Devloping For Revolution
« on: March 30, 2005, 04:12:21 AM »
It seems as though Devloping for the Revolution will be quite a breeze. Here are the facts.

Due to its market window it will probably be more powerful than Microsofts next system.

It will have a similar architecture to Gamcube, and will use the same API. So, porting code from Gamecube to revolution could be copy and paste.

It has a similar architecture to Xenon perhaps, and porting from there might be pretty easy. Especially if your a company using some sort of middleware.

Gamecube actually had the best texture pipeline of any system. Though it seemed to be overshadowed by Xbox's use of shaders. Revolution should have all of the shader effects and more.

PS3 might be a pain to develope for, perhaps Games will take to long to make for ps3 or seem rushed.

Technology has progressed significantly since Gamecube, while the gamecube was 485 mhz....Revolution could be anywhere from 3 to 5ghz

graphic technology has progressed alot as well http://www.ati.com/products/radeonx850/index.html
take a look at those demos.....

i think for gamecube future that they will make a slimmer more compatiable gamecube for easy carrying and more ghz or more memory. i think gamecube has pretty good graphics but it could need improvement. i like the gamecube the best because ps2 break to easily and xbox slacks on games. i dont know about the nintndo ds but it seems it has good quality. and as for the psp goes it sucks my crap. because deffently lacking on games and easy to loose and probably easy to break. to much money and not good enough quality.

Also, the Revolution could be cheaper to develop for compared to the others.

how you would think installing all this new stuff would cost more but they are gonna make more. if you go to yahoo.com and put in images of gamecube it will show a gamecube that plays dvds. and one that plays viedo tapes. there like future gamecubes.

The API news is great for developers.  This and the backwards compatibility should have them running back to their Cube dev kits.

This is really good news.  What it means for developers is that they dont have to learn the ins and outs of an entirely new system (i.e. PS3 XBOX2).  In terms of the consumer we should expect a higher level of quality from 1st generation games on Revolution to that of the PS3 and XBOX2.

Also higher quality ports!

What about the quickness of developing a Rev game? Since they don't have to learn too much, doesn't it mean that they could develope games faster? Not only that, but with their experience, they should be getting good at taking shortcuts, yet still producing high quality games.

Overall, does this mean quicker games compared to the Xenon and PS3?

Well that's the idea behind API isn't it?  It not only cuts development costs but also saves a lot of time...

In theory the idea of using the same APIs sounds pretty cool but then I thought of something.  What if third parties like Activision, Ubisoft, & EA that put their games on every console imaginable simply port the Cube version to the Rev because it would be easier than porting the superior PS3 or Xenon version?  Now realistically I don't think that would be longterm but I think it's a possibility for the launch period.  We're well aware of third parties half-assing Cube ports and then getting mad when they sell poorly.  Having another "crappy third party port" situation early on the Rev's life would be pretty bad.  Hopefully it won't happen since that's not Nintendo's plan and using the same API is in theory a good idea.

Ian, the rev will be backwards-compatible. Why the hell would game companies botehr porting a game to a console from a version you can already play on that console?

"Why the hell would game companies botehr porting a game to a console from a version you can already play on that console?"

Because they're lazy and would assume that few would notice.  When I say "port from the Cube" I mean they still update stuff like textures and sound and such it's just that they don't put nearly as much effort into it or use as many extra graphic effects and such.  I also mean Cube related restrictions such as say less characters on screen at once or a lower framerate carrying over as well.
