Midway Arcade Treasures 2 - Glitched Control Setup?
« on: October 12, 2004, 04:40:08 PM »
I cant seem to be able to adjust the controls in this game. For example, for Rampage - World Tour, I keep going to the Custom setups, but it always goes for the default control setup. What gives?

Unadjustable controls in a retro compilation?  NO!  Not again!

I haven't found a copy yet so I can't say for sure if the problem is there.  One would assume that reviews would mention it unless they did the usual "review the PS2 version and then assume the Cube and Xbox versions are the same" routine.  I do recall having some problems with Treasures 1 due to me accidentally pressing the cancel button when I thought I was confirming.  So try some different buttons just in case Midway programmed a really awkward options menu.

Hm, actually, I think it was because I used a 3rd party memory card it wasnt saving the controls properly. I popped in a regular Nintendo Memory Card (59) and it let me use my custom controls.

But there are a few problems in the menu, for example. The highlight bar in the options menu doesnt appear sometimes. Quite annoying. The attract mode for Primal Rage seems to lag pretty badly, but gameplay is just fine.

The interview videos (Unlike Mortal Kombat 3's) have a really low volume. Digital Eclipse seemed to blasst it up as much as they could, but man...they sound like crap...

Oh, and you can turn free play off.

I'm quite satisfied so far...

I don't have the game yet (because I can't find it. ARRRRRRGH!) but according to reports from other people there's a problem with two of MKII's secrets.  You can no longer use the random select or fight Smoke.  Why?  Because those secrets require you to push the start button and the useless idiots who worked on the game made it so the start button pauses the game and opens the menu.  So the game is thus no longer arcade perfect.  How come every compilation is always wrecked by some stupid developer who doesn't know sh!t about what they're doing?  I'll still buy it but MKII multiplayer is going to suck without random select.  My friends and I use it exclusively since the character balance is pretty poor in that game.

If I ran a game company I would go over every re-release with a fine tooth comb to ensure an authentic experience.  There would be no button switching or missing Donkey Kong levels on my watch.

Okay I got the game tonight and stupid MKII oversight aside it seems like a much more solid presentation than the first collection.  For example you can actually use the analog stick in the menu this time and the setup is more straight forward.  Primal Rage has this irritating slowdown in the attract mode and on the Vs screen.  The gameplay isn't affected fortunately though I hear the special moves and fatalities have had their controls changed for some reason.  Oh and the amount of time you get to do a fatality in these arcade versions of MK is insanely short compared to the SNES versions which, although likely authentic, is going to take time to get used to.

There is one really big flaw with this collection though and it was nothing to do with the conversion.  Most of these games SUCK.  A lot of them have either not aged well at all or they just plain always sucked.  I would consider MK2&3, Primal Rage, Timber, Total Carnage, Wizard or Wor and Rampage: World Tour to all be pretty decent and worth playing.  The rest are not likely going to be played more than once.  Some like Cyberball, Xybots, and Hard Drivin' are cool ideas that are held back by hardware limitations at the time.  However Spy Hunter II and Pit Fighter were considered crap games when they came out so why bother to include them?  Plus they're taking the spots of STUN Runner and Mortal Kombat which I would put in the "good" category.  So basically 7/20 of the games are worth owning which is less than half.  Comparitively I would rank Treasures 1 as having at least 14/24 being good-to-decent titles.  Realistically we could combine the best of both into one collection.  Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is still worth $20 for the 7 good titles in my opinion but Midway's got to lay off the filler or Treasures 3 is going to be pretty bleh.

Well, it shows the history of Midway: Gradual descent into suckiness...

Did Rampage - Universal Tour come to the arcades first? Or was that console exclusive?

Oh, and I kinda liked Xybots. Xenophobe is kinda fun (I'm sure it'll be better with 3 players)

What really bothers me is that the only good interview video is the Mortal Kombat 3 development video. Even though its hideously outdated since the console developers praise the PSX machine.

I believe it's a console exclusive.  I've heard it's not very good though.

I got MAT2 for hugebox.

It's easy to accidentally not save new control configurations by selecting new controls, hitting 'A' to accept, and then hitting 'X' to go back (probably B for GC). It won't save unless you hit 'A' to accept new changes on the main options menu, too. It's kinda weird.

But when I went to swap controls when the game was running, it showed my changes, but it just wouldnt map the buttons...

Its working now. It might be because I got a 3rd party memory card (Apparently this Inter-Act 1000 block card saves faster than regular 59 cards. Might've missed something...

I think the Nintendo 1019 memory card saves faster, too. It might suffer the same problem.
