General-3 / Oh, hello.
« on: February 01, 2013, 01:55:58 AM »
Pleased to meet you. Name's Francis Pumphandle, but everyone calls me 'Pip'.  Cheese balls are one of my all-time favorite foods.  I always seem to meet the most interesting people when I'm around them, too.  In fact, cheese balls bring to mind the time I met Bob Barker.  Yes, indeed.  Bob Barker.  Star of the most popular morning game show.  He's a host, an emcee, and a celebrity, all rolled into one.  Anyway, eight months ago -- it was Tuesday the seventeenth, I believe -- or it might have been the eighteenth...no, no, it was definitely the 17th, because it was precisely one week after my aunt Lucretia's birthday, which is the tenth.  Aunt Lucretia's quite a woman.  Loves to cook.  She prepares a fabulous war shu a.  That's a Chinese duck dish.  I love Chinese food.  I once went to a party where they served Chinese food and cheese balls.  Now that was a Catch-22 situation.  "Catch-22" was a movie, you know.  It was long, very long.  They say the book was better, but it was a novel and I never finish reading those things.  Of course, a lot of people don't read much nowadays. They watch television.  I caught a program on PBS last night.  A very good show on chimpanzees in the media.  They had a clip of J. Fred Muggs, that chimp the TODAY show.  But it was Fred's girlfriend that had me stumped.  I couldn't remember her name, so I looked it up.  Her name was Phoebe B. Beebee.  Anyway, as I was saying, eight months ago, Tuesday the seventeenth, I went downtown on a nice, relaxing stroll.  I love to relax.  In fact, relaxing is a pastime of mine.  Some people play golf.  Others like tennis, horseshoes, bridge, canasta, and other such fancy hobbies.  Now, another hobby enjoyed by many is knitting.  My grandmother was a great knitter.  Knitted this sweater I'm wearing.  It's red, which is not my favorite color.  I prefer mauve or mustard yellow.  Now, don't get me wrong: red is okay for ties and suspenders, but with sweaters I prefer more neutral colors.  But when I'm relaxing, I don't care what I wear: long pants, Bermuda shorts, T-shirts, or formal attire.  You name it, anything goes.  Now, on the seventeenth, during my relaxing stroll, I recall wearing my herringbone jacket, my Laughlin, Nevada souvenir tie, and my charcoal gray slacks.  Or was it the navy slacks?  Oh, I suppose it doesn't really matter, does it?  What matters is comfort.  You know, I once stayed at a Comfort Inn.  Warm, cozy, comfortable.  I love comfort.  It goes along with that pastime of mine, relaxing.  Now, for me, there is nothing more relaxing than a nice leisurely stroll, like the one I took eight months ago on the 17th.  It was a bright, sunny day which of course is the optimum condition for relaxed strolling.  And as I walked along, I found myself humming a haunting melody.   I kept humming and humming and humming and humming.  I couldn't get the tune out of my head.   I racked my brains to come up with the title, but to no avail.  You see, I'm not terribly musical.  And yet, I'd always wanted to play an instrument and be like my musical hero, Leo Sayer. But who can compete with Leo?  I think I was just scared that I'd fail.  Well, I decided right then and there to go buy a musical instrument.  So on the particular Tuesday the seventeenth to which I was referring, I went down to the Sixth Street Music Emporium to buy a new tambourine, a terribly soothing instrument, contrary to popular opinion.  And as I was strolling along, I detected a wonderful scent in the morning air.  "What could it be?" I asked myself.  So I went toward that marvelous scent, distracted by its aroma from my musical mission.  The odor was a mix of orchid flowers and bologna, which of course is one of the world's most under-appreciated luncheon meats.  That and pimento loaf.  I love a good pimento loaf and mayo sandwich - the more pimentos, the better.  Why, just the mention of pimentos makes my taste buds stand up and say, "Howdy."  Now there's an interesting word: "Howdy."  Is it from "How are you" or maybe "How you doing"?  "Howdy"'s one of those strange words that really has no origin.  I like saying "How do" more than "Howdy" - more formal, I think.  Not too flowery.  But the flowery aroma of that particular Tuesday morning carried me on my fragrant quest.  Now, the smell was actually less bologna and more orchid - the beautiful flower found on the island state of Hawaii.  Of course, I wasn't in Hawaii, so I needed to search out the location of the nearest orchid.  So, I visited every florist's shop in town. Well, to make a long story short, not a single flower shop in town had _any_ orchids in stock, which seemed mighty curious to me.  Now, as we all know, curiosity killed the cat, but since I'm not a feline, I wasn't too worried.  Felines are funny creatures, don't you think?  I had a cat once.  It used its claws to tear my living room couch to shreds.  It was a comfy couch, too.  Had a sleep-away bed in it with a foam rubber mattress.  Now, I bought the couch and the mattress at Levine's Department Store on Third Avenue, the very same afternoon of that relaxing stroll aforementioned.  I also bought myself a lovely tambourine on that same shopping expedition.   Anyway, I didn't want to pay extra for the delivery of the couch, so I decided to carry the couch home myself.  It was quite cumbersome.   And getting it through the store's revolving doors was a bit of a challenge.   And just as I emerged onto the street, by accident I bumped into a well-dressed man with an orchid in his lapel.  It was Bob Barker and he was eating a bologna and cheese balls sandwich.

Well, it's been nice chatting with you.

General-3 / Geesh, I'm so ******* old...
« on: January 02, 2013, 12:52:57 AM »
I felt old when I saw a preview for the re-release of Jurassic Park and it advertised that it was the 20th anniversary...

While watching Batman: The Animated Series, an ad for War Games came on.

There's a big, booming voice... "There was a time when computers connected through the phone..."

Wow.

Who knew that technology I grew up with would already be so outdated that it's now referenced as a mythical concept.

But for kicks, the ad goes on... "When Internet security was easy to hack..."
Heh.

I guess some things never change.

And yes, I know, computers still regularly connect via phone lines.  Hell, I often use my cell to connect my laptop... I guess The HUB doesn't know this.

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS Hacking
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:05:01 AM »
For those not in the know, over the weekend, an individual hacker has brought forth claims that he's managed to get unsigned code to run on the 3DS.  This could open the door for homebrew, region unlocking and, yes, piracy.

Today, my twitter feed popped up with an interesting article/rant by the creator of the wonderful game Mutant Mudds.

http://t.co/Ry0RqVNv

In this article/rant, Jools says that if the 3DS is opened to piracy, he might consider dropping development for the 3DS.

As Jools tweeted "The number of people justifying illegal activity on the 3DS is astonishing. The comments section is a fun read"

Meanwhile, Mutant Mudds - a wonderful game (did I say that already) is available to download on the (currently) piracy-free 3DS eShop for $9.

Or on the iOS platform, where there is plenty of Piracy, for a mere ninety-nine cents.

Or straight from Renegade Kid's website as a PC download for $4.99.  No piracy on the PC, right?

So, here's the rubbbbbbbb... Why would a developer come out and trash the 3DS platform based on the *possibility* of piracy all while sabotaging their releases on that platform by re-releasing the game (at a fraction of the cost) on other, competing platforms that already suffer from piracy?

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS Hard Locks?
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:08:26 AM »
Am I the only one who's been getting several 3DS Hard Locks of late?  I'll wake my 3DS from sleep mode and it'll... not wake up.  I have to hold down the power button to reset it.

Perhaps I've been cursed by the gods and this is the price I pay in exchange for not having my Wii U lock up at all?

Aside from making us give them more money, why do studios bundle so many Blu-Ray discs with the DVDs?  It's even worse with 3D Blu-Rays - there are so few that come with just the 3D disc.  Why the heck do I want the DVD if I have a Blu-Ray player?

Grr.

Nintendo Gaming / Wii Sensor Bar that Powers via USB?
« on: November 13, 2012, 12:16:01 PM »
Has anyone seen a Wii Sensor Bar that powers itself via USB?  I've seen some wireless ones that recharge via USB, but the ones I've seen need to be turned on - I want one that's always on so long as there's power via USB.

Thoughts?

In my continued series of threads where I post letters to Nintendo that they'll never see but I like to pretend they do, I would like to start off with this photo.

So, I've gotten this new TV.  Officially, it's because the TV is awesome.  Unofficially, I had planned on spending this week redoing my entertainment set-up in anticipation of finding a place for my forthcoming Wii U (only one penny left to pay on it!).  Since I was doing it all anyway and our old TV is acting up, seemed like a good time to buy a new one.

So, here I am after the first step.  Everything is disconnected and here's the pile of cables left over.

This is what you've made my life, Nintendo.

My wife, who's never really been involved with this process before (but she wanted to help so we could get the TV up and running.  By the way, it's running, but it's not up yet.) is such a sweet heart.  She got to do a bunch of the untangling.  How come, no matter how much effort I put into making all the cables look nice and run cleanly, whenever I take it all down, I end up with something that looks like Tangela?

Anyway, back to my wife.  You know the TV show Hoarders?  Sometimes, they bring in family members who haven't been in the house (or haven't been in it in a long time) and they have this look of complete disbelief on their faces because they just never realized?

Yeah.

Anyway - she has to run to Evansville for some catering stuff and I had to send her to Best Buy for another cable.  This TV has a pretty silly cable situation.  If you're mounting it flush to the wall, the regular component/composite ports are pretty much useless.  The jacks stick out too far and such.  Sadface.  There are some "mini-jacks" on the bottom that you can use, but I only have one mini-jack-to-RCA adapter and I need two.

Next up, once I get the basic cables plugged into the TV and it's hanging, I plan to move all of my components back into the room make another photo.  We're also getting another media component center that should work well to set under the TV (the other two I have are towers that will plank the TV on each side).  I think that'll be spectacular for getting it all going.

General Chat / Weird TV Mount question no one will know the answer to.
« on: November 11, 2012, 04:06:17 AM »
I bought my 37" flat panel TV in 2006-ish at Best Buy.  I got a wall mount that ran over $200 (the cheaper one didn't fit my TV).  The old TV weighs 58.4 lbs.

So, I got this new TV.  Bought a wall mount for it - was $130.  Says it fits 37"-84" TVs.

I had this brilliant idea - if I could use my old wall mount for the new TV, it would save me a LOT of time and trouble.

But I don't know the weight restriction on this old wall mount.  Though, to be honest, I'm picking up the TV tomorrow, so I don't even know if the mount will physically fit the new TV.

As far as the bracket in the wall goes, it'll hold.  When I first mounted it, I actually clung onto it and put my feet onto the wall, with the bracket holding my entire weight - which is quite a bit more than the 92.6 lbs the new TV weighs.  I'm just not sure if the half that mounts into the TV would hold.  I don't see why not, but... I'd be really sad if the TV fell off the wall.

So... any ideas?  I was thinking about calling the Best Buy I bought the TV at years ago, but I'm sure there's no way in heck they'll be able to look up the order... although, if I could just get the UPC, I could probably find it online...

General Gaming / My Skylanders Adventure...
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:20:33 PM »
So, I bought some Skylanders today...

My Skylanders Giants adventure actually started awhile ago when Toys R Us put the new Battle Pack (Chop Chop, Shroomboom and the Cannon battle piece) up for order on their website... then shipped the order!  I've had it for awhile now, but nothing to do with it. :D

As for today... It was a fun day.  I got up super early so I could get showed and dressed and make the hour drive to get to Toys R Us before they opened.  And my awesome wife went with me - I had a special mission for her. :D

In spite of previous dealings with Toys R Us, I chose them because A) My local-ish TRU actually rocks and B) They had Buy One, Get One 40% off *and* they tempted me by mailing me a coupon for an additional 25% off my entire purchase.  Oh, and I had a $5 rewards coupon.

We pulled onto the lot at about 7 o'clock.  Some employee cars were there along with one other vehicle with someone in it.  My wife wanted something to snack on, so I drove over to the Panera Bread, then came back.  The occupants of the other vehicle had now moved to the door - turns out it was a guy and his son who were also there for a previous Skylanders release (I believe it was the Zook assortment).  At about 7:30, I was still in my car with my wife and we were the only ones there... I went ahead and sent my wife on to Target to complete her mission - Picking me up a Granite Crusher.  I armed her with a copy of the Target flyer so she'd know what she was looking for. :D

I went up to the door and made some small talk with the other guy - by the time the store opened at 8, there was a crowd of about 15-20 people.  We made our way to the huge Skylanders Giants display towards the front of the store.  Although I was second in line, my politeness ended up with several people between me and the loot - I managed to grab a Legendary Bouncer and a Flashwing.... Grabbed that one because I didn't even know it was out yet.  Weird.

I stepped away and realized... I bet they have some of these over by the video games too... and NO ONE was going that way.  So, I made my way over there, where I was given free roam of the entire counter. :D  At this point, I noticed they had an additional Giant, an additional Light Core and several singles - all of which I didn't know was out yet.  By the time I had mostly finished picking through the figures, the guy I was waiting with and a few others had made their way over into my space... and I had no cart!  Curse me and my lack of foresight!  Lucky for me, other guy had a cart and allowed me to use the top basket in his cart while I went and got my own.  Then, the two of us started the process of comparing figures to make sure we both got everything.

Total, I had:
Giants
Swarm
Crusher
Hot Head
Bouncer
Legendary Bouncer

Light Cores
Prism Break
Drobot
Jet-Vac
Euptorr

3-Packs
Pop Fizz, Whirlwind, Trigger Happy
Ignitor, Chill, Zook

Singles
Sonic Boom
Gill Grunt
Flameslinger
Flashwing
Hex
Sprocket
Bash
Drill Sergeant
Double Trouble
Stump Smash

Also, I grabbed two of the Legendary 3-Packs - but this is where the issue came up.  A few weeks ago, TRU had a thing where you could put a deposit down and "Pre-order" items from their "Hot Toy List" - I put two of these on pre-order, one for me, one for a co-worker.  When I got to the counter, I mentioned it and the lady said they hadn't put any aside (ick), but that I could just get those... however, she wouldn't be able to ring them up with everything else - so I wouldn't get the extra 25% off on them.  Oh well, no biggie.  But then, she couldn't get the system to give me my 40% off the second figure because it was a pre-order.  After trying a few things, I suggested we just ring everything up together and I go up front to get a refund on the pre-order.  That was fine.  I checked out, saved something like $150, then went back to the service desk to get my $10... which, between me and the customer in front of me (who was having a similar problem with her pre-order on the games), was just a giant nightmare that took us up until 9:30 to resolve.  Fun times.

By this time, my wife had returned, wondered what the hold up was and came in to make sure I didn't get trampled or something.  She was successful in her mission with no issues.  If only I could say the same... about Toys R Us or the rest of my day.

Speaking of the games, you'll notice I haven't yet purchased them.  Knowing that Walmart had the superior version of the bundle (with cool glow-in-the-dark figures packed in), I went there.  First, I looked at their figures... because I *knew* Toys R Us was missing some.  Sure enough, I found the new Slam Bamn and Fright Rider.  Grabbed those off the shelf, then got someone to open the cases and get me the Wii and 3DS versions out.  As we got to the check out, I explained that Toys R Us had the two bundles in their ad for $74.99 *and* Buy One, Get One 40% off and that I wanted to price match.  Cashier said "No, we don't price match percents off."  "You do if the original price is shown in the ad."  "No, we don't." "Manager Please".

Waited for a manager.  She came.  Told her I wanted to price match.  "No, We don't price match percents off."

::face palm::

Let me assure you, as long as the original price is shown in the ad, Walmart policy is to price match percents off.  This lady wouldn't budge.  So, I thanked her and made a phone call.  Mystery person on the other end of the phone suggested I pull up Walmart's price match policy directly from their website...

http://corporate.walmart.com/ad-match-guarantee

Now, here's the thing... the policy doesn't specify that we'd match something that's BOGO 40% off.  But it does say:

Quote
We gladly match the price in the following types of ads:*   Buy      one, get one free ads with a specified price
  • Example:       Buy one for $2.49, get one free (BOGO)

Which is what I was saying all along.  So I asked them to call that manager back over... She came over, looked at my phone, then said that I was reading the ad wrong and that the games weren't BOGO 40% off.  I explained that they were and showed her the part of the ad that said *all* video games.  She still insisted that they weren't.  I suggested she call them.

She snatched the ad off the counter and walked away.... only to come back shortly later and instruct the employee to do the price match. :D  Man, it's awesome to know how things are supposed to work.  Had I not been worried about my own store selling out before I got back into town, I would have just gave up and bought it at home... but we didn't get a lot of copies in, so I didn't want to risk it.

Anyway, as I was *finally* checking out, the cashier started to ring up my figures with the second one being 40% off.  Being the good guy I am, I mentioned that I wasn't allowed to price match that because the figures did not have specific prices in the ad (although they're all virtually the same price everywhere anyway).  If I was trying to be a jerk, I wouldn't have clarified that, but I'm a nice guy. :D

Then, it was on to eat some real breakfast.  It was tasty, but they messed up my order and sent me out biscuits instead of sourdough toast.  Easy fix though.

Next, to Best Buy.  There was a CD my wife wanted and I figured I'd look to see if they had anything different.  They did have the new Terrafin, so I grabbed him and the strategy guide.  We went to check out... and the figure wouldn't ring up.  The register was refusing to sell it!  Serious!

Cashier rang up the guide and the CD and sent us back to the game center where they were going to take care of it.  Four associates later, they finally just scanned a different figure and called it a day.  We where joking around the entire time and at the end, the manager who was there apologized.  I said "That's fine, but can I have one of those pre-order kits for my trouble?" in a joking manner.  He looked to one of the other associates who said they weren't in the inventory, so he grabbed one and tossed it to me.  Yay! :D

Then, one final stop... GameStop.  I had pre-ordered their exclusive version of the Battle Pack the week it opened for pre-orders.  I paid the full price down.  I just *knew* I wasn't going to have any issues here, right?

Well... Went in and started looking at the figures.  Guy asked if I needed help.  I mentioned that I had a pre-order to pick up.  He looked up my account and saw it was the Battle Pack.  "Why didn't you pre-order the game here?"  "Eh, I wanted the exclusive Walmart version."  "Oh, all because the figure is painted a little different."  umm... Yeah?

He asked if there were any other figures I needed - I looked and said that I had already gotten them all this morning.  "Really?  Because I was told by several customers we had more than even Toys R Us had."  "That's probably because Toys R Us was wiped out first thing this morning..." "Yeah, that's because they're keeping 80 boxes in the back that they're not putting out until tomorrow because they're a toy store, not a game store."

Yeah... just give me my stuff so I can go.  It's funny, last year when Skylanders came out, I went into this same store to see if they had anything exclusive - they didn't, but I got grilled there about where I bought stuff.  I mentioned I got most of it at Toys R Us because they were doing a Buy-Two, Get-One Free then.  The guy (probably a different guy, I don't remember much) claimed they were doing that to clear out their stock because they weren't going to sell video games anymore. :D

Anyway, so what should have been a simple "Take my money" transaction turned into entire on-going morning of fun and excitement. :D

And I haven't even opened the games yet!
