Spartan: Total Warrior = Must buy!
« on: October 31, 2005, 08:16:13 PM »
Sup people,
In case anyone cares i just bought Spartan and been playing it all day; thus i want to give my impressions to anyone who may be interested in the game.

The game is OUT OF CONTROL! Intense is wholly an insufficient discriptor for the game. Insane, epic(in its true sense), and utter/uber chaos tend to discribe my impression of the first "act" and a half (first 4 chapters).

The game is incredibily fun and addictive considering the gutwrenching pace and scope of the battles. This is so because, as the developers stated (to their credit), it is not a simple minded button masher. Dont get me wrong, you will mash all the buttons on the controller at a blistering pace. But their is a method to all the madness. The developers were correct in saying that if you run into the battles just swinging away, it will be closed curtains for you/game over. There are a variety of attacks and defensive moves that can be used and certain attacks/defenses must be used intelligently to win both boss battles and regular battles.

Graphics are very good considering how must sh!t is going down in the game. With damn near 100 soldiers battleing it out there is never any slow down. Which i found amazing. Equally amazing is that the battles with all these soldiers are at blitzkrieg paces. So many soldiers fighting at fast speeds with no slowdown is a feat well worth commendation. The only slowdown is when your character executes a special attack, which i think is on purpose to highlight the attack.

Soundtrack is excellent. Fits the game very well and keeps you pumped up for those huge, epic Gladiator/Troy like battles. You as the player will kill, behead, and maime(sp) 100 to 200 Romans per chapter. That doesnt include the soldiers killed by the NPC Spartans and Romans. The death toll is insane, which makes for an exciting experience, as demented as that may sound. Also the deceased will remain dead on the gound where slain. They dont disappear or go up in smoke, which i think is cool. Bodies are everywhere.

Anyway the game is certainly a must buy in my opinion. I dought anyone will be disappointed in the game. I dont want to go on forever so ill cut it here. If there are any questions on the game ill be glad to answer.

This is actually the first really positive review I've read about the game.  I'll admit I was really intrigued by the concept, but I heard that the execution fell flat.  Perhaps I'll have to give it another look.

Agreed. What kind of gamer are you if you can't even look passed a title? Isn't it possible that regardless of how "gaye" you think a title is, that the game could kick major ass? What if Metriod was called GirlyMan, does that somehow effect the gameplay?

Secondly, what kind of person are you?

It's official.  Never listen to Nosferat2.

Sad.  Like I said, I actually had kind of high hopes for this game.  Maybe Gun will turn out okay.

LOL  You guys are funny

with respect to the Title quote, im referring to the majority of american gamers, myself included. I would not look twice at a Japanesed titled game because i would assume it would be anime, which im not fond of. Im sure many people in the US arent either. Not saying that there not fans of the genre here i know there are.

Use your heads guys/gals. Titles are purposely changed for the US market. Looks at Resident Evil. Its Biohazard in Japan. I wonder why that is. I wonder why Metroid Prime Echoes is called Dark Echoes in Japan. Why do they change names when the games are exact for both markets. Hummm... I wonder why a totally japanese game is called Jade Empire in the US. Why isnt it SHEMUE empire(lol). These developers arent stupid. They know games will sell better with different names suited for the intended market.

I didnt say Shemue or what ever it was is a bad game, i wouldnt know, never played it. Its probably not on the GC that why i havent heard of it. Never owned a PS or Xbox. It may be a great game but ill overlook it as will others. The title means nothing. I would play the sh!t out of resident evil if it was called Biohazard or Shemue i would care less, cause it is the best game ever.

I dont know why i wasted my time explaining, im sure some will misunderstand or just dont get it.  So im done. I doudt ill revist this thread.

More food for thought.

Famicom is to japan as NES is to US. Hmmm Wonder why.

Ill stop i could keep going but its not worth it...

Is this the guy that also won't play SSB:M?

And also, Famicom was short for "Family Computer" which is very Japanese sounding. [/sarcasm]

On topic:  From what I've seen Spartan isn't bad, but it's not great.  It's supposed to be fairly fun but kind of shallow.

MetaCritic

There's the Metacritic page for it that shows that it has a 78 which is pretty good.

RE is only RE because the band Biohazard owns the rights to the name in America and Europe.  Otherwise RE would be Biohazard everywhere.

Famicom doesn't make much sense for the NES because Nintendo dropped a lot of the peripherals (such as the keyboard) so it wasn't really a computer outside of Japan.

Hi, I'm new, but HOWABOUT we talk ONTOPIC...

From what I've seen or read, STW is just another mindless, repetitive hack and slash, similar to RE4, X-men Legends, or Baldur's Gate.

These action games I hate.

Nani?

How the heck is RE4 repetitive? The only time I found this to be a problem is, naturally, when I unlocked the Chicago Typewriter and played through the game. I would go as far as to say RE4 was the best game I played this year, but it's, sadly, second to Advance Wars DS IMO.

Baldur's Gate? Mindless? Helloooooooo? Perhaps you mean Dark Alliance? Baldur's Gate was a long (100+ hours), deep D&D RPG that introduced characters like Minsc and his miniature giant space hamster Boo.

Well then, by your definition, Zelda games would also be repetitive...

Move, explore, open door, solve puzzle, use weapons to kill bad guys, get keys, open doors, beat boss.

It's not the sequence, it's what lies within...

We can break it down even further...

Play, Play, Play, Play

Man that's repetitive...

Wait, why stick to games?

Live, Live, Live, Live...

Damn what a terribly repetitive life... anyone got a gun?

Heh, well I guess this needed a response from me. and of course I have to give one, it's only natural

What's with funny sound, sound's Japanese to me I must wtf hate this game without a 2nd glance crap?

Meh sounds like you have a problem with a product that's different from the "norm", I'd gladly welcome something intresting/new/refreshing.
And anime rules, heh you need to to relook at how american's view anime, if your opinion had hold any water, then I guess shows like Adult Swim would of long been cancled "obviously not the case".

Oh Shenmue does indeed kick ass, I loved the 1st one for my beloved DC, still as good as the day it was brought.

And if a games gotta be repetitive you'll bet I'll be having repetitive fun

Not exactly.

The thing about the Zelda games is that EACH PUZZLE IS DIFFERENT. You don't do the same puzzles repeatedly, which leaves a "new" feeling, everytime you encounter the next puzzle.

In RE4, you might encounter some guys with helments or shields, but they are generally handled in the same manner. I'd rather have 8 dungeons full of unique puzzles than 5 chapters of repetitive shooting.

Puzzle games aren't repetitive, since no two will ever be the same. Action games however are. This is a fact.

My opinion however, is that I do not like repetitive games.

You do play games, but what you play is what deems it repetitive or not.

Common opinions aren't facts.

zelda is anime, all the way to Zelda 2 the character art has always been anime.
