Just about every episode is funny(the 1st time through), but sometimes you have to watch them twice to catch(all) the jokes.

Save yourself the trouble. The second season sucks. The third is even worse. (By the way, this is coming from someone who thinks the first season has some of the greatest sitcome writing since the early days of Seinfeld.)

Hmm. Well, from what I've seen on the TV, the show has definetly gone downhill somewhat - but not as much as, say, Family Guy post-cancellation. It was an episode from the third season that turned me onto the show in the first place, after all. I think it's too early to say the show has jumped the shark.

...well, I guess they did do that gag with Henry Winkler jumping over a shark. But you know what I mean.

Arrested Development's shark episode is the one with Martin Short as Uncle Jack.

Arrested Development is the best show on the air, and has been since the day it first aired. It is absolutely outrageous that it is heading toward the grave while Stacked and The War At Home live. How is it that a show that won six emmy's in two years and an assload of other awards wasn't watched at all?

And how do you not like the Martin Short episode? It provided such hilarious quotes like, "Happy Valentines day, Nazi's!" and this funny exchange:

"I definitely said 'I'm afraid' in the jacuzzi." - Michael
"And I'm sorry for that Michael, I thought that was a pool toy." - Tobias

LAUGHAGE!

All people ever do is complain. AD has jumped the shark? LMAO. It's by far the best sitcom on TV. Perhaps every episode isn't as good as the first season (I defy you to actually compare them directly, your memory is probably different than you think) but that hardly means its gone crappy. Jumping the shark is when there is nothing left in a show and so thye start pulling ridiculous things out of nothing just grasping to straws. Watch last weeks episode and tell me that AD has jumped the shark, and I'll call you what you are: a big fat complaining liar.

Actually, my memory is pretty spot on.  I own the first season on DVD and I actually watched almost every episode over X-mas with a bunch of people who had never seen the show.  I still think that the first season episodes are considerably better than the second season episodes.  I haven't watched enough of the third season to judge it as a whole, but from the 3 or 4 episodes I've seen I'm not missing much.

The last episode was actually a whole episode parodizing the idea of jumping the shark (a character dying, 3D glasses moment, the narrator outright saying "Tell your friends about this show"), so I suspect that's about as close as they're going to get.

vudu - As I wrote earlier, do you then, by any chance, remember Good Grief, Afternoon Delight, The Immaculate Election, Meet the Veals, Righteous Brothers, Mr. F, Forget-Me-Now, and The Cabin Show? Because they were in the 2nd/3rd season, and they were just as good as the best of the 1st season..

I don't have the second season DVD so I'm not familiar with the episode names.

I'm not denying there were funny parts in every episode in the second season and there were a few truly excellent episodes.  But as a whole the quality has gone downhill.

I think my problem is that it's not that there aren't as many funny moments as just the quality of the writing has gone downhill.  There were many more first season episodes where the individual storylines coincided with each other at multiple times throughout the episode.  In the second season the storylines were more separated, usually only one influencing another, rather than the storylines interacting with all the others at multiple points during the episode.

I think part of that was due to the episode order being reduced. Who knows what they had planned for those four episodes that were killed off.

I very much liked the second season and the few episdoes of season three have made me laugh with consistency, but I may agree that season one was the best.

You know, I was thinking that vudu was wrong and the second and third seasons of Arrested Development weren't that bad. But then Desperate Housewives won the Golden Globe for best comedic TV series and Arrested Development wasn't even nominated, so I guess he was right after all. I hate the golden globes.

(In all seriousness, though, vudu, do you think your opinion of the 3rd season has been unfairly tainted by your impression of the second? I haven't really liked what I've seen of the 2nd season - tends to feel like they were trying too hard to be funny- but I've loved everything I've seen of the third. Especially that save-our-Bluths episode. And James Lipton's guest role.)

Rumor has it that it's highly likely Showtime will pick it up.  They've already offered a two year contract, and apparently something in the legal stuff with Fox declares that if Fox decreases the number of episodes per season (or something like that), it's up to the producers of the show as to what will happen.

Or something.  Anyway, it looks good.

It's hard to say.  Since it changed time slots I've had a hard time watching it on a regular basis.  I saw the first 2 or 3 episodes and the first two with Charlize Theron.  Besides the jingle For British eyes OOOoooOOOooonlyyyyyy... I didn't find anything that made me crack up too much.

I can't remember--when did they bring back Julia Louis-Dreyfus' character--the end of the second season or the beginning of the third?  I thought that whole thing was kind of stupid too.

While individual jokes are oftentimes still pretty good, the writing just isn't as clever as it used to be.

The 4 episode, 2 hour season finale was pretty good, great actually.

I like how they managed to actually bring the story to a closure, and start a new one up (in a round about way.)  If the show gets picked up on another station, great, I watch it there if possible.  But if it doesn't, then at least it went out with a proper ending.

How could they cancel this, the funniest show ever created?

Spectacular finale.  It seemed rushed, which of course it had to, but it was packed full.  A ton of incredible jokes, wonderful (and awkward) plot twists, and a whole lotta stuff for the fans of the show.
Not to mention what nitsu said: It brought it to a satisfying conclusion, but left it open enough to continue, if they choose to.
To be honest, though, I'd be perfectly content seeing some of the same people making a different show.

Nike supports saddam, eh?

Oh, I saw the finale (on the same time as the olympics opening ceremony? Great timing, Fox!). It was good. Rekindled my love of the series, actually. "I'm not going to make a mockery of this...." "mock trial? You were going to say mock trial, weren't you?" "I was in trouble about 3 words into that one."

Arrested Development is the perfect sitcom: it's hilarious and ridiculous while still being dry and intelligent... and it's characters are caricatures, yet you still feel like they're real people. (eat it, seinfeld) I hope it comes back. ...provided it doesn't then start sucking, ala Family Guy.

to be fair Family Guy had a rather long break b4 bein brought back, and was being developed next to another cartoon being done by the same people using alot of the same humor.

AD should hopefully pick up next season like it was never cancelled only on another network/channel.

The fate of AD lies entirely with Mitch Hurwitz. Showtime and ABC have both commited to it (Showtime has even offered 3 more seasons) and are willing to give just as good a deal as Fox has. The deal breaker, however, is Hurwitz. Without him they don't want the show. And judging from these four episodes, he's ended it on his terms.

The only bright side is that every station in town will want to produce his next idea.
