PS3 not Backwards compatible?
« on: October 29, 2005, 04:47:08 AM »
At least not fully it seems:

gamesindustry.biz

Speaking to the IDG News Service, Sony spokesperson Reiko Sakamoto said: "It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible."

We believe multiple factors are responsible," Sakamoto told IDG, explaining that the new console has a different chipset which is not compatible with the way some software is programmed, resulting in glitches such as hangs and slow game saves.

Seems only Nintendo gets it right.

Nothing beats the uber-backwards compatibility of the Rev anyway.

I don't think any system has been 100% backwards compatible, but 47+ seems like a lot.

Woah woah woah.

WTF?  Sony is selling a new slimlined silver PS2 that can't play some PS2 games?  Is it just me, or is that effing stupid?  And people will still buy it, I bet.

So, will the PS3 have the have the same list of unplayable games as this new PS2, or will the list get bigger?

Probably won't be a huge deal I'm guessing... the PS2's backward compatibility was pretty shaky in some spots as well.

Yeah, this won't matter at all.  Sony will still advertise backward compatibility and people (who can afford it) will still gobble it up.

Backwards compatibility always has issues because especially crappy games don't follow the specs put out by the manufacturers and abuse bugs in the hardware. Since the specs are a guarantee from the manufacturer to the developer of what will work how, anything outside of the spec can and will change.

As KDR said, its only the crappy games that have this problem. To make a similiar comparison, look at the 1019 memory card for the 'Cube. There's a handful of games that don't support that card (Sonic Adventure 2 being the most famous, though it'll work as long as you don't have 999 blocks..)

Here's a list of some games that 'may not work properly' on PS2:Here

The one that people might actually care about is Final Fantasy Anthology. I don't think you'll miss the rest.

Here's an expanded list for Model number 75001 (Slimline PStwo?):Here again

Again, just a couple of major titles, and a bunch of crappy ones.

I guess it goes to show to not dump those 'legacy' systems just yet.
