TalkBack / New Powers, World Map Unveiled for Super Mario 3D World
« on: October 01, 2013, 10:20:32 AM »

Cherries and an ice skating shoe, what else can you ask for?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35583

New powers, and the newly designed world map for Super Mario 3D World were revealed during this morning's Nintendo Direct presentation.

Several new power ups were shown in the video presentation. A new cherry item can be picked up to duplicate your character. Instead of now controlling one Mario, you can control 2, 3, 4, or more. Mario also hopped into a shoe which glided across the ice during the presentation. Mario utilized other objects in the game such as a baseball and a missile launcher.

A new world map was also shown that abandons the recent 2D level screen. Instead of simply walking across a preset line, Mario can wonder around the world map and select any of the available levels.

Super Mario 3D World is set to release in North America on November 22.

The Wii U eShop gets some love this week with even more downloadable titles.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35350

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and Spot the Differences: Party! are heading to the Wii U eShop this Thursday, September 5.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams has been available on other platforms for some time now and even made its way to the European eShop last month. The game, a sequel to Giana Sisters DS, initially began as a Kickstarter campaign last year.

Sanuk Games has developed several Spot the Difference titles over the past few years. Spot the Differences: Party! is the next title from the developer to follow in that same style. The game is set to launch in both North America and Europe at a price of $5 and €5, respectively.

Both titles will launch on the Wii U eShop alongside the delayed D&D game, which was also announced to release this week.

The Japanese RPG we have been waiting for will come with all of the refinements when it arrives.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35352

When Bravely Default: Flying Fairy makes its way to Western audiences at some point in the future, we will be receiving the updated version of the game, Bravely Default: For the Sequel, according to the Bravely Default Twitter account.

Bravely Default: For the Sequel takes the original Bravely Default and refines some of its mechanics. Some of these changes include updates to the battle system, interface improvements and additional story events. The Western release will also include the option to hear the original Japanese audio as well.

While Bravely Default: For the Sequel is scheduled to release in Japan later this year, the North American version of the game won't be released until 2014. The European release however is still expected before the end of the year.

@Shyguy

Copperhead has been around since the 60's, but always has shown up as a male character. The new 52 recently changed the villain into a female and this game appears to be doing the same.

TalkBack / New Assassin Joins Cast of Batman: Arkham Origins
« on: July 18, 2013, 10:51:20 PM »

Batman will also sport some sweet new skins.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34971

Long time Batman villain Copperhead will join previously revealed assassins Deathstroke, Deadshot, and Bane during the hunt for Batman in this years Batman: Arkham Origins.

Revealed by WB Games today, Copperhead will show up not as the familiar male antagonist in a snake suit that has been around since late 60's, but rather as a quick and agile female. A female Copperhead was also recently introduced in DC's New 52.

WB Games also revealed two new suits that Arkham Origins' Batman will be able to wear. A Batman One Million suit will be available, but it was not revealed as to how it would be unlocked. A Worst Nightmare Batman skin was also shown off and will be unlocked after nearly everything else in the game has been completed.

While talking about the possible appearance of Robin or Batgirl, WB Games also revealed that Robin will be absent from the game. Arkham Origins takes place during the second year of Batman's career, so Robin does not yet exist. As for Batgirl, WB Games teased that players will have to wait and see how she may be handled.

Batman: Arkham Origins releases October 25 on the Wii U.

TalkBack / Namco Bandai Registers Three New Tales Series Trademarks
« on: July 18, 2013, 10:27:37 PM »

Will these ever exist and come to Wii U?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34972

Namco Bandai has filed for three different "Tales of" trademarks in Japan, according to the website, Hachima Kiko.

The three trademarks, Tales of Zestoria, Tales of Creales and Tales of Catastora all represent possible new entries in the Tales series. The last entry in the series to show up on a Nintendo platform was the 3DS remake of Tales of the Abyss.

Namco has yet to show interest in bringing the Tales series to any of the next generation consoles. One or all of these trademarks may be the entry in the series to now make the jump. However, as some of Namco's previous "Tales of" trademarks never resulted in anything, there is no promise that these will even result in a game.

40 returning levels will greet you when starting up Rayman Legends.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34937

The 40 returning levels will be available right out of the box, and can be completed at any time. There are a variety of stages included, all of which have been graphically updated to match Legends' style.

Kung Foot will turn you against your friends in a competitive game of soccer. Players will push, kick, and punch the ball around the small stage trying to score goals against the opposing team. The mode was originally made at the completion of Rayman Origins for the developers to have fun with in their office.

TalkBack / Nintendo Contemplated Bringing Next Zelda Game to E3 2013
« on: June 11, 2013, 07:40:25 PM »

We got a look at Wind Waker HD, but a sneak peek of Link's newest outing could have happened.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34575

Nintendo had considered bringing Wii U's next Zelda game to E3 this year according to Shigeru Miyamoto while talking with Game Informer.

The idea of showing the game, which Miyamoto claims is further along in development than many thought, at E3 this year was being tossed around by Nintendo.

Miyamoto said "We're also working on a new Wii U Zelda game. Work on that is progressing fairly concretely. In fact, we were thinking about showing it here at E3 but decided to wait just a little bit longer before sharing it with everyone."

Although the game won't be shown this week, we can probably look forward to hearing about it in the near future.

TalkBack / Staff Sez: Which Wii U VC Game Are You Most Excited to Play
« on: April 25, 2013, 03:10:25 PM »

Our staff decides which of the upcoming games they will sink their time into.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/34024

As all of our Staff Sezs begin, we prompted the entire staff with a question. With the Wii U Virtual Console set to launch tomorrow, it only seemed fitting to find out which games everyone would be picking up. Would the staff pick up a new title, continue playing last month's featured release, or skip this special event all together? To find out what everyone would do, we asked the staff:

Which Wii U VC Game Are You Most Excited to Play?

Check out all of their responses below, you may even be able to figure out which game is the clear favorite.

Patrick "Trick" Barnett:
Super Mario World so I can finally collect all of the Dragon Coins.

Neal "Game Exploiter" Ronaghan:
I need to play Super Mario World long enough to at least get to the Forest of Illusion 1-UP trick.

Carmine "Kiddy Kong" Red:
Donkey Kong Jr. Someone needs to rescue Donkey Kong AND all the VC games Nintendo is holding prisoner with him.

Tyler "Dead Yoshi" Ohlew:
Super Mario World: Have I played it to death, and again with its corpse? Absolutely. On the GamePad with my soaps on the TV? NOPE!

J.P. "The P stands for Poor Taste" Corbran:
I'm giving LTTP another chance; why not Mario World too?

Guillaume "Joker" Veillette:
I can't choose. I'm excited to play all of the obscure releases in the launch line-up.

Andy "Looks on the Bright Side" Goergen:
I find nothing to look forward to about the launch lineup, except for that it means that soon there will be a better lineup.

Jonathan "Not This Week" Metts:
Nothing from this launch lineup. I already have the ones I want on VC.

Jon "Not Sure If Serious" Lindemann:
I'm buying a Wii U specifically for Balloon Fight.

Justin "Multiplicity" Berube:
I'm not looking forward to any of these titles since I own them all on multiple formats already.

Zack "Not Falling For That Crap" Kaplan:
I would play Kirby but owning it a fourth time seems kind of silly. (>'-')>

Zach "Four Way" Miller:
I guess I'll keep playing Kirby's Adventure. I own it three or four ways now.

Alex "Dirty Pirate" Culafi:
I don't get excited about ROMs, official or not.

Nicholas "Wistful" Bray:
I'd have to say the only one I will probably download is Super Mario World. I hope for regular updates.

Danny "Is In Japan And Therefore Has A Way Better Launch Lineup on Wii U VC, Jerk" Bivens:
Super Mario World. I already own something like 5 copies. Why not a sixth in Japanese?

TalkBack / Nintendo Not Hosting 'Large-Scale' Presentation at E3 2013
« on: April 24, 2013, 10:55:01 PM »

Nintendo is aiming to host several smaller events in place of a large one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34006

Nintendo revealed during their financial results briefing that at this year's E3, the company plans to host several smaller events in lieu of a large presentation.

During the event, Nintendo Satoru Iwata explained "Unlike previous years, we will not have a large-scale [E3] presentation directed to everyone in the world. Instead, we are planning several smaller events focusing on software for America. Among these hands-on events will be one for American distributors and another for western media."

During E3 2012 Nintendo held other meetings as well as their large presentation. This year, the company is striving to be different and announce all of their new software through the smaller events.

TalkBack / Web-Based Miiverse Available Now
« on: April 24, 2013, 09:45:29 PM »

Enjoy Miiverse on your PC starting right now.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34002

Nintendo has now made the web-based Miiverse service available to all Nintendo Network users. The release of the service came during Nintendo's financial results briefing.

Upon signing into your account, you are greeted with options to visit your activity feed, your own profile, your notifications, and the various communities. You can access all of your favorite communities and even comment on other Miiverse posts.

Currently, you are unable to do the following in the web version of Miiverse; these functions are only available on Wii U:
・ Create a new account
・ Make new posts in a community
・ Create handwritten posts and comments
・ Send and receive messages
・ Send and receive friend requests
・ Follow/Unfollow users
・ Edit profiles

The application appears to use OAuth, an open login standard, which could hint at support for logging into other sites using a Nintendo Network ID in the future.

This web-based Miiverse was made available ahead of the major Wii U system update currently scheduled to arrive later this week. Nintendo is currently referring to the browser-accessible Miiverse as a Beta, suggesting that they are still actively working on this new aspect of their social network.

TalkBack / Witch's Cat Review
« on: April 24, 2013, 02:53:37 PM »

The cat's out of the bag - Witch's Cat is hard.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/33999

Witch’s Cat is best described as a frustrating puzzle game. While the presentation remains relatively simple, each and every level is devious. With vague puzzles, Witch’s Cat will only appeal to masochistic puzzle fans.

I don’t consider myself a puzzle game savant, but I have played enough of the genre to know that Witch’s Cat is harder than most. It is the first title to have stumped me completely, leaving me no choice but to turn to guides for nearly every stage. Beginning in the second world, the levels become intricate and solutions often require knowledge of game mechanics you simply haven't learned yet. The game teaches the basics in early stages, but neglects to show the advanced techniques needed later. Witch’s Cat offers little in the way of hints and provides no way for you to get past a spot you are simply stuck at.

The main protagonist, Alicia, can use magic and transform into a cat. These abilities are varied to the point where you can get around levels in more than one way. This alleviates some of the frustration of puzzle solving, but also brings about a whole new problem. Each level limits the amount of magic Alicia can cast, creating a secondary objective. Not only must she make it to the exit, but you must also manage the magic points allotted at the start of the stage so that the final puzzle-solving spell can be cast. This layers additional difficulty over what already was proving quite a challenge.

Thankfully, the game looks and plays great. The tight control system makes you feel completely in command. When you make a mistake, you know it was your fault and not the game’s. The game’s sprites look great in both 2D and 3D, and unlike some 3DS games, it looks far superior with the 3D effect turned up.

Witch’s Cat is brutally difficult, and frankly too much for me to handle. While I cried my way through several of the levels, I came to find that the game is well designed, but severely lacking in explanation. With a hint system, or maybe even the ability to skip levels, Witch’s Cat may be more approachable, but without those, most people should steer clear.

Nintendo reports a small net profit after last year's larger loss.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33995

The latest Nintendo financial results revealed the company has returned to profitability. Nintendo posted a 7.09 billion yen (around $71 million) net income for the fiscal year ending March 2013. This small net gain follows last year's net loss of 43 billion yen (around $430 million).

While the company posted a profit, their number fell short of the 14 billion yen net income prediction made at the end of January. The increased operating loss may have been the cause of Nintendo's failure to reach their income prediction. The 20 billion yen operation loss predicted in January became a 36 billion yen loss (around $360 million). The increase in this number was attributed to weak sales of both the 3DS and Wii U.

The Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide as of the end of the fiscal year. At the end of 2012, Nintendo had already sold 3.06 million units of their newest home console. This means that throughout the first three months of 2013, only 390,000 Wii Us were sold worldwide.

The Nintendo 3DS on the other hand has managed to sell 13.95 million units of hardware in this fiscal year. 7.78 million of those units came in the form of the 3DS XL, which was released in North America last August. Nintendo is currently forecasting another 18 million 3DS sales in the coming fiscal year.

TalkBack / Aliens: Colonial Marines Canceled on Wii U
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:20:18 PM »

Less than two months after the other console releases, Aliens is canned on Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33762

The Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines has been canceled, a Sega representative told IGN.

The Playstation and Xbox versions of Aliens launched in early February. While many were heavily anticipating the title, the final product was panned by reviewers and consumers alike. Until now, Sega, the game's publisher, was unable to confirm nor deny rumors that the Wii U project had been scrapped.

A Sega representative talking with IGN today provided the following statement: "Sega can confirm that the Wii U sku of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development."

Aliens: Colonial Marines was initially scheduled for a Q1 release in North America.

Another DS game shows up on the project funding service.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33754

Developed by Island Officials, Orion's Odyssey: A Pattern Blocks Adventure can now be backed through the game's official Kickstarter page.

Orion's Odyssey is a Nintendo DS game that is the spiritual successor to the puzzle game Hands On! Tangrams. The game takes familiar characters and concepts from its predecessor, improving upon them through the feedback the developer received. Island Officials has had trouble finding a publisher willing to support their game and has now turned to Kickstarter for the funds.

A publisher is willing to release the game physically, but only if Island Officials covers all the costs of the game's production. To do this, the developer is attempting to raise $85,412 by May 19. As of this writing more than $4,000 has already been raised. Orion's Odyssey is already complete, so if the project is funded, no more development time will be necessary.

Check out the Kickstarter video below.

TalkBack / Pandora's Tower Release Date Set for North America
« on: April 03, 2013, 02:10:26 PM »

The last of the three Operation Rainfall games is almost here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33737

Pandora's Tower is set to release across North America on April 16, according to XSEED Games via their official Twitter account.

Pandora's Tower was one of three games that fans fought hard to bring to North America over the last two years. Following 2012's releases of Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story, XSEED Games announced earlier this year that they were publishing Pandora's Tower in North America. While no official release date had been given, an April release was expected. On April 16, North American gamers will finally be able to experience the last of the Operation Rainfall titles.

In Pandora's Tower, players control Aeron, a man on a quest to save his cursed friend Elena. Throughout the game you will explore towers, defeat monsters, and try to save your friend. Read Andrew's review for more details.

TalkBack / Etrian Odyssey IV: Legend of the Titan Review
« on: March 30, 2013, 09:38:27 AM »

An un-FOE-gettable game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/33696

Between its punishing difficulty and consequences for death, players not fond of a slow, arduous grind in their RPGs typically looked away from the Etrian Odyssey series. Etrian Odyssey IV advances the dungeon mapping formula, making newcomers feel more welcome, while still retaining much of what the series is known for. The game has its missteps, but still remains one of the best 3DS RPGs to date.

In Etrian Odyssey IV, a casual mode relieves the extreme challenge the dungeon mapping series is known for, and the game is stronger for it. With the ability to switch the difficulty whenever you are back in the hub town, it is easy to choose the mode right for you. This leniency alleviates the headache of leveling up characters after losing progress from dying, and keeps the newest entry a challenging and accessible adventure.

Etrian Odyssey IV tells its story through the guild of explorers you control. You select the classes and looks of your team through a relatively unsophisticated character building menu. However, the variation between classes makes each shine. From the onset of the game, you can compose a team of characters with classes as disparate as an archer and a dancer. Despite your work, though, these unique figures never receive a larger role in the story.

The exclusion of your party members from the story is only one contributing factor to a failed narrative. The game introduces few characters, and those it does act only as talking points around the hub town. With so large a scope for your overall mission, the amount of storytelling and interaction with others seems inadequate. While the lack of story support is disappointing, Etrian Odyssey IV more than makes up for it with its adventurous tone.

This quality is most apparent when you set to the skies in your airship. The game’s vast overworld is littered with enemies, collectible resources, explorable dungeons, and many other opportunities for adventure. While you have the option to jump right into dungeons from town after first visiting them, there are plenty of reasons to take the long road. Exploration rewards you with a more complete map, helping you better navigate to the next cave or labyrinth. You can pick up fetch quests from friendly characters that roam the skies. However, unlike dungeons, these don’t require as much hands-on mapping.

Mapping dungeons may seem like a chore, but the task is intrinsically addictive. Watching your paths interlock as you venture deeper into labyrinths is especially rewarding. Etrian Odyssey IV doesn’t just limit your options, either; it provides several icons and symbols you can use to make your maps more usable. Some dungeons get lengthy, and the ability to place autopilot arrows (which can move you between points without direct control, or grind levels for your characters) is a welcome feature.

Etrian Odyssey IV’s battle system is simple at times, and difficult at others. For randomly encountered enemies, an auto-battle feature often takes care of baddies efficiently, while more challenging fights against bosses and FOEs, enemies found throughout dungeons that are often more powerful than you, require you to use your character’s skills more efficiently. Ultimately, this makes the tiny fights littered between larger battles less appealing and not as fun. These tiny altercations are also unskippable, but necessary for leveling your characters so you stand a chance against the big guys.

Etrian Odyssey IV is not the best-looking 3DS game. Presented in 3D, its wall and floor textures seem bland, though the design of enemies is impressive. While the game’s battle music may grate after a while, its soundtrack is excellent overall, mimicking the adventurous tone established by the gameplay.

Etrian Odyssey IV’s sense of adventure is ever present as you explore its wide variety of environments. The game’s lackluster story and occasional difficulty may scare some away, but between the amazing dungeons, challenging battles, and great music, this is an accessible and worthwhile chapter in the series.

TalkBack / N++ Announced, Release Platforms Not Revealed
« on: March 28, 2013, 10:44:45 PM »

The third game in the N series is coming. Which systems will pick it up?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33684

N++, the sequel to N+, was officially announced by developer Metanet Software during a panel at this weeks Game Developers Conference (GDC).

Metanet Software most recently released an entry in the N series on the Nintendo DS in 2008. Since then, the developer has been struggling while attempting to develop games outside of the N franchise.

N++ is set to be the final entry in the N series. After its completion, the developers hope they can move on to new projects.

The original N was released only on the PC, while its sequel N+ was released on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo DS. During the panel, there was no word on what platforms N++ would be heading to, but it will hopefully be available on a Nintendo system once again.
