Playing against your fellow planeteers online on Rev and DS
« on: November 10, 2005, 01:36:27 PM »

I'm not planning on getting a DS until there is a redesign, but I do plan on having a Revolution the first day.  I would assume most people here will also be getting the console at launch; what do you think it will be like to play against most anyone on planetgamecube for free?

I believe this could bring a whole new dimension to the active Nintendo online community.

Why do want a redesign? What if there is no redesign?

I think it will alert others of my gaming prowess. I will rise to be placed in the middle third of the gaming world...above average of course but still in the middle third.

I'm very exceited to see if people can live up to their claims.  So many people claim that they are the greatest at Mario Kart or Smash Bros....I imagine a lot of people will be smacked over the head with a sock full of TRUTH in the near future.

The only game I'm going to brag on is Fzero on GC.  The only human being who has been able to challenge me is my cousin.  I can't wait to play against Japanese gamers...if we can do that?

I shine best in puzzle driven games like Zelda and Metroid.  I tend to suck at fighting games, but I believe the Revolution remote will change that entirely

I suck like no other at fighting games, yet, I can play Super Smash Bros for hours, enjoying every minute of it, and if I can play with someon else that isnt my brother, awesome, I cant wait!

Everyone else whom I have played with in Fzero is terrible.  It will be excellent to be able to find other hardcore Nintendo console owners to play against.

I never understood why the reviewers docked Fzero's score for being too hard; maybe it should lose a point for the wacky art and ambigously there story, but I felt Ikaruga was far more difficult and did not lose points in reviews for being two steps from impossible.

Well nemo you also have to remember that ikaruga had a infinate life option after certain hours of play so in a sense its only excruciatingly hard if your on a limited life ammount.

Reviewers are notoriously weak at life. That's why. Reports are flooding through of weak dogs dropping out of Mario Kart games but so far only the press have copies. Chances are if you have soemone drop out in your game when they're losing, it'll be an IGN employee or something.

I make no claims as to my awesomeness at Mario Kart.

I am fully aware that you all are probably going to kick my ass...but thats not say I won't make you work for it.

The problem with F-Zero GX's difficulty is that a good chunk of it stems from playing through four long Grand Prix races only to lose all that work because another car bumps you off the track on the final lap of the final race.  I know there's a continue system, but it seems insufficient when the game moves at such a speed and the opponents are so aggressive that it seems there's just no way to defend yourself on the more precarious tracks with no walls.  I think the fact that the AI is so good is definitely in the game's favor, but it literally feels like the computer is cheating by driving the race in such a way that basically all of the other drivers are conspiring against you.  Some of the AI cars will drive so aggressively that they can't possibly win the race; all they care about is knocking you out.  Yeah, that's unfair, and it makes the game frustrating for many of us.  Game difficulty is a complex issue, so if a game reviewer is going to complain about a game being too hard (or not hard enough), he or she needs to back that up with a full explanation of why the game feels unbalanced.  The reason you don't see it happen often is that doing so requires a pretty good understanding of game design, which not all reviewers have.

If I were going to subtract points from Fzero it would be for the wack story mode and zainy character designs.  I found the customization options fun, but I was disappointed I never got to share my vulgarity online to the rest of the world.  I will never know how my craft competes against other people's.  Basically I would have to drive five hours right now to find someone I know who could compete with me at Fzero.  Being able to race a race with twentyeight or a hundred (we don't know what the Revolution could do) other thinking people online will be radically different.  Getting beaten because someone beat you and not because you were killed by a cronie will also be an improvement next gen.  Oh wait, creepy online clan members may take up that kind of crap.

My best strategy for GX is to get ahead of the AI racers as soon as possible; I try to put some distance between myself and those kamakaze nutts.  Sometimes you just have to fight back, killing them as you pass them in the ranks.

The only race that gave me trouble was the last one without borders.  I rely on them like a boxer leans on roaps.
