I think I'm the only person in the world who really liked Doom 3.
DooM 3 started out great, but quickly became unbelievably boring. It was essentially just the original DooM with flashy blocky shadows everywhere. If I wanted that (and sometimes I do), I'd go play the original DooM. Having an Imp jump out of some suspiciously placed closet every corner was not scary, it was in fact very dumb. The game never pitted you against more than a few dumb enemies at a time, so it failed to be very action orientated. By the same stroke however, it also failed to take advantage of the setting in order to provide any real suspense, and thus failed to be any sort of horror-fest as well.
From what little has been spoken of RAGE thus far, it sounds as if it may just put Id back on the map. I wasn't particularly impressed with Unreal Tournament III (I was always a Quake guy anyway), but it seems the Unreal Engine is all you hear about nowadays and that is precisely because Id failed to deliver a decent game showing off their technology last time.
