Hedeki Konna (Producer @ EAD) interview

Blog Interview - Game|Life

Quote

On Hideki Konno's business card, it says "Producer, Entertainment Analysis and Development." That's significant because it's the position that once appeared on the business card of Shigeru Miyamoto.

Hideki Konno is, therefore, a man to watch out for. As a producer at Nintendo's EAD -- the Kyoto studio responsible for Super Mario and Zelda -- Konno is the man responsible for games like Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS.

Quote

Konno: We have this game with a big wok that you use to cook Chinese food, and it's really interesting to have the meat and vegetables frying in there, and use the controller to flip the food around without it spilling out of the pan.

don't have time to actually read it but there is also stuff on Nintendogs & Mario Kart. Just follow the link

I'm just waiting for people to start complianing about the fact that they're making a cooking game.

Personally, I think it could be a great idea.  Maybe some sort of frentic cooking race, ala Iron Chef, or perhaps a game where you simply have to juggle a number of tasks like cooking various dishes, pulling food up to the counter for the waiters, and whatnot.  Also keep in mind that this games would be made by a Japanese studio, so I'd expect it to have some sort of slightly bizarre or surreal aspect to it as well...

Well to me it makes more sense to flip pancakes than sausages, but I do believe they are sausages...

"I'm just waiting for people to start complianing about the fact that they're making a cooking game."

Yeah, I'm too lazy to actually get in there and cook something so why should I cook virtually; where is the reward?  I only cook when I'm hungry for the purpose of eating.  If I were into cooking for fun I'd be in there frying ocra right now.  Why should I spend an hour cooking vegitables I can't eat?

I'd rather play something with a story.  Nintendo is encouraging third parties to take a big ole nasty mini game crap all over their console.

If they made the game like a virtual cookbook then it'd be REALLY awesome...Then I could have fun learning how to cook without being bored to death with ingredient measurements and text...Story?  Why couldn't there be a story?  Have you ever watched Yakitate Japan?  It's an anime about BREAD, and it's got a great story...

Obviously the game wouldn't involve just sitting there for an hour watching stuff cook, though I hate cooking, I imagine it could be quite fun "MAKE TEN BURGERS IN FIVE MINUTES" go go go!

WTF? Do you know what a mini game is? It's a game INSIDE a game, is this cooking game being packed in with something else? If so, would that be bad? NO AND NO. Negativity BE GONE!

Depending on how accurate it is?  It could be used for unmessy practice, learning how to cook, and it could be fun.  Challenges could be included, like Mario said, and why wouldn't there be a story?  I don't see why it needs one, video game stories are generally crap anyway, but if you insist.
Really, you're just being narrow minded and kinda stupid.  They're perfectly capable of experimenting and trying different games, including more experimental games like cooking and incorporating new controls into the standard, story driven games you apparently like.

I'm excited about whatever these guys come up with for the Revolution.  It's cool that they have fun little things that may not even become games, like the cooking thing.

It's not that long of an interview I recommend anyone who didn't read it take the couple minutes and do so.
