Remember that Spielberg got George Lucas syndrome with ET: he added horrible CG scenes that were absolutely unnecessary, and digitally removed the guns from the federal agents' hands to make it more family friendly. Such absolute bullcrap.

I can't justify giving George Lucas any more money at this point. He will needlessly retcon the series yet again, and probably add a bunch of superfluous crap that we don't need. The only way he could justify doing this is by retconning Episodes 1 and 2 out of the continuity and making new movies. Better movies. That he's not involved with. And digitally removing Hayden Christensen from Episode 3.

It's already been confirmed that all they will be doing is converting it to 3D, nothing will be changed or added.

I can understand the Episode II hate, but I like Episode I.

I love me some Star Wars, but I've seen them all way too many times to be excited about this.  I think I'll have to pass.

Does that mean they won't have the changes Lucas is making for the Bluray releases?

They are starting with Episode I in 2012, then releasing one a year (so Episode II in 2013, Episode III in 2014, IV in 2015, V in 2016, VI in 2017).
Wow, that seems like a long time. Why space them so far apart? They're already made, adding 3D can't take that long.

I think that was just a conservative estimate, I recall them saying that they may speed it up if they can get them done quicker. I guess they are converting them one at a time.

insano, I am not sure about the BD versions of the movies. I don't think they are gonna make any change, but don't quote me on that.

I heard the reason the Blu-Ray release is taking so long is because George Lucas is cutting Alec Guinness from the old trilogy and redoing all of Obi-Wan Kenobi's scenes with new footage of Ewan McGregor as older Obi-Wan spliced in. Vader vs. Obi-Wan in A New Hope is going to be badass. I can't wait.

I honestly can't tell if this is a joke.

It's a joke. I was thinking of making it more unbelievable but I thought I'd see if I could fool anyone because it kind of sounds like something Lucas might actually do...

Should I feel bad for being interested in this? I loved seeing it in theaters in the 90s, but I'd hate to wait a year inbetween. The prequels can go hang themselves in the gas station bathroom.

I'm quite content living in my bubble with my DVD versions of the original cuts of the original trilogy where I pretend that nothing has happened to Star Wars since 1983.  I wouldn't waste my money to see the prequels again and the special editions of the old films would just make me mad.  Why go to the theatre to get mad?  It's hard to think of a series that has gone more downhill than Star Wars.  You wonder how the George Lucas of today is the same man who used to **** gold when I was a kid.  It's like a pod person swap or something.

I've never seen a movie in 3D because it never appealed to me enough to do it (I don't see very many movies in theaters; at this point I seem to only do it once or twice a year), but I'll see these just for the chance to see Star Wars on the big screen again.

Looks like a new trilogy is planned to debut after the last 3D update is aired in the theaters.

Quote
George Lucas is plotting to create new Star Wars movies at the ultra top-secret Skywalker Ranch.

This is déjà vu of the mid 90's when Uncle George starting tweaking the Holy Trilogy to gear up for the Special Editions. That was his first step in moving forward with the eventual prequel trilogy.

It's happening all over again, Lucasfilm is already hard at work converting the entire Star Wars saga into 3D which will be released starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 2012. The word from our ultra top-secret Lucasfilm insider is that Lucas has gotten the itch and is already looking ahead into launching an entirely new trilogy in that galaxy far, far away.

What do we know? First of all, these new film will have nothing to do with the live action television series currently in development. That show already has over 50 scripts ready to go and plenty of pre-production time and money has been spent on artwork and storyboards. Once that show goes into production, Lucasfilm hopes to be able to produce at least 100 episodes since that is the threshold for syndication in the United States.

IESB has been told fans can expect the new trilogy after the entire saga is released in 3D which is expected to be complete around 2015 or 2016.

Uncle George's modus operandi has not changed, the plan is that he will self finance the new trilogy after he rakes in an expected $500 - $750 million dollars with the re-release of the entire Star Wars Saga in 3D and on Blu-Ray.

The ideal plan, according to our spy at Skywalker Ranch, is to be able to release a new Star Wars film within 24 months after the release of the last re-re-release (is that right?) of Return of the Jedi 3D.

Too early for story details but one thing that our source is certain about, they will not be prequels but instead sequels. It's not for certain if they will be the long awaited Episodes 7, 8 and 9 but could instead be Episodes 10, 11 and 12 or possibly even further out in the Star Wars timeline. And by giving space in the timeline, possibly even as far as 100 years or 1,000 years in the Star Wars universe future, Lucas avoids having to make these stories "fit in" with what the previous stories have told.

According to our sources, the most likely scenario for the films is that they will exist in the same universe but will not have anything to do with the Skywalker Clan. That story has been told, that starship has sailed.

What has caused this sudden change of heart for Uncle George? Well, besides the obvious possible billions that a new Star Wars trilogy will take in, our source tells us that George has gotten motivated with the success the Clone Wars animated series, the video games and also with the success of Avatar.

Can we expect Lucasfilm to confirm our story? Have they ever? Nope, I am sure that they will spin this or completly deny the story, but we will stand 100% behind our source.

Well, it's about time.  Back when the original Special Editions were releasing in Theaters, he was saying that he originally had 9 stories planned out.  When the prequels came out, suddenly he was swearing up and down that he only had 6 stories planned out.  Interesting to see him possibly retracting that.

Man, though, we'll never hear the end of the whining from the Expanded Universe people if the last trilogy becomes a reality, judging by their (if I remember correctly) reaction to the prequels.

If they set it so far in the future that even Han's kids kids are dead, then the bitching may subside a little bit.

Really though, they should just film the Thrawn trilogy and be done with it.

If they set it so far in the future that even Han's kids kids are dead, then the bitching may subside a little bit.

Too late. They have a new comic series that is "125 years after Return of the Jedi". It really turns a lot on it's head. But the way the novels are going will take it to the exact setting for this comic series.

(Massive spoiler ridden explanation of the setting connecting to the novels where they are right now)

It has a New Empire led by a Fel (implied to be Jagged Fel and Jaina Solo's descendant) who has a feisty and determined daughter. There are force users on all sides which is implied in the books right now by having Jagged suggest Jaina open a competing Jedi school in the Empire. The Sith that were mentioned in the Legacy of the Force series are now in power. The Galactic Alliance is a fringe player. The current Skywalker is Cade. I think he is the grandson of Ben Skywalker, Luke's boy. Cade's father is killed along with a ton of Jedi.

I know a lot of people say that the comics aren't cannon but these are very new so I really think they are being included in the cannon. Plus with the foreshadowing and plot setups currently happening (some I just mentioned above) corroborate it.

Really though, they should just film the Thrawn trilogy and be done with it.

I agree. I've debated a long time with a number of fellow fans and the majority consensus is that the Thrawn Trilogy is the best ones to go with. But we all know that Lucas will insist it being his own script and story. Though I believe that all of the novels could be converted into a continuous TV series. There is enough there to make it episodic and engaging. Plus it would help people unfamiliar with the Extended Universe catch up with everything that's happened so far. Every time I try to tell someone like my Dad who used to read the early EU stuff with the new events they get overloaded with knowledge. God forbid I try to tell a movies only fan. Start with Truce at Bakura (first one after RotJ if I recall) and just keep going along in chronological order. There is plenty they could cut to speed up the pace.

I always felt the X-Wing series would fit well in movie form.

An EU TV series isn't a bad idea. If they chop some of that overpowered Jedi over 9000! fan wankery, keep Lucas away with the 100 foot pole, I would watch it.
