No DS Games from Rare
« on: August 10, 2004, 09:48:10 AM »
I'm suprised no one else has mentioned this yet.
Check the note at the bottom of MagicBox's DS Game List

Well, there go the chances of a Killer Instinct port to DS....

Edit: They were wrong, I suppose.

Who knows?

More likely that Rare will support the DS in the future than PSP...since we all know how much microsoft hates Sony.

I think it'll come eventually...providing the DS is a success....here's to hopin!

Oh yeah, except that they never left GBA development. They still make GBA games.

Also, I could care less because frankly I don't think a touch screen would make collecting 5 zillion bafmodads any more fun.

And really, even if they announced anything, I doubt we would see it until 2007.

I mean it even took them 2 years to released a completed GBA game...

I will play them and they will be fun.  I think Rare will develop games for the DS, Microsoft wants to keep Sony from controlling the entire industry, because once it does, it will be too hard for Microsoft to control the entire industry.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Rare hasnt released a single good game since Star Fox Adventures, and even that was iffy.  I used to be a big fan of Rare and thought that when MS bought them it was really gonna suck... but I havent really felt like I missed out on anything.  Their last GREAT game was conkers bad fur day, and they are already remaking it

Rare is no more. Free Radical is made up of the people who made Rare great. Rare lost it's magic way before star fox adventures.

"it's not a remake"

The single-player mode sure is...It's the multiplayer that's being completely revamped...

It had a bunch of multiplayer modes.
They had teddez vs. french squirrels (kinda like nazis vs. the french).
They had a bank vault stage where everyone is a weasel and trying to steal loot (my favorite!).
They had deathmatch modes where everyone is given weapons and they duke it out.
There was also tank competition where the goal was to release something like mustard gas then get back to safety.
That's all I remember, but there could be more.

Rare is an amazingly talented group of people.  Their problen is it takes them five years to make game without nintendo being there saying hurry the F up.  People don't know this but conker was suppose to come out last year, I'm pretty sure around summer time, but rare hit some snags and decided to just not announce its release day. Trust me Rare will develop for the DS, and chances are they are developing now.  Microsoft doesn't want nintendo fanboy's getting happy about anything.  It would aslo be very stupid for them to annoucne support now when they won't put the game into full development until at least february or march of next year.  They're putting all of their effort into conker and its mister pants, more so conker than anything because that's their breadwinner.

Pretty much every Rare N64 game made extensive use of the analog stick.  We might get a bunch of ports but they're probably not going to be all that great.  Touchscreen analog control = teh suck.

I think Rare should stick to making original handheld games since that's pretty much the only thing they did right this last gen.

You'll never see Donkey Kong 64 again from Rare... as for myself, the only games I would like to see re-released on the DS there are Perfect Dark (unlikely) and Goldeneye (very unlikely)... although I would kill someone for a KI game on the DS. I want one where I can finally play both Raptor and Kim Wu, god damn it! I don't care if Raptor's dead, he was still bad ass.

I put ??? marks next to games that they made that I thought were unlikely(or not possible).

I also heard a rumor that Rare was playing around with PD on the DS and actually had (a) level(s) up & running.  Who to say they never continued on that project? If said rumor was true that is........

I think in the long run Rare might really show something.  I didn't really see Rare blast off on the NES, and on the SNES you got KI and DKC, and then the N64 is when they finally gunned us down with their games.

Personally other than the shooting games and even few others I don't think there was a Rare games that wasn't strongly influenced by a Nintendo games.  Rare's best bet are their shooting games, but when I look at Xbox 360 you're getting Perfect Dark, Quake, Halo, Ghost Recon, Half-Life, etc  Oh gosh where is the improvement?

I thought you didn't have a DS?  What's your basis for this opinion, hearsay?

Touchscreen analog control works suprisingly well.  Mario DS controls almost as well with the thumbstrap as it does with the analog stick.

I think its more like people just simply prefer a joystick feel or want more control, other than that I just simply have to shift my thumb in the direction the character wants to go.  Its like controling a mouse where you hit the scroll-button and you just push it a little bit up, down, left or right and it just moves.  It the closes thing to mouse and keyboard control.  I complain that up until now mouse and keyboard haven't been the norm for consoles.  They're great for FPS, Meteos, point and click, PC style games, etc

Joystick for FPS or in general moving some cursor = teh suck

Free Radical actually pulled the FPS control pretty good for the GCN control pretty well but its still not mouse and keyboard

hudsonhawk: No because it's impossible to judge where the center of the virtual analog stick is and therefore you're usually moving into some random direction instead of standing still when you try to center quickly.

Perfect Dark might actually have a steady framerate on the DS, that plus touchpad "mouselook" == potential megaseller. They might decide to make a new FPS instead but the DS is clearly the best platform for console FPSs.
