Yes, Kirby is original, but it has the famous Kirby name. Kirby is huge in Japan.

Who's ever heard of Another Code? ElectroPlankton?

It was the new colours and Kirby that boosted DS sales. Note how the game is still selling well (fairly).

Another Code sold ok.  You can't get Pokemon numbers with every single game.

Who cares about electroplankton?  I thought this was a sales thread where we discussed the sales of the ds systems and the games.  Or is that only the ds games that do well?

And I understand that the game didn't orignally cost that much to make.  But Nintendo put alot of advertising behind this game.  They had that special EP ds giveaway and media day to play with the game.  Clearly they wouldn't have done this for a game they thought wouldn't have any effect on thier sales.

The DS really needs to elimiante PSP before it starts to get hectic

American hardware numbers, from the Gaming-Age forums.

The PSP apparently sold 620,000 units in March. It launched on the 24th, so that's an 8-day total. It sold 1.1 million games, so that's an attach rate of 1.77.

They don't say how much the DS sold in March, but they say that it sold 428,000 so far this year, which is useful, because DS numbers have been mysteriously absent lately. This means that combined with the 2004 total, the DS is now at 1,653,594 in America (which seems kinda low, I thought people were saying it had broken 2 mil in America a while back).

PS2: 495,000
Xbox: 227,000
GCN: 94,000

No GBA numbers mentioned.

I for one care, as well as the rest of us in the North American gaming community who acknowledge gaming as an art form; this is a brilliant concept and the fact that the japanese aren't buying into it really worries me that I wont see those loveable Plankton stateside.

unless of course you mean that the 4-figure budget would limit the marketing , thus yielding weaker initial sales, in which case i credit your genius

I really dont understand why there are such low numbers for the DS, I also thought it had surpassed the 2 million units.

Well it's a rather crappy forum, and I honestly don't trust the moderation there, but I don't immediately suspect their users of making up false data (although that's always a concern with "leaked" info). I just don't know of any other places to find NPD numbers.

The numbers sonycowboy posted (and yeah, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, despite having a Sony-themed username) say...

Quote

2004 Nov - 479,695
2004 Dec - 745,899

2005 Jan - 152,091
2005 Feb - ???
2005 Mar - ???

2004 Total - 1,225,594
2005 so-far - 428,000

I found some useful numbers from a Nintendo press release here

It says that the DS (which launched on Nov 21) sold-through more than 500,000 units, and had more than a 90% sellout rate (IIRC it had 550,000 shipped) in it's first week alone.

That doesn't match the leaked NPD number, which says less than 500,000, in more than one week.

They also say it broke 1,000,000 sold-through by the time of the press release, Dec 21. That roughly fits the NPD leak.

Also (and here's a neat bit), they say the shipments to USA and Japan would be 2.8 million by the end of 2004. According to the Media Create numbers, the DS sold a hair under 1.5 million by the end of the year in Japan. That would leave only 1.3 million possible for America.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the previous NPD leaks might be a little low, but are probably about right.

428,000 since December seems pretty good, considering that it's the slowest time of the year, but it just seems odd that the number stream dried up, around the DS specifically, and the phrase "almost two million" started getting tossed around in it's place.

My only guess is that maybe the DS got to it's current "almost two million" level back in early February, making the rumors basically true, and then the DS sold almost nothing in March in the face of the one-two punch of a slow time in the industry, and Sony's ground shaking launch hype. Nintendo really didn't put anything out there to try and "fight" the PSP launch, so it wouldn't be a surprise.

If that's how it played out, and the DS was on it's heels more than we realized, now would be a very good time for the DS to deliver a big game (as if there's ever a bad time for one of those). Or some big news. E3 can't come fast enough.

Why??

Because NDP can't hang out in every store in America, spying on people and physically counting every hardware/software piece that gets sold every month. They make deals with stores to get a look at their computer records.

Walmart and a couple other stores refuse to play along with NPD, or maybe they just ask for unreasonable amounts of money.

NPD supposedly accounts for that though. They extrapolate what they can't confirm.

Most good political polls only contact a few thousand people and then they extrapolate a few million. And they do a pretty good job of it. If NPD "only" has something like 75% of the industry's sales known to them as undeniable fact, you'd think their estimates would be pretty reliable.

They can be fairly certain by doing that, but still, it is by no means an exact science. Would you happen to know the percent error involved, because it may not seem like it, but just a bit of difference between actual and estimated data could make a lot of difference

I just hope they don't assume that because it's selling well in the NPD-compliant stores, that it is selling well in the ones that aren't.  All three of the Walmarts closest to me have sold exactly one PSP combined. I don't know if Kmart counts on the NPD, but the two closest to me do not even stock the PSP, or they keep them locked in an inivisible case, because I can't seem to find where they are kept. (although they do stock the games).  I'm willing to bet the PSP numbers are significantly lower than what is reported.

That's too bad... the TRU 90 percent off clearance would have caused more than a few amusing blips their february numbers since a ton of Dreamcast and N64 games got blown out for pocket change.

On a side note Sprung's numbers don't do it justice at all. It's not the best game ever but it's easily better than almost half the DS games out to date.
