Fable Commercial
« on: September 26, 2004, 02:00:22 PM »
I just saw one about two minutes ago.  Some guy on a subway sees someone take a wallet out of a woman's purse.  Some narrative guy talks, talking about decisions and crap, and the guy walks over and stops the pickpocketer.  It switches from that guy to some in-game shots.  Don't know if you can find it, for a better example, but tell me this isn't a pretty blatant rip-off of Nintendo's Who Are You? commercials.  I was thinking "Man, the Who Are You commercials have kinda gone downhill" as I was watching, and bam, it's Fable.  That, at least, was a relief.
I'm a pretty stern defender of creative ideas from every perspective, even the advertising edge, so I'm pissed.  But what do all of you think of this?

i actually liked how there's a second commercial that starts off the same, but instead the guy turns out the be the pickpocket and then it shows the in-game bad guy shots instead of the good guy shots.  i thought that was kinda clever.  otherwise, yeah, it was a fairly average commercial and doesn't really show off much about what the game is all about.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

It says "See, this game is just a sub-par RPG, but hey, you get to LOOK COOL if you're evil! Now that's a deal, isn't it"?

I'd say the resemblance to Nintendo's ads is coincidental.  After all, Fable's most unique feature is that you live out the hero's life however you want, going on an evil or good path.  It makes sense for the commercial to feature that, and it would be hard not to seem somewhat similar to the whole Who are you campaign...

I find the most innovative part is the flowing blood of the innocents that drips off my weapons. Wait, what was that about gta?

Ha ha...I heard the developers say that most people couldn't maintain an evil character for the whole game.  Is this forum filled with psychopaths, or what?

Dunno, I'd probably be rated as "good" (because I hate getting the attention of half the village, I already went through that in Fallout), but seriously, the ability to choose good or bad has been around since Dungeons & Dragons, many of the western computer RPGs (think D&D games, Fallout, etc) already allowed for that choice, so it's not even new for computer games. So the main feature of Fable is that your appearance changes.

Okay, Fable gets some points.  Turns out there are two commercials, one for good and one for bad.  Essentially the same situation for both, but different person being the pickpocket (some other guy, and the guy, good and evil respectively).

Still looks exactly for that Zelda commercial, for when they rereleased Lttp, though.  I realized it was more like that than the Who Are You commercials.

The biggest problem with fable is there's not enough good stuff out there to make you want to be good.  The game screams out go be evil.  Someone needs to make a morality game where its not sooo easy to be a bad guy.

"  I'd say the resemblance to Nintendo's ads is coincidental.  "

I wouldn't   The Xbox demo at GameStop has an ad that shows a family sitting down to play with their Xbox.  They are all bouncing, having a ball and the voice over talks about family fun.  The music playing during all this sounds just like the "island" music from Mario Sunshine.  It's a blatant rip off if you ask me.

Good point MaleficentOgre.  Theres really no real satisfaction in being good.

Actually you don't have to be evil the entire game or good for that matter, there's shines where you can donate money (one good and one of course bad) to get your status changed even at the end.

And you can get alot of evil points for just killing your wife if you bothered getting married.

Me, I was totally good and yeah there's little award for being good, or evil for that matter.

I'm going have to agree with KD for once, this game really was a disappointment.
