Ash for the Ds Best Visuals EVAR!
« on: October 13, 2005, 07:28:04 AM »
OMG this game has completely made all other DS games look like NES ones compared to the N64.

Heres some new screens clicky here

Do realize that the series is pulling off a resident evil and is using Pre rendered backgrounds.
Quote

Previously, Sakaguchi has stated that he wanted a very realistic look for the game, and he has now detailed how, exactly, this will be accomplished. Avoiding 2D and polygons, ASH will incorporate pre-rendered CG in its battle sequences, giving the game what its producer has termed a fresh look which looks crisp and clean on the DS's small screen.

Yes, looks very nice, but I'll take art direction over "best visuals" anyday...

(That said, I'm interested in the SRPG/RPG hybrid they have going for this game)

Agreed, I am an art major in college so I definitely will take art style over best visuals.  But hey having the best of both worlds isnt that bad . . . . .  : )

Speaking of prerendered background, Wasn't there rumors floating around that Nintendo was working on some new form of cube mapping that allowed the player to view a prerendered background from multiple angles?

That would be their cube-mapping patent that would allow gamers to interact with pre-rendered backgrounds...I sincerely doubt it's being used here though...

It looks great, but did you even read the quote you pasted?  That's 100% prerendered - they're not pulling a RE (3d models on 2d backdrops), they're doing prerendered video.

From IGN:
Quote

First, the visuals. ASH doesn't use 2D and it doesn't use polygons. Instead, the game makes use of pre-rendered CG for its battle visuals. While Mistwalker had the opportunity to use 2D or low-level polygon visuals like many other DS games, Sakaguchi found that pre-rendered visuals created a fresh feeling. He states that, while the visuals would look rather bad on a large screen, they look crisp and clean on the tiny DS screen.

Given that's the case, they should change their name from Mistwalker to Mystwalker.

Cube Mapping means environment maps composed of six textures instead of one.

All prerendered worked for Golden Sun. I don't see what's new unless they do absolutely no compositing (i.e. no pasting sprites onto a background), which would be damn stupid.

Is this game going to be the Golden Sun of the DS?

Both Golden Sun games were very good, we need a third one.

All RPGs ever should be FMV-only.

I wonder how many game cards long this is going to be?
