Well the race has changed, the DS will be going "online" not to mention it'll be free and the flagship game will be animal crossing!!!

And the nails are being pounded into the PSP's coffin as we speak.

Animal Crossing and Mario Kart are going to triple the system's sales in like a month. Mario Kart sells better than almost anything, and when you combine that with worldwide play...oh dear. And Animal Crossing is the most on-line friendly title ever. Today has got me insanely excited, the promise is beginning to come true.

According to IGN Mario Kart was demoed with 8 players but was not mentioned as being online.  I hope it is since it seems like such a waste to release it offline when online games will be available this year.  In that case if reviewers wanted to knock off points for no online I'd support it since the feature is right there ready to be used and unlike with the Cube Nintendo is using it.  There's no excuse for Nintendo to release their first online DS games in the same year as Mario Kart and have Mario Kart be offline.

But anyway the PSP doesn't have an online advantage anymore and Animal Crossing online is a very big deal.  That's a game that non-gamers and gamers really do both enjoy.  Mario Kart would really help though.

Mario Kart will be online. It would make no sense to release it within a month or two of online and not have it be online. Along with Animal Crossing it's the best suited Nintendo title.

Maybe Nintendo will take a cue from Sony and release regular Mario Kart DS and then release an online version a few months later and make people buy it again.

Mario Kart looked pretty much finished at GDC, but for some reason (online maybe?) Reggie stated that it's looking at a Q4 release. It ran smooth (most likely 60fps), had many charachters available with the individual kinks worked out, and it finished the layout and map presention. If you saw the video you would agree that it would release in a 1-3 month time for quality's sake, but now, it's releasing after 7-9 months? What could those extra months be used for? Online, mark my words.

I think Animal Crossing will be the DS's FF7.
The Animal Crossing games on the N64 and GCN were HUGE hits in Japan but on the DS with its portability, touch-screen, and online features it will be a phenomenon. Animal Crossing and the DS go together so well it almost seems as if the system was built for this one game.
Then there's also POKEMON and SQUARE-ENIX games on the horizon.
So talk of the DS being doomed is just silly.

Nintendo DS achieves the biggest launch week for any UK console (either CD or Handheld) with a projected UK sales of 87,000 units. Nintendo's UK GBA launch week (week 25, 2001) was an estimated 67,000, while GBA SP managed 47,000 (week 13, 2003). However, before today Nintendo's Gamecube was the fastest selling console over a launch week with 69,000 units (week 18, 2002) thanks to an extremely low launch price for a static console (around £127). DS launched on Friday with 16 titles available compared to 13 for the launch of the original GBA.

Whoa! and look at all the DS games in the chart,

18-POKEMON DASH
19-SPIDER-MAN 2
25-ROBOTS
29-PROJECT RUB
39-ZOO KEEPER
40-POLARIUM

What an awesome launch!

Similar launch happened in Australia, with Super Mario 64 DS and Wario Ware Touched! debuting at number one and two on the all formats chart and the console breaking sales records.

Amazing, Nintendo have won the two markets that hate them the most... DS is unstoppable.

Alright, this is getting a little nuts. Both PSP AND PS2 are outselling DS. Needless to mention PSP has been outselling DS for quite some time now.

They might as well rename the game division of Japan "Sony Land".

I sware, if Nintendo could just release a few screens, a few screens, of PKMN Diamond & Pearl, it would give a nice boost in sales.

Sony dominating the handheld market as well scares me. And the fact that they made that "most beautiful thing in the world" speach makes me a little pissed too.

The Media Create weekly Japanese sales figures are out again.

The PSP beat the DS by 20,000 units again. This is becoming a trend. At this rate the PSP will beat the DS in Japan in about two years.

1: PSP 43,644
2: PS2 40,270
3: NDS 22,446
4: GBASP 11,013
5: GCN 3,357
6: GBA 477
7: Xbox 345

I decided to go through their top-50 games and pick out (and attempt to poorly translate) the DS and PSP games.

Only the top ten games has sales figures listed. All games are 5,040 yen (about $47 USD), unless otherwise mentioned.

07: NDS Harvest Moon - 28,312 units
09: PSP Sarugeshichu P! - 20,395 units
10: PSP Tales of Eternia - 19,736 units
11: NDS Pac-Pix
22: NDS Meteos
23: PSP Everybody's Golf
25: PSP Ridge Racers
26: PSP Namco Museum - 3,990 yen
27: PSP Dynasty Warriors - 5,544 yen
29: NDS Another Code - 4,800 yen
32: NDS Sawaru Made in Wario - 4,800 yen
33: NDS Catch! Touch! Yoshi! - 4,800 yen
35: NDS Super Mario 64DS - 4,800 yen
41: PSP Peoples Academy ???
43: PSP Need For Speed Underground
44: PSP Popolocrois

Edit: Fixed some names.
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

It seems pretty even there... both systems now need ONE really good game to get a boost over the other, I wonder if Nintendogs will be able to lift DS hardware sales once again? Jump Superstars will give the DS a big boost, but that isn't out for ages.

edit: OH! Forgot about Kirby, that just came out the other day, can't wait to see how well it did in next weeks chart.

So does the DS still have an overall lead on the PSP?

What are the official Japanese numbers, and when will the US charts for March come out?

Can't wait to find out who won.

Yes the DS has the overall lead both here in the US and Japan.  In Japan the DS has about a 1 million system lead, while in the US its around 2 mil.

I'm a bit torn here because I don't like to be too negative about the DS but I also don't like to be unrealistic.  Speaking realistically, it's not good if PSP keeps outselling the DS, even if it will take two years to "catch up".

For one thing, the sales gap isn't going to be this small forever.  If Sony remains the leader, then it could easily overtake Nintendo thanks to Christmas sales (in Japan, it will probably take longer elsewhere).

For another thing, even if it doesn't expand the gap, the fact that the PSP is selling this well at all means Nintendo has lost its monopoly.  It's still too early to say if PSP will be a long-term success, but going by the fact that it's consistently outsold DS in Japan for about two months now, it seems that Nintendo is not the only handheld maker in town anymore.

Finally, Mario Kart and Kirby look like awesome games, but ultimately Japan will go to whomever has the best RPGs first.  Right now, PSP is the only system with a real RPG at all (Tales of Eternia), so that doesn't bode very well for DS.

DS is going to be a success, but I can't understand how anyone can still delude themselves into believing Nintendo will win this fight with both hands tied behind its back.
That's my opinion, not yours.
