo's name on it. So it could be a miriad of EA others liscenses Nintendo and EA are teaming up with. (They are currently in control of the Bond liscense.)

EA is mainly the publisher of games... not really the developers.  They are freakin gigantic with tons of money.. it'll be good.  Maybe they can help get upstarting or lesser known companies going.  They advertise a lot also...

Good thing EA published console games are a lot better than their PC published games which are usually rushed, buggy, and completely unoptimized POS.

They said Mario Kart didn't get a fair share of resources.    I really do hope its online w/ more tracks and possibly some more items... thats all I really want.  Can't make a great game much better.

While it is good to have many different titles on Nintendo, I think what is more important is that we make titles only Nintendo customers can play. That is why it's very important for Nintendo to come up with the best first-party titles and create unique entertainment experiences.

This isalso good. New franhchises and bettergames. Because exclusive titles  are the main attraction to a console.

El Pollo Diablos
Nintendo is going to treat us good:F-Zero and Star Fox Armada, new Pikmin, 1080, Kirby, Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis and 2 or 3 new franchises ( maybe mature).
Planning on buying an Xbox! Now all I nead is a good gamertag for Live!
