FF Advent Children the look of SE on next gen?
« on: September 05, 2004, 08:04:58 PM »
Gamespot just had a new preview of FF Advent Children, and it had me thinking.  Is this a good representation of the graphics and/or cutscenes that will happen in their next gen games, primarily FF.  Or is it movie quality and nothing more pertaining to their next gen games from a technical standpoint?  Post your thoughts.  I guess I think the cutscenes of their next gen games should definitely rival FFAC, and perhaps the real time graphics could be almost as good too, atleast better than half as good.  Only time will tell I guess.

There's absolutely nothing stopping developers from making their FMVs look as good as FF:AC; in fact, Blizzard and Capcom already make cinematics that are as good looking.

In-game graphics, there's practically no chance that they'll look as good. Not even Unreal 3 engine looks as good, and that's destined to come to PC somewhere in 2006 (same year as the new consoles should be out, and if the past is anything to go by, PCs at the time will be more powerful than the new consoles).

Realistically, I would say you're looking at maybe two or three 'generations' time before in-game graphics look as nice as FF:ACs; which is probably going to be in about nine years time.

Im not very aware of Advent Children, but I do remember that "FF the spirits within" failed bad, so I dont see how this one would do better. Anyway after watching RE4 on gamecube I doubt there can be any significant improvement in the graphics department for any game, imo its a huge mistake to go "look! our next gen console has better graphics" when the difference will be minimal (but the price difference will most likely be huge XD), I like Nintendo's aproach of innovation above graphics. Sure it will matter for us (people that go to internet game forums and know what "polygon count" means) but the average joe couldnt care less. For example for my dad mario sunshine and mario 64 looks the same, he said "where the hell are the good graphics, you made me spend $250 for this?" and I was like "are you blind?" LOL, then I realized I just spend to much time in the internet, and that he had a point. Games already look really good imo.

Advent Children is a straight-to-DVD film coming out in Japan. It's a sequel to Final Fantasy VII, and features all of the characters from the game who are still living (and via flashback, some who aren't...). The film looks much better than The Spirits Within, and since it's a direct sequel to an existing game, at least we know that the 'Final Fantasy' elements we love will be present there. That doesn't mean it will be a great film or anything but I give it a better chance of success than 'Spirits'. What I have read of the story so far seems to be on-par with the game; it's a logical extension. I haven't heard anything about a US release, but some feel it's inevitable given the success of FFVII over here. Then again I haven't looked at an update for it in some time, so that might have changed.

As for whether or not cut-scenes will be on-par with this...I guess the only answer is yeah, eventually. And eventually the in-game graphics will look that good. And eventually they'll look even better. I hope the next generation is a marked improvment in game quality, though there are a ton of great games out there right now that would be hard to top.
