"However, it also WILL NOT appeal to many people - I would safely say that more people will dislike it than like it. Why? Like we said in the review, it's a very kiddie game - it's target audience is clearly young gamers - I would say 10 and under. For that reason, we had to score it low. Remember, we aren't scoring games strictly on our personal opinions, we're also scoring them based on how much we think THE GAMING PUBLIC will like them."

That doesn't make any f*cking sense.  Does Roger Ebert think about how the public will accept a film when he reviews it?  No.  He uses his own opinion just like every credible movie reviewer.  It should be the same for games.  If the review is just what the gaming public likes why write a review.  The game sales are then a proper way to gauge how "good" a game is.

If we go by what the gaming public will like then:

Madden 2005: 10
Madden 2006: 10
...
Madden 3534: 10
Pikmin 2: 5
Ikaruga: 1
Final Fantasy Anything: 10
Any other RPG: 2

A reviewer is supposed to give his own opinion because he is "supposed" to be well informed and have a good knowledge of games so that he can give an accurate view of a game's quality without allowing public opinion to affect the final review.  Everyone knows that in regards to entertainment that just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good and tons of good stuff is completely ignored.  The gaming public are ignorant boobs.  Those of us who actually read reviews before buying a game want a real opinion.  If you're not interested in Paper Mario 2 you're going to ignore the review anyway.  Give the game a score that's relevant to those interested in the game.

Plus using the "gaming public" arguement every Cube game is going to get a low score because the gaming public plays mostly PS2.

All this explanation does it show that the review, and thus the entire magazine, is worthless.

Urgh. Can't keep the bile down.

This is the worst thing I've ever seen a gaming mag do. It tops all the stupid things EGM has done in the past few years. Only the wrath of Reggie can fix this situation.

I wonder if Billy will comment on this whole debacle.

This PM2 stuff was ALMOST the worst thing I've seen.

A few years back, GI published a poorly-scored review of Eternal Darkness a year before it came out, based on the E3 2001 build.  BAH.

I remember that one.

You sure it was GI too?

Okay, I'm making sure never to read that magazine ever again.

well it just goes to show you video game reviews don't hold alot of weight anymore....too many crappy playstation games have saturated the market and reviewers just don't know how to review games anymore.

Things I learned from Game Informer:

1. "Well-made" games do not deserve good reviews
2. Paper Mario will not appeal to many people
3. Paper Mario is for kids
4. Kids are not people
5. More people dislike than like games that are kiddie (that's why nobody plays Mario Kart or Pokemon, right?)
6. Reviews should be written for the Gaming Public, which doesn't include kids or anyone who likes games that are kiddie
7. If someone were to design a "well-made" game specifically for kids under the age of 10, it would deserve a low score.
But, thankfully....
8. It's still okay for the one or two million people that buy Paper Mario to have their own opinions.  *Phew!*
That's my opinion, not yours.

This is so true. Yesterday I was telling a friend of mine about gamespots review and all he told me was that everyones tired of mario that its just for kids and all people want was blood, blood and more blood. He started to compare it with Halo 2, MKD, and GTA:SA but can u really compare those games to a Mario game? Yes it's true that the general public has change but to me it's all mainstream advertising and Nintendo its guilty of not advertising thier games enough. MP was advertise for like what? 2 , 3 weeks? while GTA:VC was commercials have been on like forever. Back to the topic: I dont understand how GI score this game so low, I think the reviewers where on acid or something  and now their inbox are loaded with rabid flaming emails.I like most of GI's reviews but this one was not the case.I really like to hear what's Billy's and the PGC  staff take on this. Some mags are famous for giving previews of games and getting the game hype up and then bashing it to hell when the review comes out.

I just skimmed through IGN's review.  They gave it a 9.1 which is perfectly acceptable and shows that they liked it.  I did notice two nitpicks they pointed out however that bugged me and show that reviewers often just don't "get it".

First they complained that the graphics didn't look enough like real paper.  They felt the graphics look too much like sprites.  I question that as a bad thing.  As a long time Mario fan I find that a sprite related look provides more nostalgia.  A lot of the appeal of a title like Paper Mario 2 is to have a lot of references for the fans.  If they're going to go to the trouble to make sure there are realistic paper physics then the might as well just make a cliche looking 3D game.  Obviously Nintendo was going for a certain look.

Second they complained about the lack of voice acting.  Again as a Mario fan I consider that a postive thing.  Mario's voice irritates me.  I liked it back when he didn't speak.  So thus again this looks less like lazyness and more like a deliberate design.  A silent Mario again has more nostalgia.  Plus voice acting in English translations of Japanese games are usually terrible so why complain about their absence?  If voice acting was included odds are people would complain that the voice acting sucked.

Not every game needs to have super realistic graphics and sound.  Sometimes less is more and a game's graphics and sounds are intentionally "dated" for effect.  Reviewers always seem to miss this.  Graphics and sound should always be based on what the designer was trying to do and how close they came to it.

Yeah, lack of voice acting doesn't make Paper Mario a worse game, it PREVENTS it from being a worse game. I guess they had to find reasons to justify why it got 9.1 and not 9.8 or something though, but they could have found something better to say than that.

I think the Paper argument was kind of stupid, but it is fair to say that Nintendo is not the king of presentation, and that's an area where...some of their games could use improvement.  In this case I'm inclined to agree that the game works better as it is, for nostalgiac purposes, but a lot of Nintendo titles could use more polish.  Having said that, Pikmin 2 is a step in the right direction.
My frothing demand for this game increases...I couldn't find it last night, I'll have to check again today.
That's my opinion, not yours.

I have the same question as Damos and 1 more.

Is this game as kiddy as it looks? ...I dont mean to sound like such a smart-@ss but it looks like a game that I might not want to show my friends.

I have played Superstar Saga and I did like it ...not LOVE it but like it.

It comes out in November in Australia.

Why wouldn't you want to show Paper Mario 2 to your friends? They sound immature, and if Paper Mario is "kiddy", then they'd feel right at home.
