Are you a blindly-loyal vicious nutcase?
« on: December 03, 2004, 09:58:31 PM »
In recent days, Craig (from IGN Pocket) has been saying on IGN DS that Nintendo's pretty much just strolled through through the unchallenged handheld industry since it was created with their virtual monopoly, that everyone else who ever tried to put out a handheld was a joke, that the PSP is all that and a bag of chips, and that Sony is the first company to truely offer Nintendo some fair competition.

They've also had a guy named Juan answering the letters lately, and he flat-out said that he likes the PSP more than he does the DS.

Then the other day, Anoop reported from the DS launch in Japan, saying that it was boring, and not as good as Dragon Quest VIII's launch, and that he thinks the PSP's Japanese launch will be better.

Needless to say, they got some hate mail.

But, it seems Craig and the rest never got any hate mail in the ever-boring IGN Pocket. And they've noticed that everyone seems to hate Matt and the rest of the guys at IGN Cube. Logical conclusion? It must be Nintendo's fault!

They've decided that Nintendo's fans are the source of all their problems (or they figured out that getting them worked up generates hits for IGN), so they snapped and are fighting with them in their mailbag.

I suggest that we all stir the pot. It's fun! And it might save some babies! That's a good cause, isn't it? Send your hate mail to IGN DS.
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

I think it's seriously screwed up if they are generalizing the GameCube and DS community like that. I'm not going to IGN anymore, even though PGC has been my number 1 source anyway since e3 2001.

I can't wait to read a story on IGN DS about how AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL the PSP launch is even though the DS sold 230,000 there on day 1 and Sony aren't even shipping that many on day 1. IGN used to be okay, now they're just getting more and more pathetic by the day.

To be honest, I've actually noticed the sudden 'mood-change' over at IGN. It's strange... are they seriously doing it just to piss people off? What's the point? Aren't they supposed to just cover gaming? Eh. I can't really say I care much though, being mostly interested in non-objective stuff -- like news... and not previews/reviews anyway.. but that DS launch report was just taking the mickey. I'd already seen pictures from the other tokyo districts, with people queuing around corners waiting to get the DS. What good will it do when one of the bigger american sites are downplaying the turn-out of something as important to Nintendo as a hardware launch? Makes no sense. Ah well.

You'll remember that DS vs PSP article they had a while ago...Craig's the only one left on ANY of the channels that thinks the DS is better.

And that is why I propose we go to IGN's building, steal all the Insider stuff, then watch them all burn...ho ho...buuuuuurn....

You know, I never considered myself to get furious when they bash Nintendo products or anything like that, but that was pretty harsh.  They keep on saying how it's their own opinion and etc., but when someone else states their opinion on what they think is better they pounce on them.  It is pretty sad.  A good article I read, though, was on MSNBC.com under the tech area.  They did a pretty good review of the DS and it seemed like the guy actually took some time to play with the system and everything.  I like how he especially said that yelling at the system in Feel the Magic was a good lot of fun.

Well, first it was the console market that got bastardized, now it's the handheld....what next??  The PC market?  I can just imagine when a game like Barbie's Murdering Spree or something like that beats Unreal Tournament 200X.

If IGN continues to do a poor job at reporting the news (which, over all, is simply what is going on here), there are two ways this can go.

Either people will stop going to IGN and they'll slowly wither and die *or* people will continue to go to IGN to "stir the pot" which makes more people want to go there to check out all the action - all of which increases their readership - and their advertising revenue - making them continue to report "news" that pisses people off so more people will come to "stir the pot".

I stopped going to IGN *years* ago.  I would reccomend that everyone else do the same.

I disagree. IGN really isn't that bad. I consider 1up.com the worst. Sure, there appears to be a swing among editors, but i still believe that their game reviews are the cleanest, most organized reviews on the web, beside gamespot.com, which is an excellent unbiased website in my opinion.

I think the "mood-change" has been in motion since the end days of the N64. They seem to think of themselves as the most important people in the world of gaming, and pretty much think that whatever they say, should be ("Nintendo didn't follow my suggestion to add kart skins to Mario Kart? Well, that's gonna dock them a whole point..."). It's come to a point that I just flat out ignore any "Editorials" they post of the site, since they just repeat the same bile they've been spewing for years. I could go on and on about what is wrong with IGNorant, but no one wants to hear my rantings.

EDIT: I think the only thing IGN's done right over the past generation is their Game Collection pages. In fact, that's the ONLY good thing about them.

IGN is garbage. A couple of Weeks ago, Nintendojo suggested they prefered PSP, and i thought it was silly but looking at this junk, its no doubt to me that its true..... Theres the general consensus that many "Mainstream" video game websites simply dislike Nintendo and wish they failed...

The DS is doing very well... If you disliked IGN as much as i did. Simply dont visit the website... By not visiting the website, their advertising goes down. They loose Money. Go to Gamespot or Gamespy or Gameinformer instead.

Craig Harris is one of the few IGN editors I don't hate. So I actually kind of liked the IGNDS site.

Then Matt said he was going to help with the letters section. Oh God. I knew right then the site was going to go down the toilet.

Matt pretty much admitted on IGNcube that he was being more harsh on the DS than the PSP because Nintendo promised to revolutionize gaming and Sony didn't. So basically, because Sony set its goals real low and achieved them, it's alright. But since the universe hasn't exploded due to the DS failing to change day into night, life into death, and finite to infinite on launch day, then it sucks and anybody that says otherwise is blind.

I'm getting near my limits with IGN.

Gamespy and IGN merged so going to Gamespy keeps IGN alive as well. But maybe if GS gets all the hits they might decide to kill off IGN...
Interesting enough, Gamespy seems to be a bit better than IGN, I think at least half of their staff say the DS is going to win and a few more think the PSP will win but the DS is still better. They were like IGN at first, all doubting the DS but when it was introduced at E3 they started to love it. Maybe other sites don't want to admit mistakes and simply didn't revise their oppinion after the DS was playable because of pride?

I can't help but notice that it seems most websites would love to see Nintendo go under, as if they were all conspiring against it. I think most people critisize Nintendo because they hate to admit that they enjoy their "E" rated games. Most die hard GTA and Halo fans all fondly (at least the ones I know) remember Mario in 2D, but still critisize Nintendo. For example, the following conversation I experience at least once a week:

Me: Remember the old Super Mario Games?
Hypocrit #1: Yeah those were good times.
Hypocrit #2: I beat the games a dozen times.
Hypocrit #1: My SNES still works. Played the other day.
Hypocrit #2: Yep good old reliable Nintendo.
Hypocrit #1: Did you get your PS2 back yet?
Hypocrit #2: Yep, and its still broken! Had to send it back!
Me: Unlike the original Gameboy.
Hypocrit #1: Yeah, that thing was indestructable.
Hypocrit #2: Fell down stairs, water damage, two story drop...works like a swiss clock.
ME: So, you guys like Nintendo?
Hypocrit #1: No! Its a I LOVE HALO 2 system!
Hypocrit #2: Nintendo Sucks!!11!1

So, people have an inferiority complex when it comes to Nintendo, because every game released since after the NES has some kind of Nintendo influence on it. It is true that some people over at IGN probably hate Nintendo (God knows why), but I don't believe that represents the entire site, and most of their reviews are fair and accurate. Don't like IGN? Go to Gamespot.com, probably the best multi-platform site on the web. Just don't go to the forums. So...many...Xbox...fanboys...

Yep.. Like I said, I only read the objective parts of their sites, like check for news updates, but even things like straight up reporting on some news event seem too good of a chance to not start spewing crap inside these days. :/

Okay, I tend to defend IGN a lot, because frankly, I think they're right.  The DS launch line-up sucks.  I said I would wait until the games came out to make my judgement, and here they are, and Super Mario 64 DS is the only one that could be considered a must-have (with Feel the Magic being considered a sort-of-must-have).  So I think it's entirely fair for people to criticize the DS at this point.

Having said that, IGN is being incredibly biased in favour of the PSP.  I was reading their current article on PSP load times, and even though the best load times are still about 10 seconds, the article was very positive and even apologized for it.  Is Sony paying these guys to sell the PSP or what?  10-second-plus load times are ridiculous, especially on a portable.  I do not want to sit on the bus quietly gawking at loading screens for 30 seconds.

I have to say, I've followed IGN for a long time, long after other people left because the guys at IGN wanted to actually make a living from the site, but there is a serious bias over there in this upcoming handheld war, and I'm about an inch away from forgetting IGN exists.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I don't mind GameSpy for the most part, but one thing that I really dislike about them is how they insist that "Rare butchered Miyamoto's classic arcade DK design which had so much more character".  Because, you know, an ape that throws barrels at a carpenter is the epitome of in-depth storytelling.  But recently they seem to have shaped up on that - the DKC2 review was based on how the game looked and played, as opposed to the bitter rantings of why Rare sucks (which I seem to be unable to avoid, but hey, I'm used to seeing it now).

See, I'm absolutely baffled as to why Nintendo released Mario 64 as their DS Flagship title as opposed to Wario Ware Touched!. I'm willing to bet it would have gotten plenty of both mainstream and hardcore gamers to get a DS.  To me it's a worry when Nintendo Japan, who have had years of experience at creating precision control devices and groundbreaking games offer up a port of an existing game with an awkward method of control for their first system title.  But it's okay, because you'll "get used to it".

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh here -- I haven't even played Mario 64 DS yet.  I'm basing my opinion on existing reviews from a lot of different sources.  But I'd have to say that Feel the Magic is definitely the title that I'm most interested in at the moment.

I kinda feel that Mario 64 was the launch title for two reasons:

First, when the previous system lauched with a *great* title that wasn't a "Mario" title, everyone threw fits (Luigi's Mansion)...

Second, Mario 64 is a very indepth game - rich and full in game play.
Wario Ware, while one of my favorite games (I've got both the GBA and GCN versions, and I'm highly anticipating the two upcoming titles) is pretty... I don't know.  But it's not really a Mario 64 type-game...  I'm not sure how to phrase this...
