One of the biggest dedicated apps for streaming anime is now available on Nintendo Switch.

Crunchyroll has been a go-to source of current anime series for over a decade now, offering subtitled anime episodes available on the same day as their premiere on Japanese television. The platform expanded into dubbing in 2016, and has appeared on every major platform, mobile device, and streaming box.

It joins the surprisingly small list of streaming apps on Switch, which currently includes Hulu, Twitch.tv, and YouTube. Crunchyroll's biggest competitor in anime (and sister site under a shared parent company in Sony) Funimation has also been available on Switch for some time now, giving Switch owners more options for anime viewing than ever before. According to the official announcement page, the app will support offline viewing for the service's Mega Fan and Ultimate Fan subscription tiers.

Free download and you can watch shows for free if you don't have a Crunchyroll account. Earlier today there was a glitch where if you scrolled down to the Just updated on Crunchyroll it kicked you out of the app but now you can scroll all the way down to the bottom and watch anything below that point.

There are ads without a log in but typically they don't last long(30 seconds) but you have access to lots of content.

Maybe it's obvious to the initiated, but why is it called "Crunchyroll"? Is it just putting random words together or is there some reason for it?

From what I could find, the founder of the site was a fan of a type of sushi called crunchy rolls (basically includes crunchy ingredients).

What I find interesting is that when Crunchyroll first started they openly let fans illegally upload content they didn't own the rights too (the same thing YouTube did, the founders of YouTune knew people were illegally uploading copyrighted content but didn't do anything about it because it was getting more people to use YoTube).
