Podcast Discussion / Star Fox Adventures vs. Animal Crossing
« on: December 12, 2016, 01:07:00 AM »

Live from the NWR Telethon 2016, featuring special guest Daniel Bloodworth from Easy Allies!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/cubefight/43786/star-fox-adventures-vs-animal-crossing

In October 2016, NWR put on the 7th Annual Podcast Telethon for Charity, an event which featured a live edition of our monthly Gamecube Fightcast, Cube Fight.  In this episode, we pit Star Fox Adventures vs. Animal Crossing as we begin to wind down our first party games from 2002.

As always, each game is judged 0-10 on three categories:

  1. Legacy / Importance
  2. The Test of Time (How well does it hold up)
  3. The Fun Factor

Regardless of those three ratings, the two intrepid hosts will then reveal who they believe should move on in the tournament simultaneously. Will it be the mouse, or the plumber? Tune in to find out!

Look for new episodes of Cube Fight at the incredible pace of once per month.  We'll see you in the new year.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 436: Federation Farce

The way that Mr. Bloodworth is describing Witcher 3 is... really turning me off. I like my games to feel gamey, I have learned in my experiences with gaming that level design is something that arrests me, and that I can suspend my disbelief far more and remember the games SO much more vividly if i still have that mental map I can dust off when I revisit the game in my mind. It's a big reason I'm down on stuff like GTA, Goldeneye, and most importantly, any video game that Bethesda Softworks has ever made in the history of ever.

Bloodborne's level design is so rich, so lovingly crafted and etched into my mind the same way that Dark Souls 1 or a Castlevania game or Super Metroid is bored into my very concience. I can tell you where you're going to find things in games like that, and what the implications of finding said things are. I cannot tell you where you are going to find a copy of the Lusty Argonian Maid or your particular powerful piece of equipment that isn't afforded to you outside of like... a quest in Skyrim is.

I get where you're coming from. Maybe it's harder to explain since so many open worlds do feel rather cookie cutter, but with the Witcher, it still does have that sense of feeling very intricately and lovingly crafted, but also convincing you that it's a real place rather than a level design. There are so many memorable places as you work your way through the game, and even after I was 80 hours in, there were spots that would catch me off guard with their beauty and craftsmanship.

I can believe that. I'll probably hit up this trology some day. I have the second game on Steam, but not the first. I've just got to be not lazy. I really haven't played a wesern RPG I've really loved in a LONG time
I'd suggest skipping straight to 3. Since 3 is the company's first multiplatform title, they went out of their way to make sure the plot is as easy to jump into as possible. There will certainly be things you'd be better informed of if you played the previous games and read the books, but that's true of the first two games as well.

Yo, sorry I haven't been around much. Wasn't sure if people really still wanted to see all my craziness. Yeah I did the review for inFAMOUS, and I actually ended up playing it three times - good, evil, and hard - to get the platinum. My first platinum ever. We got a shout out from Sony at their press conference for our review too, which was cool. Anyways, I'll post the link to my inFAMOUS review in case you guys haven't seen it yet, and I've also got a massive pile of stuff from E3 here too.

heh heh yeah. Sometimes when you're capturing footage, you're not always as focused. Plus, if all you show are perfect runs, the games don't look that hard. It can go both ways.

Bioshock 2, Rapture Revealed Interview
This one's a little weird. I wasn't asking most of the questions, but I was there and tossed in a few. Also, since the lead interviewer was out this week, I helped produce the cut. In any case, it's still a cool interview, and it was great to get a first look at the game in action.

Yeah, people hear a different voice and they get all bent out of shape for whatever reason. Brandon was on vacation so Daniel Kayser voiced a couple pieces. Happens a couple times each year. Not a big deal, but then everyone acts like the "new reviewer" doesn't know what he's talking about or something.

Ugh, online has almost killed multiplayer for me. I honestly feel like local and LAN play are way more fun, and it actually seemed easier to get together with people back before all the big games were online too. I'll have to see if Eric's willing to say anything more the next time I talk to him.
