N64 -> DS
« on: January 26, 2005, 08:43:14 AM »
Are there any games that were from the N64 that you would like to see ported to the DS? Three of my favs were Duke Nukem:Zero Hour, Super Smash Bros.,  and Yoshi's Story. I would also like to see Jet Force Gemini, solely because I never got to play the first time around.

What would you like to see? I ask because it seems we may be seeing more due to the DS's abilities

As a matter of fact...

Perfect Dark. Fully WLAN/online compatible in all modes (co-op, counter-op, 16 person multiplayer, 32 if they can manage it). New maps and stuff of course...

None.  In theory re-releases are fine but Nintendo and various third parties showed with the GBA that they'll only abuse it for a cheap buck.  For every port of an obscure game that fans desire to see re-released there are like ten ports of games that have no real need to be re-released beyond some quick money.  Nintendo is one of the worst offenders as they re-released all sorts of widely available SNES games while requested games like Super Metroid remained unported, made all sorts of unwanted changes to the re-releases (out of place voices, lower difficulty), and ported sheer junk like the NES version of Donkey Kong that was A. already re-released TWICE this generation with Animal Crossing and the e-Reader and B. is an inferior NES port that's missing a level instead of the original arcade game.  Plus they released these all at a normal price.  Had they made compilations instead or released them for like $10-20 (NES Classics should be cheaper than Super Mario Advance obviously) then it would be more acceptable.

I'm sick of ports.  If you missed out the first time tough sh!t.  It's not like the really obscure games get ported anyway.  If you can't find a used copy of Super Mario Bros 3 you probably can't open a door.  If Nintendo shows improvement and starts making compilations or lowers the price on barebones ports then I'll support it but since they launched the DS with a port of the most widely available N64 game in existence (and in place of a new game as well) obviously they haven't changed.

I am however in favour of full-on remakes like Metroid: Zero Mission.  If they completely rehauled the graphics in a Perfect Dark remake like GameFreak suggested I would be all for it but in order to do it it would probably be better to release it on a console instead of a portable.  Otherwise the graphics won't make that big of a jump.

It would be dumb imo to re release smash bros. 64 on the DS.  If you go back and play it you will notice how wildly different it plays than melee.  They would need to make a new one in order for it to flow better with the melee controls and speed.

Super Smash Brothers is too delicate a game to play with a handheld.  You could do it, I suppose, but I like mastery over controls with games like that.

Personally, I really don't want to see any more ports than I have to.  I want new and original games, just like I always have.

Conker's Bad Fur Day! That game was sweet. I wonder if it would be just as good if it didn't was so "evil". Like the cancelled Conker 64: Twelve Tales (or something like that).
And of course the Banjo Kazooie games!
O and don't forget Donkey Kong 64.
And umm... Well there's only one RPG on the N64 that I know of which is Quest 64. It gets bad rates everywhere but I think it's OK and there isn't really any RPG out yet so... that would be cool too.
And Zelda OoT of course! Zelda MM isn't really handheld material.
Ummm... well that's about it.
If they would port all these games I would definatly buy them all!
If I would have to choose one of them I would go for... Zelda OoT.

Sin & Punishment - Successors to the Earth

I feel it would make a great DS game... if Nintendo could have any more hope in it after it's abysmal sales. :/

Hate to tell you DemonFox, but Conker and Banjo-Kazooie may never see the DS. Considering MS owns nintendo's portion of Rare.

I don't really want to see too many ports (and ports include "spiced up"  ports for the DS, ala SM64DS), but I really would love to see Perfect Dark.  I've only played the co-op mode for about an hour, and now my N64 contollers are dead and I can't find new ones, so buying now would be silly .  Just include controls like in Hunters, add LAN and online (although I know I'd never use it..), some more maps, and fix up the framerate.  I don't need a a graphical rehaul, as long it runs smoothly, which the DS can do.

Re-releases can be good. Conker was released too late and not many got to enjoy this wonderful game and Rare is making it better than ever and re-releasing it. Ok so it's not a port as much as a full remake with full online multiplayer and amazing graphics but whatever.
I'd still kill for an online 16 player Perfect Dark... talk about killer app. And the co op and counter op in Perfect Dark blew away Halo's and timesplitters.

Rare still releases games for GBA.  Microsoft is not competing with Nintendo's handhelds so a Rare game on DS, even a port, is not out of the question.

There are only two games I would like to see come from the 64 to the DS.

Conkers Bad Fur day has already been mentioned, and I would maim a [insert name of religion here] person to get my hands on Starfox64 DS.

Wifi multiplayer Starfox...I get giddy and excited just thinking about that.

Perfect Dark and Star Fox are great choices... Id say the Mario Tennis for four way wireless action, and of course one of those WWE Wrestling games from THQ... but it might be a problem with Aki gone

When you're porting at least port something that would actually benefit from the DS features. Like Noiz2.

I could care less about the DS's features, other than online play. I just want to have a good game to play anywhere, and online if there's multiplayer.
Of course, sequels to N64 games (like Mario Kart DS) instead of ports of N64 games (like Mario 64) are always the best route. But some games like Perfect Dark, there's no more hope for a direct sequel on DS so a port is the best.
And if Treasure didn't have like 10 employees they could get an Ikaruga on the DS. That would really be a killer app, especially with the two vertically stacked screens and co-op (with online!) play. The only two games I play on my calculator is Tetris (also would be awesome on DS with the two screens) and Phoenix, which is just a really really simple space shooter like Ikaruga.

Naah, I think they'd have to redo way too much to port Ikaruga (and remember, both screens cannot use 3d at the same time, even with alternating you'd update them asyncronously). Something more simple might work, though. Although I'd definitely prefer a new game over some port.

nope, both screens can use 3D at the same time...This silly rumors get way outta hand.. There's already a game out that has both screens running full 3D at once...it was a launch title lol... Anyway why would Nintendo say stuff like "see a character two screens tall" and stuff? I'm sure they weren't talking abou FMV like in Hunters.
Anyway yeah both screens can definately do 3D at once, and you can do it in 30 fps too, unlike where if only on one screen the DS forces 60 fps... About the alternating thing, I wouldn't take rookie's word for it.. like I said a launch title had full 3D in both screens and it looked perfect to me

I don't see that much to redo for Ikaruga... tone down the graphics a little, lower texture sizes, and tone down the explosions. The should handle the rest of the effects.... And Ikaruga doesn't really push the polys too much... If Soul Calibur can be ported with Namco saying it has surpassed the original in graphics quality, I highly doubt Ikaruga can't be done... However Treasure did only have 5 people working on that game I think... I doubt they have a port team
