Can GameCube do the lighting found in Splinter Cell on XboX?
« on: February 12, 2003, 09:48:55 AM »
When the system specs were all released I was led to believe that Cube would have better lighting effects than Xbox.  But when I look at Splinter Cell and Doom I can't find a title that has such dinamic lighting effects on Cube.  Such a broad spectrum.  Real universal lighting.  I thought Metroid had some kick ass lighting, but it just can't compare to the realism of the lighting effects in splinter cell.  Metroid is stronger in other departments.  What I'm wondering is can the Cube do what the XboX can do?

On a side note I would like to mention RE4 which has the best graphics that I've ever seen in real time.  It has some badass graphics but isn't coming out untill 2004.

Probably...

GameCube lacks a programmable T&L engine, so oftentimes the lighting might be a little lacking.  However, if you want to see some very nice dynamic lighting, check out Luigi's Mansion or Rogue Leader.  It may be a little troubling to code around it, but it certainly does not mean that the capability isn't there.

At any rate, I am fully expecting the GCN version of Splinter Cell to waste the Xbox version.  Let's see if time proves me right.

Yes, the GameCube will be able to do the same lighting in Splinter Cell that you see on the Xbox.  It won't be done in the exact same manner TECHNICALLY, but in terms of what the end user will see, it shouldn't be apparent that they've done anything different with it.

While I'm pretty dang confident that it's technically possible, we'll see what Ubisoft actually does with it.  It'd be really easy for them to just do the bare minimum to get it up and running and then forget about it and let it sell on name alone.  A lot of the recent "Tom Clancy" gamecube games have been really poor conversions, Ghost Recon and Sum of All Fears are solid examples of this- games that started off great and suffered horribly in the translation.

I think I read right here on PGC that the GCN version was going to be something special...  I seem to have lost the link though.  I am not sure if it was here or not, but I remember somewhere saying that the GCN version would be substantially upgraded from the Xbox version, and would put the PS2 version to shame.  (If you remember, the PS2 screens released so far have been FAR from impressive)

I'm sooo ready for this game. I got to play a few levels when I was home for Christmas. NICE game. I never was really into the whole stealth crap, but the nice lighting makes for an interesting time.

From what I've read, each version will have it's own set of special features/weapons. So the Xbox will have an exclusive feature and weapon, the PS2 will have it's own exclusive features and weapon, as will the GC version. I've also read that the GC version will be able to connect to the GBA game...

How much do you want to bet that the GBA connection will let you use the GBA as the "Palm" device Sam uses in the game?

if you guys really want to see the lighting effects the gamecube is capable of, you should really look at the screen shots of resident evil 4. im not talking pre-rendered, im talking real time 3d. thats some amazing stuff.

I have really high hopes for the Gamecube version.  I, for one, am really happy that 3rd party developers have embraced the idea of making games that have GCN/GBA connectivity.  This feature automatically gives Nintendo a one-up on the competitors.  I believe Ubisoft will make a very high quality port to Gamecube this time around.  At least, that's what all the websites have been saying.

I'm betting that's what they do, actually.  Makes perfect sense.

I just hope I don't need to buy the GBA version of the game to fully enjoy the GC title. If I had to, that alone would kill any hype I had for the game. I'm kinda busy with my current games and this game keeps falling off my radar the more and more I have to wait for it
