Will PAL games work on the ntsc cube?

I recently got MKD but it was PAL so i tried to play it. After i put it in all it gave me was a Nodisk error.

Is it supposed to not work at all?

You need a Freeloader...

AFAIK it will say that when there is an incompatible disc. Such as a PAL disc on a NTSC console (without a Freeloader). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I tried putting an NTSC disc in without the Freeloader to see what mystery screens would pop up and I got the no disc thing, then the GC refused to read any other disc until I turned it off and on again. Yeah, you'll need a Freeloader. MK: DD has a 60Hz option, so there'll be no TV related problems.
