Mario Kart DS - The Release Thread
« on: October 12, 2005, 11:36:07 PM »
With the old thread for MK alredy a couple pages down and hundreds long, it's probably time to start a fresh one. The game releases a month from Friday and it's going to be HUGE. I believe every Mario Kart game has sold over 2,000,000 copies (Double Dash is less than 100,000 away so I'll wager it passes it). Is there any reason to beleive the first online version won't do the same? This is going to be a huge Christmas for the Big N's handheld division!

Here's an article with some big online info:

http://ds.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=2740

The fact you can play any mode, character, option or course online is amazing. The only limit being 4-player is simply astounding. After the horrific lan-modes of Double Dash I'm very very glad to see Nintendo takes this seriously.

Online! Excited time.

HELL yes!

So we have...

US  - November 14
Europe - November 25
Australia - November (no exact date confirmed)
Japan - December 8

Looks like you Americans will get in some practice before the rest of the world, you're gonna need it too.

Since they remade a bunch of old tracks I'm really hoping they remade some classic battle arenas like the beach level in SMK and Block Fort in MK64!

Damn my 56k. ;_; This game's still gonna rawk though, hang from rafters and everything for a cheating special attack! But then I'm all POW WANG ZOOM and the middle sound effect is disturbing and ha ha I win the game!

I'm not sure what game, though.

From the article in the OP:
While using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, gamers will have the choice of playing against their friends, rivals (similarly skilled opponents), recent competitors, regional racers, and even worldwide players.

Does this mean we are going to get some sort of online statistics on players????  This makes me happy... very very happy.

Also, custom decals a la NFS:U2 is AWESOME as well.

The 4 player online limit is a bit of a downer but locally you can have 8 players SINGLE CART!  I think that makes up for it a fair bit.  Basically you get the Double Dash LAN mode plus 4 player online mode.

My only concern are the controls.  What are they?  Is it just d-pad and buttons or have they shoehorned some touchscreen stuff into it?

I wish there were things like previews that could tell us stuff like the controls. Oh wait

4-play isn't a huge down for a first gen online game. I'd rather full-featured than 8 player.

Yeah Ian.  I actually feel special cause I played it for about an hour at PAX.  The core game controls are just as classic as we all want them to be.  It really felt like Super Mario Kart to me.

The only thing the touch screen seemed to be used for was adjusting what your second screen did.  To be honest, I didn't play with that part much because I was having too much fun with the game itself.

Last I heard Battle Mode wasn't going to be online.  Did this change?

I don't really like the idea of 8 player Mario Kart. It kind of sucks to be in the back, unless they implement the scoring system in DoubleDash. But if that's so, then you'll have to wait for the other three players to finish (race is over once the 7th place guy finishes). I've never played 8 player LAN with DoubleDash, so if anybody could talk about how well it worked, then yeah... otherwise, it's not a big deal to miss out on 8 player online. As long as the four player online has computers to fill the end of the pack. I didn't like the way they made it limited to 4 player VS in previous MKs with no computers behind 4th.

BUT finally I'll be able to play multiplayer with actual HUMANS! When I say TAKE THAT JERK! it'll actually mean something now. Sorta...

I believe 8-player LAN on Double Dash!! was still limited to just four karts--two players per kart.

Mario Kart has never had bots, so how have you played multiplayer if it wasn't against humans?  Did you just let the other karts sit there?

1 player mode...

and DD was 8 players per kart, or up to 16 players with two per kart.

EDIT: I meant, 8 players, 1 in each single kart.

You can? I thought that you could only play a straight up race online; Grand Prix and Battle are not available. Maybe you're thinking about multi-cart multiplayer..

DS Download Play will allow for up to eight users to race via a single cartridge. While in this mode, gamers who do not have a copy of Mario Kart DS will be forced to play as ShyGuy
Well, you couldn't expect them to allow too much to be played in single cart mode.

Holy...Mother...of...God...

the only way one could really downplay that is to ask if most of those in line are there for Macs or Ipods. Either way, it is still freaking amazing. I am very happy for Apple.

I am going to probably be blasted for this, but I would actually like a simulated analog stick touch screen option much like SM64DS, otherwise I am very happy with what Mario Kart DS appears to be.
