DS Plays GB Games!!!!
« on: December 13, 2004, 09:33:26 AM »
First off, let me say, I am not taking credit for this.  IO Burn, from the blogging website LiveJournal, posted this in the Nintendo DS community.

I'd rather you not copy/paste practically entire articles, even if it is just Live Journal. -Bloodworth

Well that whole "GBC support requires another chip so it's not feasible" explanation is worthless now.  Sounds like the lack of that functionality is purely Nintendo trying to justify that third pillar nonsense.

Still even if they quite obviously removed the functionality for no good reason it's good that the mod is so easy to do.  With this and the Cube region mod it's like Nintendo is intentionally designing their systems to have easy mods.  Of course that does seperate harmless mods from piracy mods so maybe that's their plan.

Anyhoo I'm going to wait and see how widespread this mod becomes and wait for the Nintendo DS SP that includes GBC support.

Now if they can just figure out how to add a GBA link port I won't need to keep my SP around just for Cube link-ups....

I'm not gonna risk it... I'm happy with my DS as it is and I still have a GB, GBC and GBA.

My guess is that Nintendo is aware of how easy this mod is, so they resorted to a physical lock on the hardware.

The GBA has a switch in the cart slot which, when pressed by a GB/GBC game that doesn't have the proper notch, turns the GBA into it's GBC-mode. It seems obvious that if Nintendo were to ever remove the GBC-mode, they'd turn the switch into a "tab", and physically lock the hardware.

Just to note, he's saying that this mod will let you play GB/GBC games, but he's not saying you'll be able to play GBA games after your mod is done. I think you'd need to put a switch somewhere for that.

Looking inside my GBA's cart slot, the switch would be attached to the cart slot right about here (inside the red circle). That's right close to where this little "wire connection" can turn your DS into a GBC. And the switch in my GBA looks like it's part of a small "module" that could be disconnected. I don't know for sure, because I've never taken apart a GBA (although I took apart a GBC just about a month ago to clean it).

I'm guessing Nintendo simply took the switch out, and replaced it with a plastic tab.

I was saying before that some developers had supposedly made use of the GBA's GBC chip in some games, so cutting it out could cause compatibility problems. It's possible that maybe Nintendo wasn't able to put together a perfect solution that didn't need the GBC's chip, so they just left it in, and they might cut the chip out in a future "design tweak" to save some money some time down the road.

Either way, now I want to wander over to Nintendo of Canada (sometime after I get a DS) and ask them how many beers it will take to get them to accidentally "fix" my DS for me.

I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

You should distract them with some doughnuts.  Like that movie "Strange Brew"

Is it really fake? IO Burn has photographs of Pokemon blue running on the DS.  I'm still a bit skeptical though, because on a GBC or GBA, Pokemon Blue has default color palette that includes the color blue, does it not?

That's the best debunking I've seen yet. Much better than all of the "OMG LOL is fake" all the other "experts" were providing.

It's clear from the colors being wrong that it's just a GBC game running on an emulator for the GBA, but I still had some minor doubts about the debunking, considering that this guy said that he didn't have a digital camera, and was possibly using pics that were provided by some random bogus source, and he hadn't noticed that they were bogus.

But when the debunking page leeched his bandwidth for the pics, he swapped the pics out for pron, and he put back up the bogus pics with different filenames in order to keep his story going.

That just screams that this entire thing is absolutely bogus, and the guy who started this is a dirty slimeball, provoking people to void their warranties and then fry their brand new DS units.

Hey Switchblade, you can probably edit the word "bogus" into the title somewhere now.

i need to read an entire thread before i get too excited in the future.  to be honest, i somehow didn't realize that the DS didn't play pre-advance GB games...  o well.  still have my original game boy, game boy color, game boy advance, SP, and Game Boy Player.  no biggie.
