XBox360 Backwards compatibility...
« on: May 12, 2005, 05:32:27 PM »
Apparently they are "not allowed to talk about this until E3" and they mentioned that so I expect that means they have a surprise up their sleeve.  That's the best thing I heard after the mtv-debut commercial today.

The first thing that comes to mind is that they will have backwards compatibility with something MORE than just the original XBox.  Dreamcast, perhaps?  Certainly not Nintendo and Sega is the only console manufacturer of recent history that's out of the game now.  Perhaps they'll have Jaguar games too.

Any other ideas on what this could be?

Lastly, I think the system looks pretty good.  Smart move with the industrial designers.  It looks clean, finished and modern.

If they really have "backwards compatibilty ++" I'm willing to bet that it'll be a Bleem! scenerio where playing your Xbox games on the 360 will improve the resolution or add and an extra polygon or something.  This would actually be a pretty smart move since it might muster up some sales from people on the fence.   If we could go from PS1 to DC, then going from Xbox to 360 can't be too hard since it's like going from PC to PC.

Why!?  Backwards-Compatibility should be EXPECTED considering Sony and Ninty are doing it...Never Happening!

Intel/Nvidia to PPC/ATI != PC to PC

Backwards compatability is likely something they "won't talk about" period

Bill: Sony's doing backward-compatibility?! Really?! Where did you get this info? Here I was all happy that Nintendo might have been the only one with backward compatibility...oh well.

About xbox360 back-compatibility, I agree with KN that most likely microsoft will show something of the "Bleem" type however does that not be enough for nvidia to still stop xbox360 from playing xbox games? After all it would be emulation and as so it is illegal, or is it illegal to a certain extent?!

Someone at another forum linked to a movie that was played on MTV for the 360's "unveiling," and they said that like 3 minutes in, it shows the 360's dashboard and Fable is listed.

That would be a good indicator of backward compatability, but of course we'll know for sure in a few days...

If anything there may be re-releases of popular games, ported for the Xbox360

Or maybe the ability to download a version of the game that had been ported to the 360

DC emulating the original playstation is one thing, 360 emulating the Xbox is not practical

Nvidia, the graphics chipmaker, said on Thursday it was ending shipments of chips for Microsoft's Xbox game console in the current quarter as what was once one of its biggest customers moved on to its next-generation machine.

Microsoft is expected to release the Xbox 360 in November, featuring a graphics chip from rival ATI. Microsoft had informed Nvidia it would not take any more product after Nvidia's second quarter, ending August 1.

The news was a clear indication that Microsoft was cutting off production of the old Xbox and of the imminent release of its successor.

No way is MS getting chips to put in 360 especially not with NV working w/ Sony now.
Their only bet is to work out an emulation deal, or "accidentally" leave a loop hole that allows X360 to somehow emulate Xbox1 w/ a clause of deniablilty <does that make sense?>

even if they could, it's an expensive chip to just throw into the 360....

I mean it's an entire nvidia GPU were talking about here...

they should be able to emulate the PS1 by now, so why wouldn't there be PS1 BC?

Ok another pet peeve is the Xbox 360 and "backwards compatibility".  If it were so easy, MS would have touted it from the start - major selling feature, something you would not forget to mention.  It's not though because of the move to Ati/IBM, but after everyone was quick to go "oh.... it may not be??..." after the MTV event, they were quick to respond with... oh wait it is..... kind of, for select games.

Then the, "See, emulation!" started to arise.  However you don't emulate with any efficiency in this environment....
Rather, I can almost 100% guarantee this is the way it's going to work.

Certain games of choice (::cough:: halo for one) will be ported to the 360 - basically anything that is platform dependant... what's not platform dependant you say?  Your textures, maps, etc...  That information will be obtained from the original xbox game disc.  So you download this "port/re-release" to your 360 most likely via your Xbox Siver (or if they want to get cute, paying Xbox Gold) account.  In order to play the game you still need to insert your original xbox game disc.  This method would allow them to provide the downloaded content  _free_ since you need the original game disc, thus proving you own the original title.

Nice thinking, Shecky.  That would still be inferior to true backwards-compatibility, but it's not terrible.

Deadly: No, the GBA could take those games and run them natively, the X360 will at least need recompiled binaries i.e. additional data outside of the DVD.

Some rumors even have it that MS is going to sell the games "reissued" for the X360 (i.e. with X360 binaries instead of XB) at budget price. I wonder which way they are going to pick? (probably premium Live downloads...)

EDIT: Oh and let's not forget the legal desaster that would be recompiling third party titles. This will be at least as limited as the Revolution's old game support.

KDR hit the 2 likely options on the nose... either a reissue of a game, or a Live download (like I outlined in my last post)

and you *know* Halo will be on the list of titles they do

Note to Microsoft: It's not backwards compatibility if I have to rebuy the game.  That's like saying the GBA was "partially backwards compatible" with the SNES.

Answer from Microsoft: No, it's not traditional backwards compatibility. But it IS our NEW and IMPROVED backwards compatibility that 14 independant researchers agree will provide 114% more enjoyment. You will be able to play your favourite XBox games on the XBox 360 with NEW and ENHANCED features! Play the critically acclaimed Halo 2 online on the NEW XBox 360 Live! Gold service, earning badges and reputation to set you apart from other players.

IOW, they'll probably throw in a few new Live! features and justify calling that a new game. Just like they did with their operating systems for quite some time now.
