I pladed DS at GameStop 2day...most amazing experience I've ever had with a video game. If anyone's skeptical about it, don't be.
Okay, so my sister and me walk into GameStop, and there they are - now, I've never seen one of these babies before, so I'm pretty darn excited. And she doesn't even give a damn. But I convince her to PictoChat for a few minutes, and she was hooked - she, a total girly girl, even enjoyed playing Metroid. My mom had to literally drag her out of the store...quite a site, what with four clerks taking a break from Halo 2 to laugh at it, and all.
Of course, my actual experience was amazing. PictoChat was great, but I can't see myself using it too much...but that's just me. And then the real show, Metroid, was great - it looked crisp, and surprisingly enough, the opening sequence was in full 3D - on both screens. Weird, I'd heard that that wasn't possible at the same time...
The different control schemes were absent though - I was looking forward to seeing the different ones. The one I used was more or less dual-analog. My leftthumb was on the control pad (did I mention it's really tiny? Oh well, better than being bulky, I guess), and my right thumb on the touch pad, with my right index finger shooting with the R Trigger (you could shoot with the L Trigger as well). It took me a while to get used to it, and I never completely did, what with the switching back and forth from the touch-pad to the buttons.
One complaint I had was, and I don't know why, was I kept wanting to use the B button as the A - most likely because the area where the B button is located is more or less the relative location of the A button on the SP. Oh well, that took a bit of time to get the hang of as well.
Back to the demo - the sound was unbelievable as well. Stereo sound does make a difference, guys, even on such a small thing.
There were three options in the demo - Training, Multiplayer, and Settings. Unfortunately I did not find the Control Settings in the Settings menu, but I found an area to, among other things, change my nickname - this kind of upsetted me. I was hoping you'd just nickname your DS and that would be your nickname for whatever you did, but apparently, that's not the case.
In Training, we had one mode which was basically a survival mode of how long you could last. Then there was one where you just moved through a straightforward level, blowing things up on your way. Then there was Morph Ball training, just rolling through, getting as many blue rings or whatever as you could.
Overall, I had an all right experience. The demo was slightly disappointing, as it was almost too demo-ish, but that's just me - some will find it as entertaining as my sister did, who probably could have enjoyed it for hours on end. I am however looking forward to the final build of Metroid Prime Hunters. So, bascially, the DS blew me away, the demo didn't - it's free anyways, so I mean what more can you ask?
Oh, one last note - the menu that opens up when you turn on the DS didn't impress me at all. It was way too simple and clunky, probably could have been done on the NES (the interface, I mean). But there's some nice stuff in there.
If you feel more comfortable asking me questions than chainchomp, go right ahead. :-P
