More Revolution details soon?
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:07:29 PM »
Not sure how reliable this little tidbit is (being from the IGNCUBE mailbag) but Matt's answer to a recent question caught my eye.

Quote

News

when will more revolution news be announced?

Matt responds: Shortly after the Leipzig Games Convention. I don't have an exact time frame -- it could be a day or a week, but I don't expect it will be much longer.

FYI the Leipzig Games Convention will be held on Wednesday, August 17th.

So what do you guys/gals think?  Is some new info. being released?  Specs?  Screens?  Controller details?

Sounds probable. Nintendo will probably want to sabotage competitor's holiday sales, and to do that they will need to reveal everything before anyone has even decided what to get come Christmas time.

If they do decide to release all the info in September, here's what I imagine happening:

Parent: Billy, you want an xbox 360 for christmas, right?
Billy: Nah...I did, but now I want a Revolution, it looks super cool!
Parent: But Billy, Revolution doesn't come out until next year.
Billy: Aw, gee whiz!
Parent: I know! Lets get you a Nintendo DS with Nintendogs this year, and a Revolution next year!
Billy and Parent: HOORAY!

And I imagine the following will also happen:

Tomello: Dude, are you getting Zelda, it looks totally RAD!
Wintermelon: Nah man, I already threw my GameCube out.
Tomello: That's okay! Zelda will work with the totally happenin' REVO as well!
Wintermelon: REALLY? I'm totally getting that totally happenin' REVO I just heard about!
Tomello: Then let's go preorder Zelda RIGHT NOW!
Tomello and Wintermelon: HOORAY!

Wednesday is the business day of the GC, I might be going there on Thursday. It's a two hour trip to Leipzig but I'm not sure yet whether it's worth it.

wandering: Unlikely. Why would the kid suddently want a DS? It's either the X360 or the Rev for them.

well, a kid might not want a ds instead of a 360.... but, if a kid decides he's more interested in the rev, and the parents decide the kid is only getting one big/expensive console... then the kid could wind up getting a ds (or gameboy) this christmas to hold him over until next christmas, at which time he'd get the rev. Which would mean two sales for Nintendo instead of none.

I just discovered this was posted by Bill Aurion on the "Something important to know about the Revolution" topic so I want to appologise for reposting the info after him.

But this could be huge so I think it should still have it's own thread

Anyway, back to the discussion.  I think that the cool part about Nintendo holding the most secrets and releasing probably last is they are holding the most cards.  They have the most surprises and information to share with the public and can time these announcements whenever their hearts desire.  Now...could this have anything to do with cheering up some fans after they announced the zelda delay?  Before they had zelda to compete with the x360 but now they just have their "secrets".

And since last we heard most 3rd parties don't even have kits yet, there's plenty of time to trump the competition in any way they feel is neccesary.

I need cheering up. So I am hopeful that this "news" is something more than "you will say wow". I have faith but I feel it dwindling into the night.  I want to see the simplistic complexities of post-mordern game control and I want to say "wow". I also want Zelda to come out "before" Christmas so my holidays can be filled with the bliss of "adventure" and "excitement". A Jedi craves not these things, but I Zelda fan does.

I'm betting on a SSB3 trailer, to wet our pants, but it won't show anything solid about the Revolutions Revolution, just be a really nice teaser trailer like that one that contained most of the intro to SSBM was back at E3 2001, or whenever it was.

I'm still really doubting they show trailers by themselves...Just recently Miyamoto was talking about wanting to show the games and the interface as a package, so it really depends on when Ninty wants to finally pull the cover off the interface...

I think they will probably show off the console's power, like amazing graphics or stuff like the duckies demo by sony, some big bluff so the common customer will say wow.

"I'm betting on a SSB3 trailer, to wet our pants, but it won't show anything solid about the Revolutions Revolution"

Bah, that's not a real showing.  They don't have time to dick around anymore.  The X360 launch is probably about three months away.  They have to show us the real deal soon if they expect anyone to care.  Plus as Bill mentioned the "interface" of the console is the whole point.  If they really have something special they can't just show screens.  And if they don't have anything special then they're a bunch of complete dolts for waiting so long and deceiving their fans.

I'd rather they show nothing then some half-assed showing.  After E3's carrot dangling I'm not going to put up with more bullsh!t.

Would you prefer monkey defacation instead?

On a serious note: I agree.  Nintendo does need a show all event. But they have to do something to appease the fans for now. A date on exactly when they'll let the cat out of the bag would be nice. . .

An exact date (months/days/minutes/seconds) for the FULL BLOW REVOLUTION UNVEILING and even a countdown at their website would be an absolutely huge way to hype it up, and i'd enjoy every second of it.

Like the E3 one? That would be nice. I could just imagine it; exactly when the clock strikes zero around the world with free streaming on the website, Iwata pulls the cloth out and unveils the controller with the Revolution. Not like at E3 when they were 15 minutes late lol. But you have to ask; what could live up to that amount of hype?

Yeah, sorta. A live stream is a must as well! Or maybe they can have a URL to a movie magically appear when the timer reaches 0, or a whole new website opening, the Nintendo Revolution website.

Nothing can match the hype now.  Nothing feasible at this point in history anyway.

Nintendo will be fine though provided they have something cool for the controller that doesn't just seem like a gimmick and shows some games that really get people excited.  They could should the Cube controller with an extra button and everyone would be disappointed and then they could completely win everyone back with the most impressive launch lineup seen in years.  The games are the most important part.

I think the most important thing is that the Rev immediately looks like it can compete with the competition.  The "Nintendo is going to lose" stigma is what needs to be overcome so that people have hope in the Rev.  That THIS time Nintendo's going to end up better than they did before instead of worse.

From the IGN mailbag today:

In your last mailbox you mentioned that there would be more information about the revolution shortly after Leipzig. How educated of a guess is this?

Matt responds: I wouldn't call it a guess.

Curious.  Veeeery curious.

The Leipzig conference is over, yes, but Matt said there wouldn't be anything Revolutionary there, just "a day to a week" after.
