Nintendo Gaming / the gameboy to gamecube scam
« on: April 05, 2003, 09:25:32 AM »
Strell has the best signature in the world.  That's all I have to say.

Now could we all stop arguing about arguing?

Oh... here we go with the "magic" again...
I agree, I liked Mario 64 better than Banjo, but not that much better.

And yes, I did convieniently forget to mention what you said before.  Actually, it wasn't all that convenient, because if I had realized that was what you meant then I wouldn't have had to write a responce :-)  I mean, I definately wish they hadn't left, but I don't care about games being online, and I don't play games like PD and Conker anyway.  Well, sorry I misunderstood.  I'm normally not the one to do that kind of thing.

Nintendo Gaming / What happened to the overworld theme?(^Spoilers^)
« on: April 04, 2003, 03:01:48 PM »
I love the WW overworld theme because it's a totally new piece of music and yet it sounds so "Zelda-ish" because it uses some of the note arrangements of both the overworld theme in the original games and Oot. (And it just sounds like "sailing"!)  I mean, Oot's theme did the same thing; it took some stuff from previous Zelda music and mixed it together into what I thought-- and still think-- is the best piece of music from a video game in all of history! :-)

But let's not start arguing about it too much...

Nintendo Gaming / One Problem with Wind Waker

"In my opinion, it wasn't as obvious in SM64. Maybe I should let this go..."

Yeah, that's because it wasn't there.  Zelda: WW is pretty much the first game to use it during gameplay itself.  Please don't take that like I'm trying to sound real smart or something, but it's true.

::whines::  But I don't WANNA use the telescope!!!!!! ::cease whining::

Haha...  Seriously though, it is kind of annoying to have to use the telescope just to look at something in the distance clearly.  And the telescope doesn't then blur the things in the forground like it should if it were imitating real life.  I mean, you have to assign it to a button and then push the button, and even then it doesn't fill the whole screen.  What I'm trying to say is I wish it wouldn't always focus on the foreground.  But I'm hoping that you skimmed my previous posts at least enough to know that's what I'm trying to say.

Anyways, I don't care about it anymore.  It's not that bad.  I hope it doesn't sound like I'm really complaining anymore, just trying to defend my intelligence.  But go ahead, insult it if you want... :-)

Well, I mean, that's what these forums are here for... to discuss stuff.  So if thecubedcanuck had just said what he said and we all said "Oh that's very good for you.  Nice opinion!"  then there wouldn't be much point in his post in the first place.  Obviously he wanted to discuss the issue, which inevitably is going to bring up controversy.

Personally, I say, who cares?  This reminds me of a debate in Nintendo Power a long time ago where a bunch of people were saying something about Nintendo limiting their fun in Goldeneye because they weren't good enough to get to the next level.  I mean, you knew you couldn't access the Game Boy Advance features when you bought the GameCube game, right?  So, It's not like they're trying to trick you or anything.  What you spent that $50 on was what you could access in the game without the Game Boy Advance.  I mean, would you rather they just not put it in?  They'd still be charging the same price for the game whether there were extras or not.  Just look at it that way.  And enough uncivilized arguing.  Sheesh.  If you still think it's unfair, then so be it.

Ahh... But did  you notice that when the camera looks right at the audience they are in perfect focus?
Again, I don't hate the effect anymore, but I don't like it because you can't switch focus.  A game show on TV isn't interactive, but a video game is.  A cut scene in a video game isn't interactive either, so I don't mind the effect at all in a cut scene.  But the effect in Zelda is based solely on distance, not your personal eye focus.  But hey?  It brings up the question of what video games are trying to imitate.  Real human vision? A camera lense?  Looking through only one eye?  Looking through two eyes?  It's really confusing and I don't claim to understand it all.  That's why I think they should have stayed away from it all together.  But hey, I think I'll just stop whining and go play Wind Waker now :-)

Okay yrrab436, I'm sorry.  I didn't know anybody really liked DK64 :-)  Well, I liked the beginning, but it just seemed to get very boring because of all the backtracking and things you had to collect.  I'm sure that there are some people who like that, although I hate it.  I guess you're one of those people.  I was just saying that to make a point in my last post since there are a lot of people who don't like DK64 in comparison to BK and Mario64.  I take it back.

Don't be depressed :-)

Thank you VideoGamerX for keeping me from sounding like an idiot :-)
Anyways, I'm over the "little thing that bothers me" about Wind Waker.  For some reason the blur effect isn't bothering me for the most part anymore.  It looks good most of the time, especially when there's something big close to you, but still looks a little weird when you're just looking off into the distance.  Oh well, it's not keeping me from enjoying the game or anything.  I love this game so much.  Definately the best out of Nintendo (EAD) since.... well, Ocarina of Time!  Anyway, I guess I'm done complaining.  My point still stands though; you should be able to pick what you want to focus on in an interactive video game.

I did go have a look for myself :-)  Just a few days ago.  Sure, it looks blurry about a mile away, or if your near-sighted...  But seriously, things are only blurry far away if there's something in the air, and there must be a LOT in the air in Zelda, because the blur is really close to the camera.  Honestly, I'm finally getting used to the blur effect.  I don't really like it when your on the sea or on land in the daytime, but it's okay at nightime, and I think it's well done indoors.  I still think it's too extreme. I'm not totally against it, but I would have rather they didn't use it for the reasons I've stated before.  The thing is that it's kind of hard to tell exactly what Nintendo wants it to be-- focus or distance or what.  In Mario Sunshine it's supposed to be the heat.  What I do know is that most people who see it immediately think it's bad graphics.  I don't know.  I don't like it a lot of the time, but I am getting used to it and agree that it is appropriate in some places.  What I really want to see is the game running in hi-resolution on a wide-screen plasma HDTV.  I'm sure that the effect makes more sense and looks better on one of those.  There are probably less jagged edges, something that the blur effect seems to enhance.  Say, does anybody here have one of those HDTVs along with the special video cable?  How's it look?

Well, maybe your eyes don't blur things in the background of a video game naturally, but they do put out of focus things you're not focusing on.  The eyes' focal point is a very small area that does not cover an entire screen.  I want to make this as clear as possible.  YOU CANNOT CHOOSE WHERE YOU WANT TO FOCUS WHEN THE VIDEO GAME VOCUSES FOR YOU.  I want to be able to look into the distance and see things clearly, just like I can do while I'm driving down the road.  Until they make a game that can READ YOUR MIND and focus on whatever your focusing on (The foreground OR the background) and blur everything else, I don't want to see depth of field blur anywhere near as drastic as it is in the Wind Waker.  It is not realistic when you're eyes are looking at something in the distance and yet the object in focus is Link himself.  It is not possible when you're playing a game to be focusing on everything on the screen at once.  Trust me, I've tried it.  Go have a look for yourself if you wish.

Just because a game has the same set up as another does not mean one can't be better than the other.  You have to take into account feeling, sound, graphics, atmosphere, control, and world design.  I love both Mario 64 and BK, and BK2 as well, but I do like Mario 64 better than the both of them.  I didn't really notice the BK2 frame rate problems because everything on the N64, except F-zeroX had slow frame rates.  I was used to it.  I mean, DK64 used the same system as BK and Mario, but you can't say that BK and Mario weren't better than DK!

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda Gamecube game after Windwaker?
« on: April 01, 2003, 10:16:29 AM »
I love the whole sailing thing.  I've always thought that would be such a cool idea to have in a video game.  I don't mind the time it takes since the advantage is how incredibly huge the world feels.  It's just so sweet to sail around.  I guess that's because I like boating so much :-)  It really makes the whole thing feel like one big planet.  Like a real place.  There are no walls hiding the end of the world or places where you could just fall off the map.  It's a world unto itself.  Incredible.  I don't really care if they do it again or not, although I'd like to see it all with realistic graphics.  Not that I don't like the cell shading, I think it's really cool too.  I don't think they'll do the sailing thing again because Myamoto likes to do something different each time.

I hated it...
Actually, I would have LOVED it, but the time thing was my idea of a complete nightmare.  It totally ruined it for me.  It was wicked hard and I just stopped playing it.  A huge dissappointment for me.  I like to take my time and look around explore.  I hated the pressure of having to rush through things and backtrack through a whole stinking dungeon if I took too long.  I hope they never do that time thing again or I just won't bother buying the game :-(

The thing is that your eyes do that to an extent when you're playing a video game anyways without them putting in any effect.  The difference is that with the effect you CAN'T CHOOSE where you want to focus.  And when I'm playing a game, I'm not looking at the character, I'm looking at what's in front of me and off into the distance.  Whenever there's something big in front of you in the game it looks okay, but when you're just staring out into a big blur it really annoys me.  It's very limiting.  It's fine in cut scenes.  Sure, there are cartoons that use the effect, but I don't want to see it in my video game.  I mean, go outside and stare down the street.  Do you see a blur in the distance? (Or should I say 10 feet in front of you?) No.  Not unless it's foggy out.  I think that makes my point.

In responce to "who ever said the game was cell-shaded?"  The answer would be Nintendo.  The difference between zelda and those other cell shaded games is that Zelda does not draw lines around the edges of objects to make things look more hand-drawn.  I think the reason the game doesn't look cel shaded after a while is because you just get used to it.  If you went back to a realistic look you'd see the difference again.  The game is definately cell shaded.  There is no doubt.  Cell-shading is a graphical technique that is easily distinguishable.

Nintendo Gaming / Games with "hidden" loading times
« on: April 01, 2003, 09:36:41 AM »
The doors in Luigi are load times, actually.  If you open up the GCN cover the game will play fine until you try to walk into another room.  Then it asks you to shut the lid.  I mean, where else would it load?

I love exploration-- And I think SFA had plenty of it!  Not as much as Zelda, but I still felt like I was exploring a big world nontheless.  And there's no reason to be happy that Rare left.  I mean, you might not care, but to say your happy just doesn't make much sense.  You don't need to play their games if you don't want to.  Plus, I don't believe Rare really had that much of a choice about leaving.  I mean, I don't think most of them cared either way.  They got offered the money and Nintendo didn't offer anything higher.  It's as simple as that.

Nintendo Gaming / help my gamecube says error has occured!
« on: March 31, 2003, 12:11:31 PM »
Well, I don't think it happens to all the systems---- It hasn't happened to mine, which I bought on launch day.  If there is a widespread defect, I would think we would have heard more about it.  If there is, it's Panasonic's fault.

Nintendo Gaming / Games with "hidden" loading times
« on: March 31, 2003, 12:00:36 PM »
Luigi's Mansion is extremely quick, and actually, a lot of Zelda's load times are hidden as well.  While you're sailing the disc is loading the areas you're approaching.  Actually, a lot GameCube games have hidden loads.  Mario Sunshine is pretty quick too.

Oh... I consider that a relief actually.  I hate it when you think you're aimed perfectly and something hits right into you and kills you.  Anyways, the blur isn't a mistake or a problem with the system or a limitation of the system.  It's an effect just like any other.  It just happens to be a very annoying one that I think is distracting and limiting.  Nintendo used it in Mario Sunshine too, it was just a lot further in the distance.  I wasn't even a big fan of it back then--- Now I really hate it!

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda Gamecube game after Windwaker?
« on: March 31, 2003, 09:40:17 AM »
Well, let's not get too into the cel-shading thing here...  I love it.  But I don't think they should use it all the time.  Either way I don't really care, but I just like to see some variety.  I heard that Myamoto said that the next Zelda would be realistic and they would be using the spaceworld models.  In fact, I think that was on PGC a little while back.

Nintendo power said something about the chanting in the background being removed because it closely resembled some other chant and they didn't want to get in copyright trouble or something.  They said it was a coincidence.

"I think overwhelmingly the negative opinion of game stems from the fact that those elements don't gel into something compelling. It's not enough that a game is technically brilliant or has the exact same elements of another classic/Triple A game. There has be something there that keeps you going, like a amazing tale, engaging characters, or a brilliantly realized world."

What I'm trying to say is that I think SFA has all of that and that it DOES gel into something compelling.  I guess I'm not really as mad at most of you guys as I am at PGC for their reviews and especially that "Biggest Dissapointment of 2002" award.  I knew that was coming even before I clicked the link...  I just think that some people really honestly did write off the game because of the whole Rare break-up (I know most people will deny it) combined with the fact that they just didn't want to see Fox as the star of an adventure game. (The whole primative environment thing doesn't bother me at all-- It makes sense in my mind.) I think a lot of people also lost interest because of how long it took for the game to come out.  I can see why you would write off my "not-made-by-Myamoto" comment, but I really think it's true.  The reason being Mario Sunshine in particular.  If Rare made that game then nobody would even care about it.  If its main character wasn't Mario than it wouldn't get any more publicity than every other platformer.  I bought the game and played it until I just got bored.  It was kind of like Donkey Kong 64, only more enjoyable, I will admit :-)  Mario had TERRIBLE presentation and did not gel into a very enjoyable experience for me.  It seemed very bland-- Yet PGC gave it crazy good scores.  And StarFox didn't even get the stinkin' best graphics award at PGC, obviously because of their dislike of the game itself for some reason.  They rant and rave about Zelda and even MARIO's graphics, but they just say, "Sure, I guess Starfox's graphics are good, but the game is terrible..." AAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!
Okay, I'm okay...  I still don't think the whole "It's just not good" thing works for me.  I love the game and I just want someone to know that there is someone out there who does.  And I'll also tell you that everybody I've showed the game to or who I personally know who ownes the game also loves it.  And those people don't even know who the heck Myamoto, EAD, or Rare is!  So please guys, throw away your pre-concieved notions and all your Nintendo bias (Or Myamoto bias, I should say) and just play the game.  I understand that not everyone can like the game, but they should at least recognize it's strengths and not give all that junk about how it doesn't have "Nintendo Magic."  When I think of that phrase, StarFox Adventures is actually one of the games that comes to mind.
Okay.  I'm done.

25
Okay. I've had enough.  I went into StarFox thinking it wouldn't be that great (Reading all the reviews) and I LOVED it.  It's much more polished and cinematic than most games made by EAD.  I'm sick of the StarFox bashing.  It was the best game I'd played since Ocarina of Time. Period.  The graphics and gameplay are extremely solid.  I never wanted to stop playing at any point in the game and the story was very interesting.  The game isn't exactly like Zelda, which is a good thing.  It shouldn't be exactly the same!  I think it's definately Rare at its best and it was a total blast to play.  There was nothing that bothered me about it like most games do.  But I guess I'm just weird.  I like more adventure segments with less dungeons and I don't really care how easy a game is.  I loved it.  I guess I can't stress that enough.  Just because EAD didn't make it doesn't mean it can't be just as good or better than something they make, and it was certainly leaps and bounds better than what we've seen coming out of there recently (Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine).  That is, up until the Wind Waker, which is simply awesome (except for that darn depth-of-field blurring)...  Not to say I didn't enjoy EAD's latest stuff, but it didn't live up to the hype.  I really liked seeing StarFox out of his ship and thought it was an awesome idea.  Seriously, flight combat games are kind of predictable...
