Probably fake pic of a Rev development kit
« on: February 23, 2005, 03:19:54 PM »
This is proportedly a picture of a Revolution development kit, snagged with a hidden camera.

Someone brightened it up to reveal more details.

I think we all know that this could very easily be bogus, but it could probably just as easily be real. As if we'd know. Or it matters. But, I figured some of you would enjoy it.

It's a box and it has ports...

But is that supposed to be the Boot-up screen?  It's BORING so it's fake...Oh well, it's better than the drought we've been having at the moment, so I'll TAKE IT...

And doesn't the (R) mark mean the name should be trademarked?  Ninty has never kept a codename ever, and I doubt they will keep Revolution...

It indicates a "hard drive". And that it's "OK".

Of course, that might just be the storage medium for the dev kit.

And there's a Pepsi on the left side of the TV, which sort of gives you a frame of reference to guess that this thing is freakishly small. Or it's a Reggie-sized Pepsi. Does Reggie eat Pepsi?

Everything link except for "logo" grossed my out........was there a reason they drew a toilet and named it Nintendo:Revolution?

I like the Logo though, more so the actually logo and not the Nintendo:Revolution. It's clean and simple, but it could still use work. In other words it's not yet cool enough. Even though creative I think GC's logo was terrible. Sure it's a cube, and the logo reminded me that but I need curves and such in a logo, or a non-symetrical design. Either of those just don't fit the cube though.

The guy that posted the image had this to say on Nintendo's forums:

"I'm the one that posted that pic of the Revolution that everyone is fighting over right now. Well I wrote down some of the things you people were saying and I went and asked my source (we'll call him Mario lol) about it.

1. The start up screen looks like crap

Mario's Response: That was a prototype/development system. Which means it's still being worked on. Which means there are a lot of things that will change including that start up screen. Gamecube, N64, and all other Nintendo systems go through similiar processes.

2. It's so huge!

Mario's Response: It's smaller than the Gamecube in that picture! That's a 17 inch display in the background. It's just a close up shot.

3. Nintendo wouldn't let you take a picture of that!

Mario's Response: Obviously. They didn't let me. I took it without permission. Although it doesn't really matter because it doesn't divulge any information anyway.

4. That logo is ugly/ that start up screen is stupid/ Nintendo wouldn't use that start up screen/ why is there info about ram and harddrive and core voltage/why is it being displayed on a computer monitor?

Mario's Response: Two words: development system. You people have no clue how a system is developed. It's not like we manufacture parts and then put it together. We piece things together, sometimes from left over parts. We use breadboards sometimes. A majority of the initial work is done on computers. Once the system is actually blue printed we make mock up systems which work nothing like the final production models. For example the Gamecube development system used cartridges! Programs were dumped from computers onto carts so that we didn't have to burn CD's or DVD's constantly.  So what that all means is this system is radically different than the production model or even the preproduction model.

Things like RAM and core voltage are displayed because that's vital information to know. A lot of things go wrong during testing. CPU temperatures sky rocket. Harddrives crash. RAM fails. That's why it's displayed on screen, it's vital info. It actually stays on screen the whole time, not just start up. The logo is just a splash screen some tech made. Most likely that won't even be the name of the final system.

It's on a computer monitor because all systems are tested this way. Like I said we don't manufacture parts then assemble a mock up. We use existing hardware. So we use a type of video card. Plus the system is connected to a workstation throughout most of the testing.

5. It's running hot/boiling

Mario's Response: It sure is. We were having heat issues. That temperature is still within normal parameters. The case was also partially disassembled. The case aids in air flow. Without it air can't circulate like it should.

6. What's with all the Pepsi?

Mario's Response: We like Pepsi. Actually Nintendo and Pepsi will be doing some promotions in Japan and also some more this summer in the US. The US promotion was going to run this month in the US but Pepsi had a prior deal with Apple and iTunes, so Nintendo decided to postpone it until summer. Pepsi sent all Nintendo offices cases of free soda.

So there you go everyone."

I dunno, sounds pretty convincing. Doesn't matter whether this is real or not anyway, since the pic doesn't show us anything important.

Its there because he drew it with photoshop.  =P  IMHO they would have to work to make the start up screen look that bad.  If it was a prelim device like he is saying, wouldn't it make more sense if nintendo just used a text boot for the time being rather than creating an ass ugly boot up?

RAM, Hard Drive: OK?

What a bunch of crap. RAM startup tests always tell you how much RAM you have. And why would you need to know if the HD is OK? What, is this thing going through a battery of physical damage tests?

Fake or not, the dev kit is the most convincing picture I've seen so far.  Bill did a nice job of picking up on the (R) symbol on the screen, but an anti-skeptic could argue that the boot screen was just slapped together by some programmer who wanted to let out his artistic side for an hour one afternoon and Nintendo left it in, warts and all.

Actually, the logo and others that DustinRiley posted aren't half-bad either, but I'm guessing they're fake.
That's my opinion, not yours.

That second logo looks like the Halo logo...

The Pepsi idea is a nice one. I mean, we know Ninty is doing something with Pepsi (see "Blue" DS) so making up a story based on that is nice.

But why the hell is 46 C "hot"? That's normal operation temperature for an idle CPU. Well, at least AMD made CPUs but I doubt IBM would make something much cooler for Nintendo when it's probably derived from the PPC970 which is known for its high operation temperatures.

What bothers me about the stats is how it lists the CPU temperature and core voltage but not the GPU stats.

Bill: Well, yeah, but what the heck is that?
Pale: Without a text engine you can't make a text bootup, an image is much easier. Besides, it's closer to the final specs and coders like to test stuff before art has delivered matching assets. That's why we often see placeholders.

Too bad its fake.  I kinda like that design for the system.  A few minor problems with it would be that it would be harder to store and stack with your entertainment system.  Sliding Disk Trays are the best for stacking devices.

the logo looks pretty legit, in the fact that it looks too crappy to be a fake (people who make these usually embellish), and it looks okay enough for a temporary picture for a dev kit. What do u think the load up of the DS looked like? I'm pretty sure they didn't have the final logo, name, or design for it.

I'd like to point out that I said that the picture of the development kit looks legit to me, NOT the fan-concept renders.  And the pic that "proves" the dev kit is a fake does no such thing .. it's understood that when building prototypes, you'll use just about anything you've got laying around the office.  In this case, it was probably VERY easy for them to wire up the buttons on the Mad Catz device, and use the lid as a way to keep the laser from bouncing outside of the case, which is a very dangerous thing.

So I'll reiterate ... looks legit to me.

Wouldn't it be funny if this place had accurate pictures of Revolution's dev kit.  The only reason I bring it up is the first version of this website was made famous for accurately guessing
Gamecube's codename in development.  It kinda feels like deja-vu.  I wonder if Justin Nation is smiling somehwere.
Somehow my last user name was banned even though I haven't used this site since 2003.
