there is no way to communicate with the people you link up with over wifi.... 1) you cant get there id numbers, 2) NO SMACK TALK.... half the reason mario kart or any other vs game is fun is the SMACK TALK. mario kart ds when you play over wifi will be like playing against bots with original names... no communicatioon , no human feel to them. i for one am pissed.

A strong majority of the best Mario Kart players post on internet forums, so the "adding players" bit isn't a big deal at all...And Mario Kart is Mario Kart, not a chatroom...

The thing with internet gaming is that playing against random strangers in general is like playing against bots... even if you can hear their annoying voices.

Like Bill said, the best part of Mario Kart being online is that we can play against people we know, be that personally or through forums like this.

I think this is a valid complaint. The ability to smacktalk is pretty much a standard feature with online games these days. There's already a mic on the DS so why not? They could just put an option on to turn it off if you don't like it.

But considering this Nintendo's first real effort at an online game I think we can give them a little slack provided the game plays well and such.

that might annoy me,, but i dont have many friends to begin with [and even fewer DS owning friends] so i might keep my friends list limited and just enjoy random competition.,,, that is, when i get my DS back from nintendo and set up a wifi network.,, why cant the USB thing work for mac, damnit?

What?! Okay that is just f*cking lame.

Nintendo's refusal to go online with the Cube has clearly made them inexperienced with the conventions of the feature. They better get on the ball by the time the Rev comes out because it would look pretty silly for Nintendo to have dumb little sh!t in their online games while Sony and MS have streamlined online games thanks to their extra experience. I don't think it would make or break but dumb stupid sh!t piles up and that's what really hurt the Cube. Nintendo doing one thing poorly is minor but doing like 20 things poorly isn't. So Nintendo better learn fast on what works and what doesn't with online games. Might as well do as many things well as they can to leave room for stuff they can't fix (there's always some things that goof up that you can't do anything about).

If you want Mario Kart to go from being rated E to M online go ahead and allow it. It's not so much the ability of online chat that's bad as much as it is the methane crap that people end up spewing online behind anonymity. One of the reasons I don't even play online games anymore is because of all the derogatory name calling and hatred that seems to be the norm these days. Must I bring PSO and Battle.net into this dicussion?

HILARIOUS SARCASM aside, there are some disspointments, but really I'm very grateful that Mario Kart is online at all. I know there'll be some fun MSN nights where we all go on, and when you're with all your friends like that it doesn't really matter who you play, plus we can all talk in the chatroom anyway. When it's impromptu and we're not all together like that I'd feel a little alone, but i'm still playing someone I know across the globe, and that's pretty amazing.

Mario Kart isn't like a MMORPG or a RTS for heaven's sake, the races last a minute or two each. Plus it's a portable game, not a console. How can you expect things out of the DS that PCs took years to do? The DS will have the most advanced portable online system ever, and the most advanced for its level of power too. Plus this is the first DS game, I'm sure in two years there will be much more as they work with the technology.

If you want to "talk smack" or communicate with the people you're playing with, how about... I don't know... playing people in the same room? *GASP* Like you did with every other Mario Kart game.

Also I read somewhere that they only just decided to put MKDS online before E3 this year, so it's good for being a late addition and for their first mainstream online game, i'm 100% sure future Nintendo online games will be ironed out completely.

The PSP does not have a mic..................the psp has online games that you cant talk smack in.....................So before we start beating Nintendo down with a baseball bat lets realize that they unlike Sony are trying to create a good service for us that will be simple and free. They are at least showing that they are interested in Online chatting by the talking demo at this year's E3. Let us also remember that none of these online games were built with wifi in mind they were all LAST MINUTE DECISIONS. I am completely and positively sure that if they had the wifi devs and everything ready to go at Mario Kart Ds's beginning, all the features and modes would be online. So c'mon now peeps we can find something better to do than nit pick a feature that all of us have begged for from Nintendo. This is their first online game so give it a rest and I say give it a year before we see some really neat stuff on wifi. Until that time we are gonna get half of the modes online, selective online features, and plenty of other stuff.

Personally i think the whole no voip is a good thing, basically it keeps the kids safe, you don't have them talking to people they don't know.

Same with the requirements in games like AC: WW where you can only play with people on your friends list, it makes it less likely that kids will end up playing with some pedophile.

Same with keeping the codes a secret, you don't want the codes to be public otherwise anyone can put you on their friends list.

If you want to contact a person so you can exchange info do it on the message boards via the PM service.

You must keep in mind that the WiFi the DS is using is fairly slow. Its not as quick as 802.11g or even a wired connection. It would be pretty taxing on the system to transfer the game data, which running pretty fast in mario kart, and allowing voice chat at the same time. Although, voice chat in the waiting room while people are joining your party could be done.

But, as people have said, WFC in MKDS was a last minute decision. They could have added all these features, but they would not have had the game for Xmas. Thats important considering GTA on PSP just came out...

Yeah, I'm sorry, but the potential for abuse by malicious persons with prurient interests of a less private, more chat-enabled FREE internet connection to lots of 10, 11, 12 year olds...

I fully support Nintendo in this decision.

Now I just wonder how the Rev online community will be handled and how much freedom those titles will have. I'm sure a Pokemon Online game for the REV would have plenty of privacy protections, but perhaps a game aimed at higher age users would be more open.

I agree wholeheartedly...though semi-online is better than no online, I simply think this whole thing of being able to only play with people of a similar skill level is pure BS.

Well that's only in rivals mode, regional and worldwide modes do not have that restriction, nor does friends mode.
