Mafia game to be moved to Mafia Forum
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:43:59 AM »
Well, let's see if this gets noticed. I've sent out a message to Megabyte, Crimm, Insanolord and Unclebob but haven't heard anything back from any of them.

Mafia game LVIX has begun in the funhouse in order to keep things on schedule but am looking to get it moved over to the Mafia Forum where it belongs.

There are currently three threads to move over there. The Sign-up thread, Day 1 thread and Day 2 thread. Depending on when this post is read the Day 3 thread will be up in about an hour so it would have to get moved over as well.

I am the person hosting the game so I would need to be granted the moderator status to run it in the forum as well.

Also, would it be best if we use this thread in the future for anyone who is hosting a game to request moderator status here instead of messaging random staff and hoping to get an answer?

Didn't you have the ability to give mod powers back in the day? How hard would it be to go back to those days?

Ha ha. No, I've never been that powerful on these forums. Anybody that wanted to host still had to ask around to get granted mod status. However, I was given a sort of "lifelong" mod status for the forum in that most forum goers recommended it happen as I was most likely to look after it. So, if it took a moment for a host to get the mod ability or he needed some assistance, I was able to make threads, lock threads, do some of that kind of work to help out.

But because of that, I never really had to ask around to get mod status and now that I do, it is somehow become a very frustrating mission as I have had no communication sent back to me from any member of the staff about it despite the fact that everyone I've sent a message to has been online since. I don't know if they think someone else is handling it, or they are busy with other things and just don't care.

I was hoping this thread might help make a difference but still nothing. Maybe there is no more staff and we can all run wild!

I'm surprised there has been such silence from the leadership.

You've inspired me to do just that. Here's how you can benefit from this new revelation as well: There is no mod!

I was in the middle of replying when the tyrannical oppressors of fun speech reigned down upon the house of NO Fun and padlocked the doors. But they left the Mafia loose on the streets.
I see who's lining their pockets with gold VOTES built upon the back of poor villagers.
The system is corrupt. Change must come.

Well, I didn't think it would be interpreted as impersonating staff as the whole joke was about there being no staff but what can you do? At least we finally know they are still around even if they don't say much.

I must say, it is always interesting to read the rules of this forum though. There's always some tidbit that surprises me.

I do not have the power to make someone a mod and don't think it'd be a good idea to move threads into the forum when you don't have the ability to continue the game in said forum.

As far as you getting mod powers back - again, I don't have that ability and have absolutely no say in the situation, but... considering the previous issue, I can understand the hesitation of giving you back the ability to moderate.

Or you could just get off your lazy ass and move the thread. You don't need to give him mod powers Uncleboob.

Agreed.

As far as you getting mod powers back - again, I don't have that ability and have absolutely no say in the situation, but... considering the previous issue, I can understand the hesitation of giving you back the ability to moderate.

I was wondering if that was behind things but I didn't want to bring it up as I think that is something no one really ended up happy about. Which is a shame because it was never intended to be the bloody disaster that it became.

I guess I should comment quickly on it again though if that is the point of hesitation. The only crime I did was add the words Free and Super to titles. Otherwise, the titles were still readable and basically made sense. As the rules say, "Thread titles should clearly indicate the content of the post." So, I did my best to keep it that way and be a bit creative in adding those words to follow that rule. That was it. It should be noted that a couple other members did this as well and were not banned. I also did not bump threads or quickly create pointless threads. Anything I changed was a legitimate in use thread.

Second, I involved other people and explained how best it could be done. The actions others took was not something I asked for or encouraged. When I saw them bumping up threads the night before, I sent messages saying that was not the intent and tried to keep things in check. I only found out about the Talkback fiasco after I was unbanned so I'm still not sure what happened there but never did I think something like that was going to happen or that it could happen. Every time I see someone complain about not being able to edit in the Talkback threads, I grit my teeth because I feel responsible for it and because I have enough sense to know that isn't something you mess with but not everyone has the same restraint I guess. Another reason I'm not happy about that whole plot.

Third, when I came back, I changed the titles of my threads back to the way they were originally as there were many the mods didn't bother with. Some people still haven't and I don't know why. I don't want to be reminded of that campaign anymore. As I explained once before, my intention was for it to be a sort of cheeky protest for a day or so and then back to normal. I'm responsible enough to put my toys away when I'm done playing with them so to speak.

Fourth, I've been on the side of the mods with the whole incident and was not happy with the reaction you were given for it. Again, I guess I thought people would see it the way I saw it and that was the biggest mistake because everyone has their own mindset. But I've always been ready to come to your defense on the matter and am not so arrogant that I think I'm above the rules although I admit I like to riff upon that subversive stance here and there in the forums. Ala the brief, there is no mod thread, for instance. Aside from this, my record has always been clean. No warnings, no reports to the moderators of my posts that I'm aware of. I've never argued or stated that I didn't make a mistake in the SUPER endeavor. Since then, I've just tried to keep working at being a welcome contributing factor to these forums because I do like them and want to see it stay active.

Yes, someone does. Unless you are given mod powers, you can not create threads in that forum. Therefore, the threads would get moved but I'd have to keep making them in the funhouse meaning people would have to keep going back and forth. Plus, it still doesn't solve the issues of not being able to lock threads to prevent people from changing posts later.

How about you give mafia board mod powers to me? I have been a long-standing member of the forum with no record of disruption and a desire to see the mafia games on NWR continue.

Quickly moving beyond the past, let's talk about the future.

If I am given the mod ability, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to use it to smoothly host this game. I'm going to get rid of the words Free and Super from the few titles I added it to in that forum because I've wanted to get rid of them for months. Despite getting a ban for doing so and there now being some hesitancy in granting me mod powers again because of it, it doesn't seem that anyone else cares that those thread titles stay that way. I do because I've always cared about that forum. I'm not asking to be given an unlimited amount of time as moderator again. I'm just asking to be mod to host this game. When it is done, take them away again if you feel so unsure about me. That was what was supposed to be done when it began. When I was just left as a permanent mod, it was because the majority of users felt it appropriate. If you don't think it appropriate now, I'm not going to argue it.

However, that means you have to be checking in on when games are over and when to take that ability away. That is something that never happened. It wasn't until a new host was ready to begin that the change happened. In fact, Maryjane (who disapperared while hosting a game 2 years ago) and Maxi (who abandoned these forums a year ago) were still left as mods for the forum for almost a year. They could have shown up at anytime and just disrupted things if they so felt much like S-U-P-E-R did with the forum rules. If you are really that worried about giving people moderator abilities for the forum, I think that is a hard position for you to argue since there was never any swift action to take them away after.

Frankly, that's always been the risk of giving anyone mod powers for that forum. Would there be a deliberation if there had been enough support when Silenced wanted to try hosting a game? I like the Mafia Forum. If Pale had actually gone through with his grand plan of moving all old mafia threads out of the funhouse and into the Mafia Forum, I think it would be equal to or maybe surpass the Podcast Discussion forum on the Top 10 boards list. In fact, for not using it for almost a year, it still isn't that far behind. I'd love to see that forum climb higher and higher on the charts even though getting past the Handheld Discussion forum might be an unreachable goal. Yet, despite feeling this way, I have to ask. If you aren't going to allow the games to be held in it, what is the point of it right now? An archive?

That's my stance. I'm open for discussion on the matter and have been since contacting you all. I'd welcome feedback on it.

Who can give mod powers? Is there no way we can arrange to have UncleBob or Insano give those powers? They are the most active on the forums and that could straighten things out.

Sorry I haven't been around lately, it's been a rough few weeks for me. Neither UncleBob nor I have he ability to give people mod powers, that requires higher access, someone like Crimm or MegaByte.
Insanolord is a terrible moderator.

I explained exactly why I felt this was not a good idea.  It has nothing to do with me being "lazy" and everything to do with wanting to make sure the game runs smoothly.

Ok. Great. Thanks for making us aware of that. Finally getting some info. It's appreciated.

Having slept and looking over things again this morning, if you want to just delete this whole thread, go for it. I've been posting on this forum for years and have been friends or at least "forum friends" with many different staff. Thus, I think you should have a good idea of my personality. Maybe it is different from how I view myself but that is probably true for anybody.

As such, I highly doubt anything I can say is going to change it. If the view is I'm dangerous, well then, I guess I'll just have to live with being the bad boy of these forums. At least I'll be popular with the women. All 3 of them. For the record and to my knowledge, I've never heard of a single complaint being made with my time handling that forum.

However, I still stand by the fact that you will now have to figure out what you want to do with the mafia forum going forward. Are you only going to allow certain people mod powers because you think them acceptable and others you deem unacceptable have to host in the Funhouse? Are you just going to move threads there when games are done and make it an archive? Open it up to a free forum where anyone can create a topic which means you'd have to add it to your moderation? Shut it down completely?

I wasn't sure if this would be it for mafia games but it has gotten a lot of talk from people of wanting to do it more again. It might not happen or it may. If it does, you'll be facing this issue again especially since I often have to host to keep this game regular. At the moment, the solution seems similar to Nintendo's response to Swapnote. Shut down the service completely because of the actions of a few despite having people who like using it and are loyal to using it. A lot of people have been upset with Nintendo because they feel it was a brash decision and that they shouldn't be so draconian and pointed out all sorts of other methods of how the system could be abused. Therefore, what next? A reply only forum where the staff make all the topics to ensure no title changes and determine what is to be discussed and what itsn't? An approval first forum where every post, topic, edit has to be approved by a staff member first before being permitted to go through on the forum? What I've done on this forum has never been near anything as serious as the real life crime of child porn. Yet, in seems in both cases of major and minor offenses, the answer in both cases is shut it down.

That's all.
