I'll just hold out for a discount on the digital copy, assuming the reviews of the Switch version hold up well.
I always think it's BS when the retail copy is just a download code. If i'm buying the retail version, it's because I want the physical copy. If I want to download it, i'll buy the digital copy.
BTW, I also think it's BS when they charge full price for the digital copy. They are saving a lot of money with the digital copy, so they should pass the savings on to us instead of just using that to make extra profit.
We're hitting an awkward transition between physical and digital. I imagine in 10-15 years we will fully be in the "pay a premium for a physical collectors edition" realm. I would imagine the larger publishers will offer what the various limited run-style publishers offer for all games. The big retailers like Target, Walmart, Amazon, and Best Buy still command a large swath of game sales, so they have to put up something in the interim while keeping costs low enough.
I like to think in the future we will be able to just buy blank write-able cards that we could upload games onto. Nintendo did something like that back with the N64DD I recall. You could pay to download a game in a kiosk to a game card, and then overwrite it with another game at a later time.
