General Chat / Posting from my phone... and my PC... at the same time!
« on: January 14, 2012, 04:52:23 PM »
So, I'm using this Android app that lets me stream my PC to my phone... I'm currently controlling my PC via my phone's keyboard while listening to music from my PC over my phone (with a little skipping, sadly).  Modern technology. :D

Sadly, the FN key on my phone's keyboard doesn't seem to work in this app, which means for most punctuation, I have to use my actual keyboard.... :D  It's neat though.

Nintendo Gaming / All (?) 50 WiiWare Demo Games now up for download
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:35:25 PM »
... I'm not 100% sure this is *all* of them (will check in a bit) - but this even appears to include the first round of demos (Pokémon Rumble, etc.) that, at one point, couldn't even be redownloaded if you had them and deleted them.

I don't know if this is a glitch, Nintendo's reaction to the Icon incident or what... I'm downloading the ones I've missed, then I'll compare the lists to see if anything appears to be missing...

NWR Forums Discord / Sometimes, the wife just doesn't understand...
« on: January 09, 2012, 10:28:46 PM »
My wife is pretty understanding about my obsessive Nintendo habits.  I use the term "understanding" loosely though, in that she hasn't left me yet. :D

Anyway, after I purchased the tickets for the awesome Zelda concert, she asked how much they were.

I confessed to my awful sin of paying ~$250 for the pair.  She didn't say much about it (this was an over-the-phone conversation).

Yesterday, her first day back in town (she was out of town with her parents on a business trip), I finally got to show her how awesome are seats are.

So, this is the entire theater:

We're in this section highlighted in yellow in the front:

Here's the yellow section, with the two sections right behind it:

We're in those two blue seats -  here's a zoom:

Seriously - these are awesome seats, right?

So, when I show this to my loving wife, she just looks at me and says "So... this means you could have got cheaper tickets?"

Nintendo Gaming / 3DS News Channel
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:24:30 PM »
So, I turned on my Wii today and had to flip over to my second page of channels.  There, I saw the news channel.

I *never* used this.  It was a neat idea, but if I was in a place to use my Wii, I had internet and news already.  But, it got me to thinking - how about a News Channel for the 3DS?  It could use Spot Pass to deliver updates to your 3DS whenever it has a connection and allow you to read the new articles whenever you have time - even without an internet connection.

Obviously, this isn't likely to have breaking stories or such, but if AP or Reuters could get on board, this could be pretty spiffy.

Nintendo Gaming / eShop review copies
« on: December 24, 2011, 11:14:43 AM »
So, I noticed some of my so-called "Friends" have been playing VVVVVV on the 3DS and not letting me in on the fun!  Knowing it wasn't out yet, I wondered what was going on.

Apparently, developers get to send out "review copies" via special codes.

Kotaku gave some out last night (miss out):
http://kotaku.com/5870930/vvvvvv-on-the-3ds-get-your-codes-for-vvvvvv-on-the-3ds-here-whos-ready

I didn't know developers were doing this at all - have they done it before with WiiWare/DSiWare, or is this something new?

Nintendo Gaming / The Nintendo Zone...
« on: December 07, 2011, 08:30:14 PM »
So, I've been home sick today... but there's no food in the house to speak of and my wife's gone overnight, so I had to venture into the cold to forage for sustenance.  Much like my ancestors once did.

So, I drove down to McDonald's.  Not my favorite place, but, according to Nintendo's little "find a Nintendo Zone" locator, they have a Nintendo Zone... so I figured I'd go check it out.

I went in, placed a to-go order (which, surprised, got messed up), then stood back and waited for my food.  Pulled out my DS and launched the Nintendo Zone app...  After searching, it said it found a Nintendo Zone - "Click here to Enter"... so I click...

NWR Forums Discord / My new business...
« on: December 03, 2011, 05:47:16 PM »
I'm going to start a business.

The most important rule of business is - location, location, location!

So, in true Zelda form, I'm going to find some far away, remote location for my business.  Perhaps you'll need to randomly bomb some stuff to find my business.  Maybe you'll need some crazy, off the wall device that there's only one of in the entire world and it's hidden deep in some mysterious chamber, protected by crap-tons of angry, crazed monsters who only hang around in hopes of killing stupid people who wonder by.  Either way, finding my business won't be easy.

What kind of business will I have?  I'm thinking some kind of carnival-themed game.  Those seem popular.  However, I want to make mine special - so in order to play it, you're going to need that same crazy-one-of-a-kind device that I mentioned above just to play.

Obviously, no one will want to play my game unless there's prizes!  So, I'll find one really rare thing to give out as a prize.  Since no one will find my business, and, on the off chance they actually do find it, they probably won't be able to play my game - because, really, who's going to go into the crazy dungeon to get the crazy device just to play my game (even though it'll be awesome) - I'll only need one of these.  Now, if the stars should align just right and someone does win the good prize, then I guess I'll just give out money as the prize.  Obviously, more than it takes to play.

Nothing could go wrong with giving away money - because if someone actually happens to find my business *and* they have the crazy-device needed to play *and* they are able to win, not just once, but multiple times...

....

...they've *got* to have something better to do than just play my game over and over again, slowly taking all my money... right?  Like saving the love of their life or something?  Surely they wouldn't just hang around at my game, playing it repeatedly until I'm broke and I have to survive by eating bugs and making a living by carrying no less than five pumpkins at a time to the shed for some sadist woman who doesn't realize I could carry one or two, get there faster and not drop them....

Yeah, it's a good business plan.  Y'all should stop by, if you happen to find where I've set up.

Nintendo Gaming / Memorex Universal Game Selector
« on: November 14, 2011, 01:08:28 AM »
Nintendo once teased me... and I've never gotten over it.

Some time ago, when some revision of the DS (I think the DSi)  was being discussed, someone with Nintendo mentioned in some interview that they had designed a system with two card slots, but removed one to save space.

Ever since this, I've dreamed about the possibility of multiple card slots in my DS.  Usually, I have a case that carries a few titles - 1) Whatever flavor of the month I'm currently playing (Previously Mass Attack, Skylanders - Now, Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton).  2) I like to carry a puzzle game with me.  Pictocross, Tetris, etc.  Depending if I have three titles in the first category, I may not have one of these.  3) New Super Mario Bros.  Always.  Mario vs. Luigi mode is a *staple* of my DS time and I'll challenge any one of you and even put money down on my victory.  I wish Nintendo would just release a downloadable version of this.  Throw in some new levels and I'd pay $30 for a digital download, Nintendo.  Please, take my money.

Anyway, so I was in Best Buy tonight and I spotted something that seemed like the answer to my dreams - the Memorex Universal Game Selector.

Yes, apparently Memorex makes gaming accessories now.

Perhaps they shouldn't.

I was going to wait until I broke this in some more to comment on it, but I messed around with it a bit more tonight and it's pretty cut and dry.  The actual concept works great - plug it in to any DS system (it advertises DS Lite, DSi, DSiXL and 3DS - but it does work with the original DS as well).  Put in up to three cartridges, plug it into the system and you're good to go.  A small sliding switch allows you to swap between the three cartridges you've got loaded in the selector.

Again, it works great on all DS systems - although on the original DS and DS Lite, you do have to completely power down the DS before flipping the switch.  On the other DS systems, you can just swap it willy-nilly (although, of course, not while one of the games are actually loaded).

The adapter is pretty streamlined and for those of us with bigger hands, it actually helps give some grip to the system - although I'm sure some won't like the extra heft, it doesn't really add that much bulk to it.  It does not use any extra batteries or any other power source, so that's a plus - I can't imagine it puts any kind of a drain on the battery either.  The adapter was designed so that all ports, plugs and styli slots are accessible.  However - if you plan to use it with other accessories (one of the battery grips, the Circle Pad Pro, etc.) you're out of luck  it just wouldn't work.

Now, while it does sound pretty awesome - I must declare this not at all worth a purchase.  The adapter is just too loose - putting it in and taking it out of my carrying case pulls the adapter out - this is a huge no-no, as I often throw my 3DS in the case with a game on Standby/sleep mode.  Yanking the cartridge out is, of course, not acceptable.  Because the adapter was designed for all DS units, it doesn't really "hug" the system well - it merely slides in the cartridge slot and this is all that holds it.  Because of the hump at the top where it bends around to the back, and because of the ejection mechanism for DS cartridges, a simple bump will cause the entire thing to pop out of the system.  I could even see some vigorous motion gaming knocking the adapter out if you moved your hands just right.  Seriously, this is a huge flaw and I don't even see how this product made it out of testing.  Oddly enough, the adapter is actually a pretty tight fit in the original DS - the one that it doesn't really advertise it works with.

So, there you have it.  I wasted $20 so you don't have to.

Now, if you're a GBA SP fan, related, you might check out this:
http://www.amazon.com/Game-Boy-Advance-SP-Changer/dp/B00009IM2I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321250766&sr=8-1

A similar attachment for the GBASP.  Aside from the fact that it makes the system frickin' huge, this actually works quite well.  Sadly, I got mine in 2008 for super-cheap from Amazon during a sale they were having.  2008 being long after I carried my GBA (let alone multiple GBA games) around with me.  It's a great item though.  It *is* limited to working on the GBASP and won't work on the original GBA, DS or DS Lite.

General Gaming / Game Overload
« on: October 22, 2011, 01:34:11 PM »
Is anyone else having a bit of Game Overload here?
Still have a few levels in Kirby Mass Attack to finish up.
Still have a bit of Four Swords to play...
Skylanders for the DS and Wii to play though (about 3/5ths done with the DS version, haven't cracked the Wii Version yet).
New Professor Layton (Never thought I'd see the day I was playing a different game on Layton release day...).
Kirby Wii coming out...
Skyward Sword...
Super Mario 3D Land...
Mario Kart 7...
Hell, I bought Tetris Axis and it's not even on my radar for being played any time soon.

Being an adult sucks.  You have to have a job so you can buy games, but you don't have time to play them because you have a job.  This must have been what Sydney Porter was talking about.  Gonna have to have my wife put chops on for dinner when she gets home.

General Gaming / Skylanders: DLC... or something different.
« on: October 20, 2011, 02:48:16 AM »
So, the game itself aside (for those who have played it), I'm curious as to what y'alls thoughts are on the business model that the Skylanders game has.

I keep seeing it likened to DLC - if that's the case, there's some good and some bad with it...  The "bad" - it's one of those cases where the DLC is already on the disc, and you just have to pay to unlock it.  This idea doesn't bother me, personally - so long as the full-priced game has similar content for a full game of its type.  However, with Skylanders... man, if you don't buy at least 5 more figures there's a lot you're going to miss out on.  You can beat the game with the three that come packed in, but there appears to be so much more that you really need one of each element to do... so, $35-$40 worth of DLC to play the vast majority of the game... ick.

The "good" - the DLC isn't tied to one system.  Hell, it isn't even tied to one company's system - my Whirlwind figure works on my 3DS, my Wii and someone else's PS3/360... as often as I want, as many times as I want, with no restrictions.  As long as everything still works, I'll be able to break these puppies out in 20 years and use them without working about having to redownload something from a non-existent server or such.  You're actually getting something physical.  For those of us who still like touching, we get to - and man, these tiny figures are so much more cool than shiny discs.
So... thoughts?

Nintendo Gaming / Show me your menus!
« on: October 02, 2011, 08:03:48 PM »
Inspired by two previous topics where this has came up, I thought a topic to show off/discuss your 3DS menu organization might be fun.

So, here's how mine usually looks (pics take with the DSi camera, for fun!)
I usually keep mine on the 3x5 option.  I'm considering going to the 4x? option at some point...

Here's my main screen:

Next up, (most of) my DSiWare:

On the bottom row, there's the Clubhouse Games mini's, leading into the puzzle games, leading into the Mario games, leading into...

...more Mario games! Here's my first Virtual Console tab, Mario games at the bottom, Zelda games in the middle and "other" games at the top.  Metroid is there on the edge, the square next to it is empty, waiting for Metroid 2.

This is my other "Virtual Console" tab - counting the DSiWare Game and Watch titles as Virtual Console titles. :D
At the top, you have Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Donkey Kong Jr.  Also, Game and Watch from the original Game Boy and my Ambassador certificate.  Kirby is kinda hiding at the bottom, he's a hold over from the row of platformers (i.e.: Mario) titles before him.

Here's most of the videos.  Each of the videos in the top row corresponds with the video in the middle row.  Before the latest videos came out, I had all these one one page, along with the two video apps (Nintendo Video and Netflix).  This is why I'm considering going to the 4x? size screen.

Finally, there's everything else.  This is the stuff I don't really use very often.

And, if you want to see it all zoomed out:

Who's next?

Nintendo Gaming / First, Four Swords... next... Mario Bros.?
« on: October 01, 2011, 10:40:49 PM »
Dear Nintendo: Thank you for Four Swords.  It was pretty frickin' awesome for you to just give us that.  Granted, I would have loved an online mode, but let's be honest, I would have bought it without one.

But, next up - please consider a re-release of the Game Boy Advance/Super Mario Advance series version of Mario Bros. Classic.  The 4-player mode in this was a blast - and since the game is pretty basic, putting an on-line play mode in it should be pretty easy.  I'll even help play test for you. :D
