The Rules

Voting

-   Every player is allowed to post a vote against whomever they would like to eliminate that day.
-   Every player is only allowed one vote that will count in the daily tally unless there is a specific role or ability that allows them multiple votes.
-   You can change your vote multiple times throughout a Game Day.
-   If you want your vote to count then it must show the words Vote and the player’s name in bold. Example: Vote Bill Aurion
-   If you want to change your vote then add the “un” prefix to the front of the word Vote and unbold the text. Example: un-vote Bill Aurion
-   If a player has not correctly followed the un-vote procedure then their new vote will not be vaild until it is corrected. Example: a player unbolded their previous vote of “Vote Khushrenada” and then posted Vote Bill Aurion. Even though it was unbolded, the un was not added to the word vote so neither the old vote nor the new vote are valid.
-   Once the deadline for the Game Day is reached and the thread is locked then all the player’s votes are locked in and cannot be changed.

Win Conditions

Townies: Must remove all the Boo Mafia members as well as Luigi and Gooigi from the game.

Mafia:Must have the Dark Moon crystal in their possession and Luigi and Gooigi must be eliminated from the game. They do not need to eliminate all the townies but can win by equaling or exceeding the amount of townies left in the game provided they meet the above win conditions.

Luigi/Gooigi: They must eliminate all the other players including their opposite half and be in possession of the Dark Moon crystal. However, Luigi or Gooigi can fast track themselves to a quicker victory by gaining possession of the Dark Moon crystal at any point in the game and then being able to hold onto it through one Day and Night cycle.

Majority Vote Rule

Each game day can last a maximum of 36 - 48 hours depending on what the host selects for that day.

The maximum day length period will be mentioned each day in the Announcements post for that Day’s Thread.

Game Days can end sooner if the player’s reach a majority vote and it stays unchanged for 90 minutes. Example: Let's imagine there are 16 players and 9 players vote Player A, 3 vote for Player B and 1 votes for Player C. In this case, Player A would be voted out provided there's no change in Player A's vote total in the 90 minutes starting from when the 9th vote was cast making the vote a majority vote. The day would end after the 90 minutes wait even if there was still hours to go in the maximum day period.

In the case of 16 players, 9 votes is the majority. Even if other players hadn't voted yet, it doesn't matter since all the remaining votes combined could only equal 7 which is a minority vote. I will post a reminder of the number of votes needed to reach a majority each day in the Announcements post for that Game Day.

If the Majority Vote Changes After The Countdown Begins

Let's say that the 9th vote was cast for Player A but an hour later, the 7th person to vote Player A decides to change their vote from Player A to Player B. However, 20 minutes after that change, another player logs on and votes for Player A restoring the 9 votes against Player A. In this example, Player A would not be eliminated in 10 minutes from the new 9th vote. The majority vote was lost in between that 90 minute wait period. Even though the majority was restored within that first initial 90 minute wait period, a new 90 minute wait period starts from when the new 9th vote cast.

Likewise, let’s say in the above scenario that the 7th player to vote Player A changes their vote an hour into the Majority Vote countdown to Player B. But then 15 minutes later decides to change their vote back to Player A. Player A would not be eliminated in 15 minutes with the restored majority. The Majority Vote had been broken and the countdown must start anew even though it had been restored to its original form in this example.

If a Majority Vote Is Not Achieved

If a majority vote isn't reached before 48 hours is up then whoever has the most votes at the end of the Game Day voting period is the one voted out. So, if the votes are 6 for Player A, 5 for Player B, and 3 for Player C, then Player A is voted out because of having the highest vote total even though 2 players didn't vote and could have put Player B in a higher vote total but did not do so before the voting time had ended.

The "No Vote" Option

In this game, players can choose to make their vote to not eliminate anyone. Simply type No Vote in bold like you would as if you were selecting a player to vote out. Players can choose to achieve a majority with the No Vote option if they want to. In this case, no player would be eliminated from the vote that day. However, players with roles would still be able to use their abilities. In addition, if a majority vote for No Vote is not reached but No Vote has the highest number of votes at the end of the voting period then no player would be eliminated. In an odd twist, if the day ends in a tie between one player and a No Vote option then the No Vote will not count and there would not be a tiebreaker. The player who tied with the No Vote tally will be eliminated. If two or more players tie the No Vote total at the end of the day then there would be a tiebreaker.

Voting Tiebreaker

If, at the end of the voting period, the result is a tie then the player with the Hellen Gravely role controls the outcome. I suggest you read up on all roles but to briefly outline it here.

Hellen Gravely can choose to either:
 - Option 1: Eliminate one of the tied players
 - Option 2: Choose to not eliminate anyone.
 - Option 3: Consider the whole day's vote as null and void for not selecting a single choice and eliminate any remaining player they choose instead.

It is entirely their decision how they wish to resolve it and which option they'd like to choose. This tiebreaking ability/role can also be captured by Luigi or Gooigi during the game making the player who then controls it the new tiebreaker. If Hellen Gravely is eliminated and neither Luigi or Gooigi gain control of it then the tiebreak will be handled by the host. In that situation, all players will be up for a possible elimination along with the option that no one gets eliminated and it will be a random draw as to the result.

Resolving Orders

I see the game as divided by its Day and Night sections. If a player with an ability is voted out during the day portion then they should not be able to use their ability at night since they were unable to reach that portion by being eliminated in the day. For example, if Luigi is voted out during the day then that player could not make a hit that night if it had been available to them.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia LXXXVI: Sign-up Thread
« on: September 10, 2021, 12:46:49 AM »
Is there still demand for a Mafia game? Do the users who still check out this place once in awhile still feel like meeting up for another round? I guess we'll find out. Since I get the feeling that users may not check up on the forums as often as they once did (maybe once a week or so) I suppose it would be a good idea to let this sign-up thread run for a couple weeks meaning I'd likely launch the game for Sept. 27 although it could be sooner if it turns out this sign-up thread fills up quite quickly. So, let's test the water and see who would still be up for this. Sign up below in the thread if you are ready for any sort of Mafia action.

General Gaming / What Is Your White Whale of Gaming?
« on: July 16, 2021, 12:56:28 PM »
It could be anything from a console that you wanted to own, a game you wanted to play, or an event. Whatever is gaming related that has stuck in your head for years and still haven't done or accomplished or may never be able to achieve.

For myself, I'm going to select The Neverhood.

Link to YouTube for the trailer.

I'd never heard the game until one afternoon when I was at someone's house and they showed it to me on their computer. It looked amazing. What further blew my young mind was that the game was shot using actual claymation so it was all sort of real-life. Everything you saw on the screen existed in the real world at some point. The whole point-and-click adventure type of gameplay was something that was still new to me and I hadn't really experienced before but the idea of solving puzzles to progress like that just gave my brain a further charge of excitement and the question or challenge of whether I could prove to be clever or smart enough to solve it all was something thrilling to ponder on. The person I was with showed me a bit of where he was in the game and what he'd done and was now trying to figure out but one thing that stood out was this section where it was a lot of text over multiple walls. The game had this lore and back story that you could read all about at your leisure and was supposedly quite lengthy. I thought it was pretty impressive that so much thought was put into the game like that and you could just lose yourself in that history. Years later, when playing Metroid Prime and scanning Chozo Lore off walls, I thought back to this game and that wall of lore.

Even though I've always wanted to play this title, it's yet to happen. At the time, our family computer wasn't powerful enough to run it nor did I have the money to buy the game. Heck, I never really saw it for sale at the time. Years later, when I had could meet those requirements, it was no longer available and the only option seemed to be some discs on eBay at around $100 which seemed too much for a game (and I guess I still think is rather high). I also didn't want a disc. I wanted it complete. Then over time, other classic PC games started getting ported to consoles. Monkey Island got some remasters and ports. Grim Fandango was another one. I've always held out hope that The Neverhood may also get ported someday but that seems unlikely. I suppose piracy might be an option but I've never bothered with that scene because I've wanted to avoid stupidly downloading some virus or malware. However, nowadays it is probably a lot easier to find trusted and authenticated sources.

At this point, I also wonder just how well this game may have held up or if it will be a disappointment now. Having finally played Grim Fandango, there was things I liked about it but it was not quite the game I had thought it was from the screenshots and promo art I'd seen over time. There were a few times that I just got blocked in progression. I suppose I should just be more willing to quickly check a guide on things rather than waste time being frustrated and fatigued from circling over everything to try and find the solution.

Still, I hope that someday I'll finally tackle this game and go through it. To finally conquer this long time gaming memory that pops up from time to time in my mind even now. Then I'll have to step back and assess to see what might take its place as my next white whale of gaming.

How about all of you? Any one else have something like this that they ruminate on?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Switch Wishlist Game Recommendations
« on: June 28, 2021, 05:53:28 PM »
I recently scoured through all the titles listed as available for Switch or coming to it either physically or digitally and made a list of all the games that interested me or line up with my taste in some way. I created this list as a sort of buyer's guide for me for the titles I plan to watch out for and possible sales or deals that may come up for them.

(Obviously, titles I already own aren't on it so don't be shocked that I seemingly show no interest in something like Super Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition because I don't mention them. Movies & TV / Khushrenada's Annual Oscar Thread. 2021 Edition.
« on: April 25, 2021, 04:55:27 PM »
I was asked or reminded if I was doing my usual Oscar thread this year by Mr. Bungle a little while ago. I had completely forgotten about doing that this year. Two big factors being that I haven't seen the movies nominated for Best Picture (in fact, the only movie I've seen that has any nominations in any categories is Emma) and the whole event and ceremony just seems lowkey and low energy that I almost forgot it was happening today. Still, I've been doing this for some time now so I might as well keep the tradition alive. Been a long time since there was an Oscar night in which I hadn't seen any of the movies nominated for Best Picture or such a low amount but that's 2020 for you and the fact that I'm not subscribed to any streaming services. Such a maverick!

I guess it will be an interesting experiment to see if not having any opinions or emotions to the movies being nominated makes a factor in better predicting the results or if it will be worse or the same. All I can really do is base the predictions off of other people's thoughts and other award ceremonies before this. So, let's just get to the nominations.

The Categories That Have The Most Consensus

Best Picture: Nomadland

If you've been following my past threads then you know that I seem to really suck at picking the actual big prize winner. Perhaps this will be the kiss of death for Nomadland. However, all the talk I've seen since checking in from time to time on best movies from last year seems to keep putting Nomadland as the top film. It's been winning every Best Picture award at other ceremonies leading up to the Oscars but so did 1917 last year and then it lost. Will this be another scenario? It's had to say but I think for once I'm alright with this prediction because of how weak this year's field sort of is. There's no other movie nominated that's been making big enough waves or gaining word of mouth as a better choice for Best Picture. With no major competition, I think it will finish its trajectory to get the win tonight at the Oscars.

Best Director: Chloé Zhao

Like the picture Nomadland, Chloe has been winning every directing award for the job she did with Nomadland including the Director's Guild Award for this film. The DGA winner has a high percentage of being the Oscar winner although exceptions can happen. (Sam Mendes won it last year for 1917 and then lost the Oscar to Boon for Parasite so nothing's ever certain.) While the Oscars have been splitting the winner of Best Director and Best Picture quite a bit over the last decade, there's been nothing to really indicate a reason for a split here or anyone else nominated that might be overdue for a win or being highly praised for their effort as well. The one thing that might give a person pause is Thomas Vinterberg who was nominated here. Although his movie isn't nominated for the Best Picture award it is in the running for the Best Internation Film so maybe he gets a Director's win here for it.

Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya

It's possible there could be an upset here but as the stats go, no person in modern history has lost the Oscar after winning all the televised award shows. With Daniel winning all those previous awards leading up to this point, he's most likely to win here.

Animated Feature Film: Soul

While some pundits wonder whether Pixar could be defeated by the film Wolfwalkers, Soul has been getting all the love and awards up to this point and it seems like another solid Pixar effort to give them yet another win in this category.

Original Score: Soul

Likewise, Soul seems poised to win in the Original Score category as the music has been winning other awards up to the Oscars and is a movie with a focus on music which probably further helps make it stand out from the other nominations. Plus, Jon Batiste is on Colbert's Late Show and they've been talking about some of his other wins for Soul at times so perhaps that will give it further recognition for Academy voters.

Best International Film: Another Round

It has a recognizable international star in Mads Mikkelson as the lead and the director was nominated for a Best Director award which doesn't happen often for an International (Foreign) Film as the Oscars only have 5 slots to give out for nominations. It would seem this movie has some rooting interest with some Academy members and thus is highly likely to win this award.

Sound: Sound of Metal

The Oscars finally merged the Sound categories together after so much debate about them for so long. Usually, the two Sound categories made up a part of the Dreaded Six categories that were anyone's guess. Now, not only is there one less of the Dreaded Six still around, this year the newly combined Sound category is being called a lock for Sound of Metal to win it since the movies got a big focus on sound. So, who am I to disagree? (That said, Soul did get a nomination here as well and with its focus on music then it might gain some support here as well. However, Sound of Music has a Best Picture nomination among others but it doesn't seem likely to win the other categories it has nominations in making this the one place where it could get some love from the voters that liked it enough to make it a Best Picture nominee.)

Hello NWR Forum users. Welcome to the 10th edition of Run the Series, a poorly run forum series that just won't quit. We are just a few days shy of it being one full year since the last entry so clearly this series wasn't built to withstand a pandemic.  :P

Some may wonder why make another entry in this series. Does anyone even care about it at this point? Good question and I wondered it myself. Then I discovered that the last entry on Metroid has almost 104,000 views! That's more views than the Switch Friend Code which has been stickied atop this forum for 4 years! More views than a three year old thread on Smash Ultimate. More views than a 5 year thread on Xenoblade Chronicles X. More views than like 95% than most of the topics available here on these forums. More views than any other entry in the series and I have no idea why. 29 posts and 10 votes for the poll but somehow we hit viewer click pay dirt with that topic. Can we do it again? Probably not. It's likely a fluke. But let's try chasing that high and see what happens with this entry.

Run the Series Mission Statement

From past posts, I am sometimes surprised at what games users on these forums have played or missed in a franchise and it's made me curious about the gaming habits of all our various users here. It also made curious as to what my gaming experience looks like compared to others. I thought I'd see if I could find out more information on the matter by creating a series of threads designed to look at different franchises found on Nintendo systems to see what series the users here like. What franchises do people still find important to keep up with and what series have they let lapse or play infrequently? What are the franchises people haven't even touched or have fully completed? Which games are the most common shared experience in a series and which ones are the least?

For each entry, I've created a poll and the poll lists all the games considered as franchise entries.* Users can then select which games in the series they have beat. When I mean beat, I'm just referring to completing the main quest or storyline and seeing the credits and not if you've completed every other side quest or mission similar to how Backloggery would classify those terms. This poll is a chance to let all users see how they stack up again users from this forum.

In addition, if you want to provide more information about what your level of completion is on games, feel free to post about it. For that matter, feel free to give your thoughts on the series. Why you play it, why you don't, what's your favorite entry, least favorite entry, how you'd rank the entry in the series, what you'd like to see, what you don't want to see, etc. You know the drill. Whatever comments you want to make based on the series under discussion or specific games in the poll, this thread is open for you to do so.

*Or at least my take on what the series consists of. You are welcome to tell me how wrong I am with my selections.  :'(

Past Entries in the Series

1st Edition - 2D Mario Platformers
2nd Edition - Pokémon Main Series
3rd Edition - Donkey Kong (Country Style)
4th Edition - Wario Platformers
5th Edition - Mario Kart
6th Edition - 2D Zelda Games
7th Edition - Star Fox
8th Edition - Professor Layton
9th Edition - Metroid

If you are new to this forum series and/or you missed an entry and/or have recently played something in the series and now want to comment on it, feel free to check out the past entries and post as desired. Bumping Khushrenada threads is always a welcome practice on these forums.

Hosting Lesson: Now, as a host of Safe Words, it is up to you if the game includes any narrative hook or purpose. Maybe you just have a selection of words based on a theme and that's good enough for you. Let the players make a joke or two and play the game through in the basic fashion it was created. Nothing wrong with that as a narrative can make things trickier and sometimes harder to post about as the game advances and continues. I've done different variations myself and I can't say I've seen much difference in player engagement with a greater narrative focus compared to a lesser one. Thus, the only reason to make the job harder with a bigger narrative is to score style points and feel like you've accomplished a big job. However, I don't feel the need for complicating things and proving anything as a host so I'm not going to go that route. Still, I do like to have some simple reason or purpose for why players are selecting words. Having some angle for the game does give a host a little something else to work with to keep one's posts varied and interesting as the game goes on.

Thinking about this game, with its random basis being picking various songs from an old variety album, there's not much rhyme or reason behind that. It's kind of silly and pointless so perhaps the hook should be also. But what kind of narrative purpose can there be? I'll admit this might be the trickiest part for a host if you opt to include a narrative. I checked out events of music in 1990 when the CD was released. Nothing really inspired me there but it did give me a couple ideas for eliminations. I thought about if I was an record studio head or radio station manager and the other players were agents trying to bribe me to record or play something from their client. While it had potential, it didn't make sense as rounds went on and different players selected different songs and artists. All these bands are constantly swapping and changing agents? I wondered about framing it as a musical competition like American Idol or the Voice where players are covering different songs. A bit better to using as a theme. But it just wasn't quite stupid or over the top enough for me. Going back to the agent route, I wondered about me being the agent of these bands but what am I trying to do with them and the players selecting them? What if the players were singers or bands and I was trying to get them to play these songs? Perhaps a bad performance of the song ruins their career? Getting closer but not quite right. Oh! What if the players are big name performers (heck, this could even allow for some role play as any artist performing back in 1990) and I'm trying to get them to hire these artists as their opening act and things go awry from there?  :o  Ah, now that's got pretty good and leaves things open ended for me to come up with dumb eliminations. I can sense I'll probably still be challenged with quickly figuring out a musical disaster when it is time to eliminate a player but I'll just have to do the best I can when those bomb words hit.

Now, if I'm going to be an agent at the dawn of the 90s then I'm going to be a smarmy, wild partying, cocaine fueled con man out to wheel and deal to do all I can to get all the profit I can before the clock expires on the public's appreciation of my client's music. Did a Google search on scummy music agent. Got no real results. Tried terrible music agent but again a bit of a bust. Then I decided to try wild party man and the first image is a winner!

Just call me Treize "King Gong" Khushrenada, agent to the music stars!

And with that, it's time to get this party started and have a profitable 1990!

NWR Forums Discord / Now That's What I Call Safe Words 17! Sign-up Thread!
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:20:19 PM »

Oh!

Hello there!

Sorry, I was lost in thought and didn't see you enter this thread. However, I'm glad you stopped by. ;D  My name is Treize Khushrenada. You may be familiar with me on these forums as that poster who irregularly posts topics for the day or the poster most suspected of possibly having a second account on this forum. (I'll never tell.  ;) )

During my time here, I've achieved many great things like getting banned for the Free Super demonstration or getting banned for re-creating Wandering's Minnie the Moocher stunt. However, the achievement I'd most like to define my legacy on these forums is that of creating Safe Words.

Now don't get me wrong. I still very much love a good Mafia game but hosting a Mafia game can be like making a Lobster Lasagna. Yes, it's delicious but it also takes a lot of work to achieve all those layers of flavor. But hosting Safe Words is more like making a pizza. It's much simpler yet it still offers a wide variety of possibilities. And if there's one thing I know for sure about these forums, it's that everyone here loves a Safe Words pizza!

Yet, despite the ease of hosting a Safe Words game, people rarely seem to want to step up and do so. I don't know why that it is. You get to watch other posters develop anxiety from their choices, it's a great way to up your post count and, at some point, you get to inform Insanolord that, once again, he's lost another game of Safe Words. What more could a host ask for?

Perhaps it is the idea of choosing a theme. Well, guess what? The choices and theme don't really matter. It could be anything. Just look around you. It could be a list of the apps on your phone or the food in your pantry. It could be the chapters in a book or it could be tv shows from the 1988 CBS Primetime Fall Schedule or maybe just a random CD in your collection. Like this one, Now That's What I Call Music 17. That's the UK label not to be confused with the inferior US brand's version of Now That's What I Call Music 17 because that's not what I call music. But then again, artistic merit isn't really the point. The point is to just keep pumping out these games as they aren't much use once they've been played. You may want to make it as current as you can (this is the 17th game and I choose the 17th edition of this music series so mission accomplished there) but don't let that hold you up. It's really about minimum effort for maximum profit.

So, please sign up and join me as I pull back the curtain and reveal all my Safe Words hosting tips and tricks while we take on the music industrial complex. I'll show you just how slapdash a Safe Words game can be and how the consumers players will still eat it up anyways. Because at the end of the day, this game is like a pizza and everyone will eat a pizza no matter how it's made.

Nintendo Gaming / Atelier Ryza Series
« on: February 04, 2021, 06:16:42 PM »
So, I don't know how much traction this particular topic will get but I'm going to use it as a test case of more forum gimmickry sparkling innovations by incorporating Discord discussions onto the forums. Hopefully the posters on Discord don't mind being quoted here and having their content spread throughout the shared NWR cinematic social-media universe.

I only became aware of Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout late last year when it came up in discussion on NWR's Discord. I think it was Matt Z that brought up a few times how much he like it and was looking forward to the sequel. I don't remember ever hearing or seeing anything about it before so I looked it up and it did look rather appealing. The art style and the story premise almost sold me on the game but the RPG elements and crafting mechanisms made me pause as to whether it would kill my enjoyment or not. Still, it is a game that is now on my potential buy radar.

I was also curious as to how the sequel, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy, would fare and from impressions it seems to be winning people over more than the first. The idea of exploring ruins and solving mysteries behind them is something which always excites me as a gamer. It's a big reason why I enjoy Metroid or BotW and many other games and series. From the chatter I'm seeing, it may low-key be the first great Switch game to be released for 2021.

Here's a trailer for the Lost Legends if you are also unfamiliar with what these games look like.

Here's what's being said so far about it on Discord.

I’m 3/7 of the way through Ryza 2 now.  Continued to be blown away.  Some of the systems can be pretty esoteric at first, but so far I’d say it’s one of the best JRPGs on switch and continues to be a big step up from 1.

While the Switch's sales success may seem like old news by now, it seems like every time Nintendo releases a financial report about how it is doing, the numbers keep finding new ways to stun and impress. Nintendo can also adding earning the first Topic of the Day for 2021 to their report as well.  8)

I was going to post this in the Rate the Last Movie and then I realized I should follow my own advice and just start a thread for it.

I'll preface this by stating that, for the most part, I'm not a fan of the horror genre and very little of it is effective. The few times it can conjure genuine fright or get under the skin is often when it isn't necessarily trying to be a horror film but more a hybrid thriller or possible sci-fi scenario like Jaws or Jurassic Park or Alien. Or when it might be something I've already got a fear of like Piranha. I guess when it is almost sort of closer to man vs nature that it can work for me. But often when it is a horror film based on the supernatural or a slasher / serial killer movie than I either find the whole thing dumb / artificial and kind of laughable or else it is just a miserable experience of watching people suffer and die for no good reason. (Although horror films try to justify it by making some of the victims seem like jerks in some manner or that they deserve such a horrible comeuppance but I'm never really on the side of the killer.)

So, with that out of the way, I found The Shining to mainly be on the laughable side of things. Jack Nicholson gives the comic performance of his career. I think part of the reason I've never gotten around to watching The Shining is because The Simpsons spoiled and summarized it up so well over a couple decades ago. That said, when watching Ready Player One, it had a large portion of the plot dedicated around this movie and I realized then that there was more to it than I realized or knew. However, having seen all that Ready Player One had in it and what The Simpsons did in the Treehouse of Horror version of it, there really weren't any surprises on watching it now. So, that could be a factor in lessening the impact and tension the movie may have once had or could have had on first viewing but there have been other movies I've gone into without really knowing what all is in it or how it will unfold even with some prior knowledge and still finding the whole thing absolutely ridiculous, like A Nightmare on Elm Street for example.

Here's a bunch stuff off the top of my head though after watching it:

-So, first there's the story in the job interview about a previous caretaker losing his mind and killing his family. And you know what? That's fine. That alone works. Isolation, strange noises, unfamiliar locale. All of that can play on the mind and then hearing that story could plant a seed in the mind and cause one to think about it more now that they're in the sort of same situation. But then it also has to lay it on thick with it possibly being around the same area as the Donner Party and the hotel manager telling them it was built on an Indian Burial Ground (which always seems to be the land developers want to build on the most!). It's not enough to be a psychological thriller but the place has to have a history of bad juju.

-That bad psychic history is probably there also due to Danny boy having a sort of unexplained psychic ability: The Shining! Which mainly exists to try and create dread for the future along with showing the horror of the past. As well as try and make the kid creepy near the end with his throaty voice and red rum chanting.

-Speaking of red rum, there was another Simpsons episode where Marge sells the Flanders a house that once had a killing in it and Rod or Todd is chanting red room, red room because he wants to paints his room red. At first, I thought that's also what was being said here. There's a scene with Jack when he's in a very red washroom having a conversation with another character. I thought maybe Danny is referencing this red room as a warning for the fall of their father. But then after, he's still chanting and saying red rum. I was wondering if that was supposed to be on purpose to confuse the mother for awhile until she figures out and finds a red room. I was still going on the basis that a child wrote and misspelled red room when Danny first has the vision of a door with those words because of that Simpsons reference. When he began writing the words on the door, I thought it odd how a child could write and the D and R backwards was correct especially when the first R was done the right way. It wasn't until he was finishing up the M that I realized it was supposed to be spelling murder backwards which Shelley's character immediately sees in the mirror a few seconds after.

-When Jack's first telling his wife to not interrupt him when he works and to GTFO, I was laughing more at the delivery and much of an ass he was already at character-wise. He almost seems to be doing his Joker performance here except I think his Joker performance was actually a bit more restrained and less crazy than here! It occurred to me that the idea of playing a character who goes insane or slowly crazy is probably a role that would be highly appealing to a performer yet watching this I realized that it's a role which could also go off the rails depending on how its done which seems to happen with Nicholson's performance through a lot of this.

-At the same time, there's never really anything that shows, indicates or gives any kind of build-up to Jack's character losing it. The movie just jumps to a month later after getting to the hotel. He seems to be experiencing writer's block based on Shelley's character trying to give him encouragement and that seems to be angering him but there's nothing to show he's bothered by the isolation both of the area and that which he's self-imposing on himself. There's a scene where he's staring out the window and the film sort of snaps with static and colored lines to indicate the mental break is happening but it's just so sudden for the audience because of the time jump and having seen him, I guess, ok when getting the tour of the hotel. It just seems like he's crazy from the get-go and with the way he seems to be already annoyed with his family on the trip to the hotel, maybe he just got fed-up being stuck with them even longer.

-That said, when Jack gives his account of the arm incident to the bartender, that's a good monologue and really comes the closest we get to getting into his head of what he's feeling and thinking on. I suppose it might explain why he has that annoyance with his family which is perhaps more guilt at himself. As well, the scene where he and Danny talk for a bit and Danny asks if he would ever hurt him or mom. There's a tenseness there of a man trying to say the right thing and be a good father but unable to emotionally say or indicate it and a child that's likewise sort of tense and a bit afraid of the father. The arm incident explains some of that with the growing unease of his odd behavior added but that moment just really worked for me. And then from the time Shelley begins swinging the bat at Jack to the end, I thought his performance was fine from then on as the madness was now embraced by the character and known to all. I don't think I laughed at anything else about the performance from then on.

-Although the ending shot of him staring up at the sky looking like a loon did get a final laugh from me.

-For a movie that references all kinds of past murders and death, it is surprising that it only had the one killing. When the head chef got back to the Overlook Hotel, the only thing I wasn't sure on was whether he was going to get Groundskeeper Willie'd. I thought it was highly likely and he did. Just in the front instead of the back like Willie. But seriously. You think there could be big trouble and people in danger. You're an old man but you'll just go alone. Won't bring any of the rangers or some other people with you just in case? I get that you may not want to seem crazy as your only reason for coming is a psychic communication from a child. A communication that can't tell you what exactly is going on but there's no one else with The Shining that you could bring with you or might be closer to the area that you have to go yourself? He said he met others. How many others are there? Would that maybe keep in touch someway? Seems like you may want to communicate with such ones about stuff you experience.

-What's up with room 237? The old guy said not to go in there but what's it about? Do guests use it during the summer or not? Did an old lady just drown there once? How'd the key get in the door and it end up unlocked? Can the ghost go to the front desk and get the key? Which brings me to...

-So, Jack talks with the ghost of the killer caretaker from the past and that ghost unlocks the pantry door so he can escape. It would seem that ghosts can open doors and locks. Likewise, Danny is hurt by the ghost in room 237. So, why aren't the ghosts just trying to kill the family? Why do they need to cause Jack to do it? If they can influence things, why not unlock the door to let Jack in and murder the family so that he doesn't have to hack the door down? Why not help Jack in the maze by writing in the snow or leading him to Danny? That's the problem with supernatural stories or The Force by Episode 9. Why can these powers suddenly fail and be limited later? Why are they always just so story convenient?

-Like a lot of child protagonists, Danny sucks because he clams up. If he'd just tell what he knew or the visions he was getting, a lot of things would probably be figured out sooner and problems avoided altogether. Even Tony, whatever he may be, sucks and is no help.

-When Danny was cycling through the halls and the camera was following behind him, it reminded of me of 2001 and the famous shot of one of the astronauts jogging in a circle.

-When Danny hides in a steel kitchen cupboard, it reminded me of Jurassic Park and the kids hiding in the kitchen from the velociraptors. Of course, that came out much later than this but nowadays anyone could see these films out of chronological order like me.

-The bartender Lloyd seems to possibly be the devil. Jack says he'd sell his soul for a drink and there he is. Later, he says the drinks are taken care of and won't accept Jack's money. Just that The House has taken care of it sort of further implying that he's now in possession of Jack's soul (with the expectation he’ll kill his family). Yet, throwing in the Devil makes things even more muddled about motivations.

-The red bathroom scene has the previous caretaker say Jack has always been the caretaker and then the movie ends with a shot of him at a 1921 party. Ok....? I guess the movie's trying to be mysterious and disorient the viewer but I just see it as non-sensical and dismiss it like an obvious red herring in a murder mystery. Irrelevant.

-While writing this, I decided to look up Roger Ebert's review of it under his Great Movies section. He has a different take on the whole movie that doesn't get into what I was pondering. Maybe this is mentioned in the book or elsewhere but I was wondering if Jack also had The Shining. It makes the most sense to me. The head cook tells Danny that him and his mother had it and it wasn't until later that he realized others did. So, the shining could be genetic. Danny's mother obviously doesn't or at least there's no indication until the end when she can suddenly see ghosts in the hotel and the elevator pool of blood that Danny saw at the beginning. However, Jack is able to see many of the apparitions of the hotel. He has a dream of murdering his family sort of like how Danny sees the appearance and demise of the two daughters from the past murder. Yet, the ghost of the past caretaker says Danny has a great talent but does not indicate Jack has it or what that talent is.

-Visually, the movie is quite strong. The cinematography, the set design, and the music all work. Although, I have this thing with horror movies and honing in on the music as it tries to tap in and create unease with its sound and acknowledging to myself that what I’m seeing isn’t really scary but just the music trying to do some heavy lifting to make it that way. But I did like the chanting that was happening as Jack ran through the hedge maze. Like all these mad voices in his head driving him forward. So, I appreciate the movie on its technical aspects and it’s worth a watch on those. It’s just too bad the story wasn’t quite the slam dunk to make it a complete package.

-I thought running in the maze was a bad idea especially with fresh snow as one could just follow the path you create to catch up and that is what Jack is doing. Danny had the sense to realize this and create a sort of false path. I’m not sure a child in that situation would be that clever but I appreciated that the problem of footprints in the snow was considered and handled. At the same time, it should be obvious to Jack that he just needs to double back then as there is no way the footprints would stop but I can buy that at that point, he’s just too out of his mind to be thinking straight and would just continue on down a path in pursuit.

Guess that’s it. There might have been other things but I’ve typed enough and can’t think what else there may have been at this moment. I will say this about the movie: even though it frustrated me or was more comedic than it may have meant, I watch a lot of movies and they don’t motivate me to immediately talk about them or dissect them like this one did so I suppose there is something about it that makes it a bit greater than the sum of its parts.

Movies & TV / Khushrenada Annual List of Watched Movies
« on: January 04, 2021, 02:38:43 AM »
Maybe I'm the only one but I've been keeping a list of movies I've watched and adding to it every time I see a new one. While people are looking back at the games they played this year, I thought I'd bring up the movies that were watched this past year if you can remember them. (I'm amazed how quickly a film can pass from memory sometimes. There are occasions where I'm struggling to remember what I watched a couple days ago in order to add it to my list when I don't update it right away.)

For myself, it's another wide spectrum of films, both good and bad. Started the year off at theaters trying to stay on top of the Oscar nominees like 1917 or Jojo Rabbit and, boy, does that seem ages ago now. (I have no idea what's even going to be considered for the Oscars this year. In fact, I haven't even heard a thing about the Golden Globes and they usually happen around this time... :thinking emoji:) After that, it's been a wide mix of watching movies from TCM or other movie channels. When lockdown first hit from Covid, the cable company made a bunch of movie channels free to watch. (I guess in an effort to help keep people indoors.) So, I PVR'd a bunch and still have others to work through. After a downward trend in the numbers of new movies I watched compared to the past year that's been happening for 3 years now, 2020 saw a spike upwards and I went over 100 new films. I guess I found the time somehow.  :P  Anyway's here's the list:

Muriel's Wedding

Again, this doesn't cover seeing some movies I may have watched again for the whateverth time. Although, a lot of those were also just clicking on the TCM channel while they were in progress and then being sucked into watching them to the end. I see so many endings and so few beginnings sometimes.  :-\ How about you?

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Switch 2020 Statistics!
« on: December 22, 2020, 08:54:49 PM »
It's that time of year again! When Nintendo starts revealing some of the data they've been secretly compiling about us! Yaaaayyy......

So, what are the statics everyone is getting?

For myself, I'm.....

Some other info:

Total hours played: 402. In 2019, it was 134. Definitely did more Switch time this year although close to half of that time was for one game: XC:DE.

Number of games played: 18. In 2019, it was 15. Not a big jump there.

Most played games by hours: 1. XC:DE, 2. Tetris 99, 3. SNES Online, 4. Yooka-Laylee, 5. Technosphere. That last one surprises me. It was probably getting close to being surpassed by another game I'm playing now, Grim Fandago but it really illustrates to me what a drop-off occurs in the total time spent on a game from 4 - 5.

Last year my top 5 was Super Mario Odyssey, SNES Online, Tetris 99, Super Mario Party, Untitled Goose Game. Actually, I'm surprised Odyssey wasn't number 5 for me this year since I did spend a bit of time in Balloon World still. Just how much time did I spend on that crappy Technosphere?

As for playtime, I've got these twin towers of Jun and July at 108 and 114 respectively when I jumped into and became obessessed with XC:DE. After that, most months are low varying between 37 - 0 hours. Feb and Mar are both 0. The only other spike is November at 51 hours and I'm not sure why. I don't recall doing that much in November but maybe a whole bunch of things added up with out me realizing.

What's in your data?

Recently wrapped up:

Tosh.0 may have aired its last new episode a couple weeks ago unless it gets picked up on another channel.

General Chat / December is Mario 35th Anniversary Celebration Avatar Month!
« on: December 02, 2020, 12:50:54 AM »
Been meaning to do this a couple times and then we'd get into the month and I'd remember about it too late. Good thing pokepal started is Indie Month of December  ;D game thread to remind me it is the first of a month again. While Nintendo has been doing a lot of Mario stuff already, it just seems right that a Nintendo forum should also be joining in celebrating the man in red.  8) So, here's a chance to put on whatever Mario related avatar you choose, ugly or not, and give everyone's favorite go-karting hero a small salute. (Regular Birdo avatars do not count!  >:( )

Nintendo Gaming / Switch SNES Online: Now You're Playing with Khushrenada!
« on: November 17, 2020, 06:21:55 PM »
I've been meaning to set this up for awhile but I'm finally ready scheduling wise to do this pretty regularly. (I hope.) I'm not sure how many games or how much of the service others have used but I've been wanting to do get through more titles and arrange for more 2 player action with the games on it. I've made vague offers to play Kirby Super Star with Mop it up and Lost Levels with pokepal148 (although I'm not going to hold them to those games if they don't want to play them. But there's a lot more I'd be willing to meet up and play like the DKC games, Joe and Mac, Picross, Twin Bee, and more.

Are there other posters out there that want to get more SNES action happening? If so, jump in this thread and let me know. Tell me when you are free to play and what you want to play and let's start matching up and scheduling some play time. I'd like to make it so that it is a regular weekly meet-up but if it has to be a case by case time for availability then I'll do what I can to make that work also. We can try playing using the Nintendo Online Voice Chat app or do it over NWR's Discord as well.

For myself, I'm ready to make things work pretty much any night at or after 8:00 PM EST (although maybe not Thursday evenings) and on weekends I can probably be available even earlier from 2:00 PM EST. Personally, I'm looking to playing through the DKC games (preferably in VS mode) with some Mario's Super Picross mixed in but I'm open to other stuff as well like F-Zero racing, Mario Kart Battle Mode, Super Soccer or other games that user's who sign up may want to dabble in. Let's get N or get out!

Thanks to Insanolord dropping the forums on its head as he moved them to their new server home,  >:( , you may have noticed a lot of missing forum avatars. While I've had a few I've been able to dig up and apply from past traumas I've inflicted on these forums, there are many gaps in the icons I've got. Moreover, there are a lot of users who just around anymore so we can't rely on them to re-upload their avatars. Therefore, it will have to fall to those of us who remain to pick up the rubble of these Covid infested forums and correct the mistakes made by the "manager" of this "community".

I invite you to join me in helping give the NWR Forums some personality again by decorating the user profiles surrounding us and enshrined in old threads with avatars. How can you help out and be a part of this Beautification Committee? Well, if you can remember a user's avatar and find an image of it then please post it here and a mod here can update that profile with it. Or if you just want to give someone else an avatar of your own choosing then good enough and I'll upload that onto their profile as well. Who cares at this point? This forums should only be operated after heavily drinking anyways.  ;)  8)

So, use this thread as the N.B.C.'s HQ and dump off your submissions here. Together, we can make these forums great worse sadder funnier a bigger mistake than they've ever been before!

General Gaming / Meanwhile, Over At The Other Developers...
« on: April 28, 2020, 02:29:37 PM »
Thought about resurrecting the old "Sony Getting Hit Hard Lately" thread but they're only partially involved. Seems to me that it would be more prudent to start a different thread highlighting some of the news from the competition of non-Nintendo developers. As much as Nintendo fans will complain about the products from Nintendo such as not having all the Pokemon in Sword and Shield or making Metroid Prime: Federation Force, there's a lot more crap happening on the other side of the fence. Lootboxes, unfinished products, Cooking Mama: Cookstar and more have contributed to a lot of developers looking pretty cruddy these days.

The latest disaster comes from Naughty Dog. Over the weekend, someone working on The Last of Us 2 decided to leak a lot of info and the game and spoil the major story beats. This has caused Naughty Dog to announce that they will be releasing the game very soon now in June. Meanwhile, the leak seems to have caused a pretty negative reaction from those who've read the details and the hype for the game seems to be deflating fast. As for why the leak was done, I haven't seen anything confirming it but it seems to be from a disgruntled employee (is there ever any other kind in a situation like this) who is either upset at Naughty Dog with-holding or taking their time in paying their staff, upset at the crunch-time of development, upset at the direction of the game and story and cancel-culture in Naughty Dog or all of the above.

The crunch time on Last of Us 2 development has already been reported on earlier and the article ended with this tidbit:

Quote
Yet there are also those developers, some of whom still work at Naughty Dog today, who say that there’s a part of them that actually wishes this game would fail. A critical flop might help show Naughty Dog that this isn’t the best way to make games, that this level of sacrifice isn’t necessary, that maybe the project isn’t worth losing all of these people. That perhaps, no matter how many Game of the Year nominations they win or how high their Metacritic scores climb, all the individual hairs on Joel’s eyebrows or the grains of sand in a burlap sack just aren’t worth the cost.

Welp, there's a good chance they may get their wish. However, with the way this has been leaked, I'm not sure the takeaway will be less crunch time so who knows how the fallout of this will play out. Jason Schreier, who wrote the Naughty Dog crunch story, posted this on Twitter yesterday: "Just catching up on this Naughty Dog story and man, no matter how angry you are about your workplace conditions or your pay or whatever else, leaking your whole game just hurts all the other people who were in the trenches with you. So many better ways to channel that rage". True enough.

What a mess.

Nintendo Gaming / Best of the 3DS eShop: 2013 Releases (Part 2)
« on: April 17, 2020, 11:28:57 AM »
The Usual Preamble

With the 3DS pretty much winding down and a lack of upcoming releases we have now arrived at the life cycle of a system where users start looking back in the catalogue of available games that were released and that they missed or forgot about when games were coming out regularly. For myself, I know that I didn't always pay as close attention to the eShop and its releases as I did physical releases. And while I have accumulated a few titles from it, I feel there are probably more I should take advantage of especially since Nintendo hasn't created any other source to purchase many of these titles.

While I could I slowly go through each title and try to track down reviews, I'd rather get the opinions of the NWR Forum users whose gaming tastes I trust a bit more. Plus, I figured this would be a chance to engage in our favorite practice of reminiscing about games we loved playing (and arguing about the worth / rank of a game. ;) )

The main goal is simple. If you have personally played any of these titles, post which ones you have and which ones you highly recommend others should have on their 3DS, which ones might be recommended for Kairon (or a deeper cut for a certain type of fan) and what you think should be skipped. (And sure, even if you haven't played them and have an opinion, I'm not going to argue against you from posting it). I've also included a poll for people to vote on the games being discusses that they think a person should acquire for their 3DS.

What Is Being Discussed?

I am trying to go through the eShop exclusives in chronological order at this point. To do that, I'm just going by the release dates on Nintendo's website for eShop games.

There are about 119 games or so that came out for the eShop in 2013 if you are not including VC releases and certain applications. I've divided up those 2013 releases in 4 parts. Incredibly, according to Nintendo's site, by the time of Kokuga's release, we've passed into July. The rest of the entries in Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 all came out in the second half of 2013. The 3DS eShop was just exploding in releases at this time. That said, quantity doesn't exactly equate to quality. In some ways, the eShop is beginning to remind me of the Wii-era complaints of shovelware titles. Sure, there is still good stuff to be found but it can be lost and hard to find among all the other titles of varying quality.

The list of titles up for discussion for Part 2 are:

Gummy Bears Mini Golf
Picross e
Shining Force: Sword of Hayja
Big Bass Arcade: No Limit
Mighty Switch Force 2
BUGS vs TANKS!
Urban Trial Freestyle
Spelunker
Crystal Warriors
Gabrielle's Ghostle Groove Mini
Kokuga
Crash City Mayhem
G-LOC Air Bttle
Vampire Master of Darkness
Fishdom H20: Hidden Odyssey
Deer Hunting King
Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale
Undead Bowling
Robot Rescue 3D
Chain Blaster
Angler's Club: Ultimate Bass Fishing 3D
Picross E2
Bike Rider DX
My Farm 3D
Family Kart 3D
SteamWorld Dig
Tangram Style
Smash Bowling 3D
Heavy Fire: Black Arms 3D

Which games do you think are worthy of being added to one's collection and played? Are there any overlooked gems you might be aware of?

Long before users were allowed to give themselves whatever custom title they desired ( >:(), there was one spot of a person's profile that they were allowed to customize and make all their own. With the Self-Destruction sequence activated, MASB, aka Motherbrain And Space Bartender, immediately turned its full attention to the threat at hand. Using the circuity that was running throughout the Space Pirate base of operations, Mother Brain was able to quickly identify the threat of Dark Samus and its location. It began issuing orders to the remaining Space Pirates on how to track Dark Samus down. In the meantime, Dark Samus had broken through a cracked wall at the end of the pathway it followed and entered the Command Center. The glowing Crystalline Structure was giving light to the room in a way the closely resembled moonlight. Dark Samus began walking towards it in order to find the rift it had come through and leave. Suddenly, there was a loud rush of wind. Dark Samus stopped and began scanning around to locate the source. From above, a pair of glowing red eyes appeared and they immediately grew in size as they rushed towards Dark Samus. D.S. fired a couple blasts of Phazon but was a bit off the mark. The shots only illuminated the figure rushing towards D.S. letting it know that it was Ridley! With a tremendous impact, Ridley knocked Dark Samus across the room and into a wall while also snatching the Metroid away from it.

““I fooled you, I fooled you, I got pig iron the metroid, I got pig iron the metroid, I got allll pig iron the metroid,” Mecha-Ridley-Programmed-By-Lucario cried out as he then made a bigger hole from the one which Dark Samus had used to enter the room. Then he flew off down the corridor back to Kraid’s Lair to end the self-destruct. He passed a couple Space Pirates on the way and told them that Dark Samus was all theirs.

“Oi. Unbelievable,” the Space Pirate called RABicle said, “You see that, mate? Once again, the higher-ups here only want the easy jobs of transporting a Metroid while we have to do the actual hard work of eliminating the real threats. How much you wanna bet as to how much he’s getting paid to carry that Metroid around compared to what we’re earning by putting our lives on the line?”

The Space Pirate that Rabicle was talking to, Nickmitch, answered, “I hear you. You’re absolutely goddamn right. The Space Pirates were created to oppose the Federation but lately the whole thing is becoming too bureaucratic with ineffective leaders at the top. Look how many Space Pirates have died these past few days.”

The two Space Pirates entered the Command Center. Dark Samus was struggling to move toward the Crystalline Structure because its body was falling apart. The synthetic Phazon it had taken from the Omega Pirate was having a strange effect on its chemical makeup and actually causing its body to war within itself. The result was that Dark Samus seemed to be melting as it used all its remaining strength to leave.

The two Space Pirates took in the sight of Dark Samus’s struggles. Then they turned their heads to face each other, gave each other a nod and then turned their heads back to Dark Samus as they took out their laser rifles.

“And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you,” shouted nickmitch as the two Space Pirates began to fire furiously at Dark Samus. The laser fire began spattering bits of Dark Samus all over the room. The bits would then began to solidify and dry up. Soon, the room was covered in splotches of dried Phazon. The inbalance of real and synthetic Phazon had prevented Dark Samus from being able to reform and thus ended its existence.

“Nice speech, comrade,” RABicle remarked after it was over.

“I been sayin' that **** for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass,” nickmitch explained.

“When is that corrupt bourgeois pig Ridley going to shut off this alarm already?” RABicle asked in annoyance.

Suddenly there was crackling of static and then Mother Brain’s voice rang out through the intercom system. “Attention! Space Pirates RABicle and nickmitch. Please proceed down Corrider 3-X5 to assist Commander Ridley. It appears he has gotten stuck while returning the Metroid to Kraid’s Lair. I’m afraid he can’t enter because he’s too big,” Mother Brain reported. Woo! I got a "Ridley's too big" joke in after all. Bet you didn't see that coming. High five!

“Unbelievable. This is just want I’ve been saying, comrade. Just because someone is actually large in size doesn’t mean they are bigger than anyone else here. No one should be getting a larger slice of profits because of their physical size. It should be about the contribution to the effort,” RABicle argued as they headed off to help Ridley.

Sometime later after the self-destruct sequence was turned off and the Space Pirates were gathered in Mother Brain’s Chamber, Mother Brain made the announcement that because of the great victory they had in repelling the Federation and Hunters, the Space Pirates would now be unionized and all would get an equal share of the profits as well as an incredibly generous health and dental program. The fact that this was possible because a whole bunch of Space Pirates had died in the fight thereby creating a smaller pool to divide this among was not mentioned. The Space Pirates, except for Ridley who was taking a big cut in pay from this news, began to celebrate. That celebration was short lived as all around them the Space Pirate Base of Operations and planet began to change with different elements appearing and disappearing. Suddenly, it was all gone and the Space Pirates were on the surface of the planet. Not only that, they were surrounded by thousands and thousands of Metroids which immediately attacked them and began sucking away their life force. It was an instant wipe out of the Space Pirates. It turns out that killing Dark Samus and preventing it from going back to the timeframe it had emerged from altered the timeline resulting in this dark future where the entire galaxy had begun to be overrun by Metroids who had begun evolving into incredibly resilient and deadly species. Soon all planets were infested with them and they were the only life remaining. With the conquest of the galaxy completed, it was now finally at peace.

The End.

The last Federation Trooper, Stratos, was desperate to find someway out of the Space Pirates catacomb lair. He knew the way back to the surface of the planet but the path was heavily guarded and his suit was running out of power. Still, he decided to chance using his Shinespark mod one more time to get away. His suit hummed from the potential energy build-up and then he took off like a shot. And then his suit shuddered and shut down as it lost all energy and the sudden drop in power caused him to loudly smash into a wall. The noise awoke Kraid and he was getting angry at yet another disturbance keeping him from sleep. He stomped to where Stratos was under siege from Space Pirate fire and threw a couple troopers across the distance of the cavern to get around the barricade Stratos set up. Realizing he had no cover and not wanting to get possibly tortured or die a horrific death like his other Federation Force buddies, he turned his laser gun on himself and ended the Federation mission in defeat. "That better be the last one and the end of this crap," Kraid roared angrily and began to head back to his lair.

In between the fight of the Space Pirates and Federation Trooper, Dark Samus had been attracted to the noise of the firefight and Pirate screams. Coming up behind the Pirate forces, Dark Samus felt an odd connection to an Omega Pirate that was blasting off large bursts of energy from some kind of weapon unit on its back. It felt like there was Phazon emanating from the Omega Pirate and yet there was something different about it. Needing to recharge itself in some way, Dark Samus dissolved into a Phazon puddle and flowed over to the Omega Pirate. Dark Samus then created a tentacle arm which it wrapped around a leg of the Omega Pirate and began sucking out the synthetic Phazon that was flowing in the Omega Pirate's bloodstream. The loss of synthetic Phazon was having an effect on the Omega Pirate and he was beginning to experience problems with his senses and nervous system. Looking down, he saw the Dark Samus pool at his feet and the tentacle from it that was draining.  He began kicking away from Dark Samus and stomping at the ground. Realizing it had been discovered, Dark Samus began oozing across the battlefield to get away from the Omega Pirate's attention. The Omega Pirate, realizing there was another threat in the pirate's midst began to fire at the moving dark puddle. Due to the trouble with the Omega Pirate's muscle strength and eyesight from the Phazon loss, his aim was no longer that sharp and he began blasting around the other Space Pirates that were firing at Stratos. It got worse when he blew apart his longtime Space Pirate pal and mentor, Luigi Dude. "Insanolord has gone nuts," the other pirates yelled as they ran for cover. Insanolord tried to speak to tell them what was wrong and actually going on but he just couldn't form words and only convinced the other Space Pirates that he must have lost his mind. "We need to take him down," they yelled and began firing on him. Weakened from the loss of Phazon, the Omega Pirate's body couldn't withstand the blows of laser fire hitting him from all directions. He fell to the ground and could only watch as Dark Samus reformed itself and left the area before his vision went dark and he was dead.

After the battle, Kraid had returned to his lair, still cranky from all the irregular sleeping he had endured these past few days. He tossed and turned to get his body and grassy bed just right and finally closed his eyes to try and fall back asleep. He was still grumbling about the lousy Federation Forces always making things miserable for everyone and how he couldn't wait until Mother Brain's plan was finished and the Federation finally destroyed. Yet, there was something else still bothering him and keeping him from sleeping. It was like there was some kind of breeze or movement in front of... his... face. Kraid suddenly opened his eyes. There, floating in front of him, was Dark Samus. Dark Samus had followed Kraid back to his lair after the battle. "Oh crap," Kraid began to say as he realized he was caught unprepared for this. But, when opening his mouth, Dark Samus flew right into it and then unleashed a powerful Phazon blast through the roof of his mouth and head. Then Dark Samus went down Kraid's gullet blasting away through all sides before creating a new hole in its large belly and emerging from that. Kraid's lifeless body deflated and sprawled out completely limp. He now had all the sleep he could get in his eternal rest.

Dark Samus then investigated Kraid's Lair. It discovered a nearby computer from which Kraid seemed to be posting on the Universal Holo-web as some kind of person named Adam. Probably trying to catfish someone. The computer also showed a pathway from Kraid's Lair to another entrance into the Command Center with the crystalline structure. Escape from this world may finally be possible. Even better was the fact that there was a living Metroid encased in glass beside the computer. The perfect parting gift after all the trouble Dark Samus had been experiencing. It grabbed the Metroid and headed for the Command Center. Except Dark Samus had not deactivated the alarm system before moving the Metroid. By taking it, Dark Samus had just set-off a self destruct sequence for the entire Space Pirate operation and the planet itself. If the Space Pirates couldn't have the Metroid then no one could was their thinking in creating this system. As the warning blasted throughout the Pirate base, all Pirates were now on the hunt to eliminate Dark Samus and recapture the Metroid before it was too late.

The hunt is on!

Needing to turn the tide of battle the Federation Forces decided to try and take the fight to Kraid and remove him from the battlefield. As they approached Kraid's Lair, they ran into a lot of Space Pirates resulting in a bunch of firefights as they moved from room to room trying to get closer. All the laser shooting and missile blasting was beginning to become a great nuisance to Kraid, however, as it echoed around in his chamber. Upset at being unable to laze about in his grassy bed, he finally got ticked off enough to head on out and shut things down himself. Bursting onto the scene, he knocked back some Pirates in order to fire from a different location that would make less sound. Then he turned to the nearest Federation officer he could see and let a rip some stomach farts to blast off a bunch of his belly spikes at the officer. With nowhere to turn, the Federation Commando was completely impaled and squashed against a wall as the spikes tore into him. Seeing the death of the Commando and realizing he was now alone against these forces, the remaining Trooper ran away for his life, as a panic built up inside of him wondering how soon until he would end up dead like the Commando Mr. Bungle.

Meanwhile, Dark Samus had been looking for a way to return to the crystalline structure and had been searching through the labyrinth catacombs that surrounded it in the hopes of finding another way back to it. Having heard some distant drilling, Dark Samus followed the sound and came upon some Space Pirates digging a new tunnel to reach the crystalline command structure again. One pirate was operating a large digging machine as the others guided it and worked alongside it to keep it moving through the surrounding rock. With all the noise, the pirates did not hear Dark Samus approaching them. Dark Samus proceeded to blast the nearest Space Pirate and eliminated him. The Pirate had a missile weapon which intrigued Dark Samus. It took the missile upgrade and began trying to merge it to work with its Phazon body structure. Blasting the nearest Space Pirate had alerted the others to the presence of Dark Samus especially with some of that Pirate's limbs blowing by them as they disintegrated.

Seeing their brother-in-arms ShyGuy now dead, the Pirates scrambled to get weapons in order to return fire. The Space Pirate operating the digging machine, Mop it up, decided to swivel the giant cutting blades to face Dark Samus and eliminate it with them. Seeing the machine approaching it, Dark Samus instead dropped down the Power Bomb it had recently acquired and melted into a pile of Phazon goo to hide in some of the holes and cracks of the area. The rest of the Pirates fled from the area on seeing the Power Bomb. However, for Mop it up, the machine was too slow to move away to just drive away and by the time she got down from the machine to run from the scene, the Power Bomb blew up, vaporizing her and the machine. Dark Samus then reformed itself and began inspecting the damage. A large part of the area by the machine had been blown away from the Power Bomb exposing an odd statue. Dark Samus approached it and began examining it. On getting close, the Statue suddenly burst from the wall and began moving on its own. Dark Samus began blasting away at the Statue to destroy but, even as chunks of it blew away, it still kept getting closer. It began taking swipes at Dark Samus and the speed of its arms was able to knock off chunks of Phazon from Dark Samus, flinging it onto the nearby walls. Dark Samus decided to go for a more direct approach and flew into the air then race into the exposed circuitry of the Torizo Statue and melded its Phazon body around the inner core thereby corrupting and causing it to overload and explode.

For awhile, there was silence in the area but then from the Phazon pool beneath the wreckage of the Torizo Statue, Dark Samus slowly reformed itself. After getting itself back together, it took another moment to check out the area again. It found the Missile item it had tried to integrate earlier.Dark Samus had dropped it earlier when hiding from the Power Bomb since it wasn't made of Phazon like itself. Now, that missile item had been destroyed. The head of the Torizo Statue had landed on it, which crushed the missiles making them unusable. Seeing nothing else of value for it to take or exploit, Dark Samus moved on from the area to keep searching for a way back to the Crystalline Structure. It was also feeling more anxious to return to it after this latest battle. Not being able to feel a connection to the planet Phaaze and having no closeby pools of Phazon for it to regenerate in, Dark Samus was noticing and experiencing a feeling of its body growing weaker and more unstable the longer it was in this world and using up its energy in battle.

Tired of getting attacked by the Federation, the Space Pirates wanted to take the fight to them and found their base of operations. The Pirates sent out wave after wave of troops but the Federation's superior weapon technology allowed them to stay hunkered in their position and keep surviving the siege. The Pirates decided they needed to do something else to break this battle stalemate. Thus, the order was given to bring out the big gun Kraid to storm on the scene and shake things up. Kraid, however, isn't a big fan of orders or being told when to fight. In a foul mood, he headed to the battle. The combatants suddenly felt a great growing rumbling from the Earth. The force was so great that everyone was knocked down to their feet and knocked around. Suddenly there was a huge explosion as Kraid burst on the scene.

He let out a mighty roar and then smashed his giant claws on the battle scene raining terror and destruction across the battlefield. His mighty blows changed the field of battle and many fell upon Federation Marine Stevey killing him. "Happy now?" Kraid roared and then returned back down into the crater he had created and disappeared. As the combatants recovered from the mighty display of power, they no longer had much fight in them and all retreated back to secure locations.

As the Federation Forces began their search for a new base, they ran into a different foe, Dark Samus. Confused at first by thinking it was Samus Aran having somehow survived her gunship explosion, the leader of the forces, The Deleter, tried to see if he could trick Samus into letting down her guard so they could escape or take her down now. He got close to Dark Samus who stood silently watching them. He stabbed her thinking he landed a mortal blow only to realize something didn't feel right about the strike. Pulling out the blade, he saw Phazon attached to it. Although greatly confused by how Dark Samus could be here with Phaaze having been destroyed, the Forces suddenly realized who they were actually dealing with and realized they need to fall back. Unfortunately, the Deleter had gotten in too close to Dark Samus and he knew he wouldn't be able to get away safely. He threw his dog tags to the other soldiers and told them to report his death in to their military command. He then began fighting Dark Samus to hold her back so the other soldiers could escape. It wasn't much of a fight. Dark Samus powered up and blasted The Deleter with a powerful Phazon burst killing him. The other Federation troops escaped and reported their losses into command. From the dogtags, they discovered The Deleter was TheFleece and he had left his men his K.K. Vinyl Collection as part of his last will and testament.
