...and we still freaking don't know what that mystery port's for.  I mean, we know it's for a headset, but that's not been officially confirmed by Nintendo, nor has its functions.  You'd think the day before release we'd know something.

Well it's for both...  as it's for a headset (stereo headphones and/or microphone).

or exactly as stated:
"10. Headphone/Microphone Connectors -- For connection of stereo
headphones, external microphone or headset (sold separately). "

What mistery I'm curious about is the following:

apparently the GBA SP headphone adapter can still be used ala entry 11:

11. External Extension Connector (5.2V IN) -- Allows connection of
Nintendo DS AC Adapter (included) for recharging the battery or
operation of the DS using household power. ***The Game Boy Advance
Headphone adapter (sold separately) can also be connected. ***

Now, the question... can I just use the front jack instead?

Thanks, Shecky...but what still bugs me is that (I don't remember who) some big Nintendo dude on said around the time the new design was released that there was some still big feature they had, having to do with that port.  But I don't think an external microphone is what they're talking about...unless they're planning to use the headset for VoIP.
