Next Generation Nintendo Systems
« on: December 26, 2004, 09:26:42 AM »
Hey, I just purchased a Gamecube system and I am somewhat regretting it because I am afraid that Nintendo will screw me again by not allowing me to play Gamecube games on their next system. That is one of the things I like about Playstation because you can play PS1 Games on PS2....just wondering if anyone knows if Nintendo will create a new system wich allows us to play Gamecube games...

Well i realy shouldn't comment since Nintendo hasn't officially (to my knowlege), but i think i remember reading somewhere that the Revolution will be able to play Gamecube games. But on the other hand the chances of that being just a rumor are high. I do think that would be a good move for Nintendo though if they would do it. It would make me very happy to still be able to play Metroid Prime (among other things) on the Revolution. Heck, they already do it on their handhelds so why not on they're consoles. I'm not holding my breath but i am keeping my fingers crossed.

Satoru Iwata (Nintendo's president) apparently said (of Nintendo's next console) in an interview with Japan's Famitsu magazine about a year ago...
Quote

"It will be able to use the games already created in the previous generation. And it is something that will work."

Of course, there have been a lot of rumors flying around, saying that the Revolution will be some sort of crazy absurd system like nobody's ever seen before, and it won't have a controller, and will be powered by brainwaves, and all sorts of other crazy stuff, so we really don't know anything. But I think it's a safe guess that it'll at least be capable of playing GameCube games, and it'll at least have a port to plug in a GameCube controller.

An ideal solution would be to make the next Gameboy able to play GC games / GC discs, so games will continue being made for GC forever, and if you don't want to buy the handheld you can still play them on your home console. Remember how Nintendo were bragging about how the GC would have an 8+ year lifespan?

Don't forget it should have "Gameboy TV output" (GC-GB Player functionality) out of the box.  That's something I dearly hoped GCN had.

It's such a bother having to hook up older systems to play their games. When I got my PS2, I threw all my other consoles in a pile and set it on fire because I was angry about having to hook multiple consoles up to the radiation box.

I love it when people say stuff like this. Why cant you have the new system AND the Gamecube? Nothing says that you must throw away your old system once a new one comes out.

What if your old system breaks down? Instead of buying a new one you can just play your games on the new system.

Well the DS can play N64 games..only, you'd have to buy them again.

Just take good care of your old systems so by the time they break you'll be too old to hold a controller without your hands shaking and your eyes watering.

And what if apes start flying out of my....  Seriously though, if you are worried about it, buy a new Gamecube towards the end of its life. You know you will be able to pick one up for about the price of a new game. Oh, and there is always eBay.

"Hey, I just purchased a Gamecube system and I am somewhat regretting it because I am afraid that Nintendo will screw me again by not allowing me to play Gamecube games on their next system."

How are they screwing you?  There's nothing stopping you from keeping your Gamecube and continuing to play it.  And it's not their fault you only bought a Cube now so you can't get mad at them for switching formats too soon.  It looks like the Cube will have the normal five year life.

I want the Revolution to have backwards compatibility for two reasons.  1. Because the PS3 will have it and the Revolution should match its features.  2. Backwards compatibility suggests a more traditional controller design so I don't have to worry about some wacky powerglove sh!t that only works well for a few gimmick games.  But backwards compatibility isn't a make or break issue to me and it shouldn't be for anyone.  I still have my SNES and play it all the time.  It's entirely up to the individual if they keep their old systems and games.  I think Nintendo should include it because there ARE people who consider it a make or break issue but it shouldn't have to be.

I agree with you. I'm afraid they're going to screw up the new system with a "revolutionary" feature that will "revolutionize" the way games are played ... Sort of like the "revolutionary" DS.

In the tradition of "Best Week Ever" I look at the next generation like this:
3 different Xbox 2's: downgrade
Revoltion having backwards compatibility: upgrade
Only being able to use a power glove: downgrade
PS3: downgrade

Anyways, Not every Revolution purchaser, has a Gamecube, but they might want to buy SSB Melle, or Eternal Darkness. Im all for that. Heck, My TV has one AV plug andd its a pain to unplug it for older systems

Simply put, in a market where the PS3 is going to be backwards compatible with the last two generations of Sony consoles... Nintendo would be crazy not to make the Revolution backwards compatible with at least one generation of gaming.

I'm still bugged why there's a whole other thread on this topic.

And if you want to know, go to the screwball drips at IGN, they know eeeeeeverything.  Why just last week they reported that you're brain waves would function as a controller by sticking your head into the Revolution.  Wow IGN owns them other n00bs.

I've read somewhere that the PS3 will not be able to play psOne games.  That was months ago, however.  Pherhaps things have changed?
