General Chat / strategy guides - do or don't?

just bought beyond good & evil yesterday for the $19.99 price, and i saw the strategy guide there as well for $14.99. i didn't buy it, because i kind of think it's cheating to just do everything that the book says. when i get stuck on games i'll seek out the solution, but i've never bought a strategy guide before. does anyone else buy them or stay away from them? people must buy them because they sell them for a lot of games. thanks for your input!

haven't played this game (yet), but my brother is, and he's stuck as to where he can find the 2nd hammer (hammer brother?). he asked me to find out for him, so any help would be appreciated. thanks a lot!
