New Gamecubes - No progressive scan
« on: August 18, 2004, 04:42:16 AM »
I'd like to hear everyone's take on this topic.    I apologize if this topic has been discussed earlier,  and it's probably old news but I did some looking around in this forum and didn't see anything on it.

As was indicated in EGM Magazine a while back and on IGN this week, Gamecubes manufactured after May, 2004 will no longer support progressive scan.   The digital A/V port will not be a part of new Gamecubes.

I suppose this has to be a cost saving measure from Nintendo but I'm not too happy with the decision.  Apparently, only a small percentage of Gamecube owners actually use it anyway.  But even if you don't currently use it,  the next TV you purchase might support it.

Anyway, If you have an interest in this feature and would like to see it in the next gen. console I encourage you to call Nintendo and ask that they log your request/wish (1-800-255-3700).

If you are going to purchase a new Gamecube and want to make sure the hardware supports progressive scan, please refer to the following Nintendo document:

AFAIK Nintendo vowed to replace any non-PS GCs with PS GCs if the customer contacts them or something.

Yeah, and I agree that's a great thing.  I heard that it would be a refurbished unit, but it sure beats nothing.   I just hope that the next system doesn't start off with no progressive from the get-go.

Also, it's kind of strange that people who buy a cube today might buy a game published by Nintendo, read the game box and see progressive scan on there and then later find out that thier system could never support that feature.   With that said, I sure hope Nintendo continues to publish titles in the future that support progressive scan for the Gamecube !    I dunno, it just seems like a strange thing to start removing things from a product.  But it's probably happened before with some other Nintendo product.

You're probably better off checking out our original article from March  http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=7&threadid=8525

Cost cutting measures like this are pretty common in the second half of a console's life-span.

It's probably just a way to streamline the cube production. I can certainly see why if less that 1% of the user base even use the feature. Of course, looking at the way IGN's reacting, you'd think it was the end of the frickin' world...

Reminds me that the manuals claim you need RGB cables for PAL60 output too. Makes me wonder why I could enable PAL60 with my RCA connection.

It's Nintendo's fault for not supplying Component cables in retail stores to kick the asses of Intec's and Pelican's aweful S-video cables.

NOW I WONDER WHY LEZ THAN 1% BUY THE FRIGGING THINGS.

BECAUSE LESS THAN 1% BOTHER TO VISIT THE FRIGGING ONLINE STORE.  I bet most people just don't know about the cables, and don't know about the store.  I DON'T KNOW.  Ask Dr. Gangreen.  He's got tomatoes.

I'm curious, when you exchange for the refurbished one, do they at least make up the difference?

Yeah this is annoying.

In another year or two, I'll get a HDTV.  The games will look like crap without the progressive scan output.

Well I guess this is a "perk" for buying  a Indago cube at launch I have a HDTV but no component cables. But anywho I dont need them just for a microscopic better quality picture and a resolution tweak(im not sure about that one concearning the cube) since my HDTV is a 17 inch widescreen LCD.

As PGC's article mentioned, Nintendo's not "not going to support progressive scan anymore", but rather, they're chopping the digital AV port. Which means there's no place to plug in the GameCube's Component Cable (which is required for progressive scan).

PGC's article also mentioned that Nintendo might be working on a GameCube Component Cable that runs through the Nintendo-standard "multi-out" port. (Any news on this?)

Which would mean that this only affects those 15-25 people who already bought Component Cables for their GameCubes. If/when their GameCubes break. And can't be repaired. And they don't want to upgrade to the Revolution.
Poor people should eat wheat!
I'm about to go punk up some 3rd parties so they don't release games on other hardware, ciao!

Like you say, that's really one of my main concerns - how to either fix my hardware or get a new unit if this one breaks (one that supports progressive scan).    I had always hoped I could just buy a new one (I'd rather not have a refurbished one).  Maybe they will come out with that cable someday.

Probably nobody's going to agree with me on this, but if they wanted to remove a feature to save production costs I wish it had been the Gameboy advance connectivity crap.    For me, that whole thing is pretty useless and disappointing.  But I guess that's not an easy thing to remove like a A/V port.   I guess it just bugs me that they waste so much energy on Gameboy connectivity but somebody must be using it.

Also, just wondering, has it been confirmed that Revolution will be backward compatible (I have no idea) ?

There's nothing to remove about GBA connectivity, it's merely a software problem.
