I've been thinking a lot (a few minutes) about how Nintendo should unveil the Rev. Not like "They should do it at Spaceworld!!!!" but what they should show when the day comes. According to Miyamoto, the Rev's concept is pretty easy to copy. While Nintendo shouldn't wait until the other consoles have launched, they don't want to unveil too early because the competition may steal the idea. The competition may not even care- they may dismiss it as stupid and useless and not realize its true potential until it's too late.
So that got me to thinking, well what if they DO care? Well then in that case Nintendo should have some kickass software to go along with it, both first and third party. But there's no way of knowing how Sony or Microsoft or anyone's going to react. What if they didn't care UNTIL Nintendo showed the awesome new Metroid game? Potentially, showing awesome games could get the competition interested, and they could begin to forumlate how to include it into their own systems. On the other hand, showing crappy games could protect being copied, but it would also turn off most people. Of course later on they'd show Metroid and wow everyone, but how much damage would've already been inflicted? Which is worse, turning off some people initially, or being the "last place" console with no more secret weapons?
Furthermore, if the unveiling turns out to be decidedly sub-par (with plans on showing Metroid in the future) they have to get the timing just right so that they don't completely lose everybody. They have to time the initital unveiling with enough time to show Metroid without losing too many costumers. Since the X360 and PS3 will be pretty expensive, most gamers will not be able to afford two consoles until it's (again) too late. Timing is important, but particularly hard, what with the X360 and the PS3 launching fairly far apart (it's not that far, but far enough to make timing tricky).
BUT, will people buying X360s and PS3s really care about the Rev anyway? The crowd Nintendo's going for is very different than the crowd that Sony and Microsoft is going for (with some overlap, of course). Does any of this timing crap even matter? It's not going to make much of a difference with non-gamers, is it? This is an advantage that the Rev has. Obviously Nintendo has to pay attention to their competition, but their core audience is likely to just not care about those other two companies, so building their plans around Sony and Microsoft just isn't as important.
Yeah, so I don't know what to think. I just typed that up, I'm not even going to re-read it to see if it makes sense, other people will do that. Really, that whole thing was from someone else's point of view, personally I don't care much since I don't really care about the competition anyway. I mostly care about Twilight Princess right now, it will be the best game ever.
