Overlord: Dark Legend
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:50:32 PM »
An ALL-NEW game based off of the underrated gem for 360 and PS3!

~ Prequel to the original game
~ Designed from the ground up: new story, new characters, new gameplay additions
~ Same four minion types, but they will have new abilities

More info and screens here!

I found the original to be a lot of fun, and I'll most likely get this one too thanks to it NOT BEING A BLOODY DIRECT PORT! =D

Heh, for a moment I thought you had posted this in the wrong forum.

So, are those Wii screens or 360 screens?

I find it funny how the game that is basically a take on Pikmin will be on a console that will have a third Pikmin game soon.

His excuse: This is a PREQUEL to the main game. I am tired of third parties supporting Nintendo with half assed spin offs, prequels and off shoot titles based off of REAL games on the PS3 and 360.

I think it's very interesting to look at the Publishers of the games you listed...

High Voltage Software, Deep Silver, Codemasters... these are mid-level companies making their moves on the Wii, an area where I think Nintendo should really focus on if they want to garner support. The big companies are too slow to shift strategies (well, Capcom is surprisingly nimble) and too inertially invested in the other consoles.

Nintendo should put effort into aggressively courting companies like Atlus, Eidos/SCi, NIS, Disney, Hudson, and other companies of similar size or market position. These companies are perfectly situated to, I believe, be sold on the concept of becoming the next big thing on the Wii without much competition from Squaresoft, Konami, etc.

Kairon, you forgot Telltale Games. Even though their first game is a port of an existing PC series (Sam and Max) they did provide the Wii with an awesome game for WiiWare (Strong Bad), and with the first episode being a big success I see them collaborating more with Nintendo.

I wonder if they are going to make a Wii port of Wallace and Gromit since they are working on that as well.

With Wallace and Gromit having a lot of fans in the animation world it would be dumb of them NOT to port it.

The game simply begs for it to be on the Wii.

That is true, though the 360 one is hard to beat, it is actually really great looking game. Not like it really matters that much though if they stay to the spirit of the gameplay and get the framerate at a respectable level!

the 360 game had a ton of bloom but it fit with graphical syle. The characters were cartoonish and fairly low-poly so it looks like they are using the same character models on the wii game. The plot of the 36o game was reclaiming your destroyed Kingdom from corrupted fantasy heroes. I'm guessing this prequel will be the Overlord building his kingdom for the first time.

Jonny according to Climax they are fully taking advantage of custom coding from TEV, but games in 2009 really show what the Wii is made of if they actually take the time and do the TEV coding because it really shows.

Quote from: From Interview
We know that, ultimately, if we make an Overlord game that is really good, then it will find an audience. Games that is good tends to be the game that sells, that’s all we can focus on from the development side.

I'm glad somebody understands this. The game has a lot of promise, looking forward to it especially since we have no idea yet when Pikmin 3 is coming. I would guess at the earliest we will see a new Pikmin this Fall/'Holiday shipping window' but more realistically it wont come until 2010. Overlord will be out this summer so I don't too much competition with any of the Pikmins unless the 2nd Pikmin remake is released this summer as well.

Wow, that really does look nice. It honestly does look like the 360 game. I'm sure side by side you could see the difference but it still is impressive.

Like Jonny has said before, this is the kind of graphical performance we should expect from developers on the Wii, it is capable of much better graphics than most of its titles show.

I really don't see what your point is? Is it wrong to be impressed with what they are doing with Wii? That it actually resembles the 360 game? Doesn't mean the game will be fantastic but the developer deserves credit for pushing the Wii more then most are.

Like Golden said, the reason people are impressed with Overlord is that so far the game looks identical to the 360 version, without any sacrifices made and some real proof of effort being put into this game.

Its not really about graphics, its about the effort and that's what is making people take notice.

A pretty strange observation I'd say. Personally I am GLAD to see it looking decent visually and it having a fluid framerate because I am quite sure the gameplay will be just as good as its predecessor which is an amazing game. The visuals show me they are trying with this and aren't slapping together a downgraded port of the 360 version like so many other games have in the past where you can tell from the visuals it was not built from the ground up.

Not necessarily. I just find it curious that when a game looks similar to something from a different console, everyone goes ape ****. I don't even see the point in comparing graphics. To me it seems like a superficial way to ramp up the value of the console you purchased. But hey, that's just me I guess.

Must be why I own a PC with the best graphic card available, a 360 and a PS3 right? You are obviously missing the point about why people are excited, it isn't about the graphics but the fact it looks like they aren't just sloppily throwing it on Wii like so many other 3rd parties are but are instead are showing love and care via the visuals, which emphasize the fact that they are a 3rd party developer taking the Wii seriously. Not to mention it looks to be doing things others acted like Wii could not do, so in a way it shows how ridiculously lazy 3rd parties have been.

Why good graphics in a Wii game matter? Because of the presumption of equal effort: A dev who puts enough effort into a Wii game to make it look good (and even push past what was thought possible) obviously put a lot of effort into the Wii version and there's a good chance the other parts of the game will have received a lot of effort too.

With the Wii being my main console I learned to not care so much about graphics and worry about the gameplay and controls.

That said, if I see a Wii game (especially a third party game) that looks and plays great I applaud the effort.

The problem with third parties on the Wii is that they downgrade their HD efforts very badly, making the game look really bad, and there's the chance the gameplay doesn't hold up as well as it should.

So once more, the reason we are going ga-ga over Overlord's visuals and gameplay is because this looks to be a well polished Wii game and the fact that its happening makes us very happy.

The Overlord seems a lot more spry in this one, but he feels a little less imposing for it.  It's good to see that exploding haystacks don't wipe out your minions in this game, too.

I'm a little worried that this game, Little King's Story and the Pikmin (and possibly also Pikmin 2) Wii-make all coming out within a few months of each other might be too much of a good thing.

For not begin graphix w4or3s, you guys are sure putting a lot of emphasis on the visuals.

What's wrong with being a Wii 'graphix w4or3'?

Not necessarily. I just find it curious that when a game looks similar to something from a different console, everyone goes ape ****. I don't even see the point in comparing graphics. To me it seems like a superficial way to ramp up the value of the console you purchased. But hey, that's just me I guess.

When you can't play the game yet, you don't have much to go on when looking at impending games. What else can we go on other than pictures, videos and interviews.

I'm a little worried that this game, Little King's Story and the Pikmin (and possibly also Pikmin 2) Wii-make all coming out within a few months of each other might be too much of a good thing.

Pikmin 1 will be out March 3rd if IGN is to be believed and do we even have a tentative date for #2? Is it even confirmed for US yet (I know its close to inevitable)?

The only competition that is assured will be King's Story if it doesn't get delayed again. 'Course, Pikmin 1 could go evergreen a la Mario Kart and steal everybody's sales.

Your first question has a simple answer: nothing. Nothing's wrong with being a graphix whore, it's just hypocritical if you aren't.

And secondly, I'm not talking about looking at pictures and videos to get an idea of a game. I'm talking about the 360 vs. Wii comparison. I just find them ridiculous. This whole nonsense that simply because a game looks comparable to 360 equates to developers giving a **** about the Wii,, thus we must drool over the game even though we have no idea about the outcome. It's obnoxiously retarded.

What's really fascinating is the perception. It's right here in this thread; jaded and almost vagrant.

Noone's saying the game is guaranteed to be good but that the chances are way higher than, say, the chances that a random Wii/PSP crossplatform game will be good.

That sombrero unfortunately makes the game look like Overlord: Minions Party, but it does get across the minions' comedic nature pretty well.

I want a pet minion now.

Can I have the red one?

Do you have a lot of things you need set on fire?  A red one would be too dangerous.  The green ones stink, so only the blue and brown ones are worth keeping as pets.  It's too dry around here, so I could only keep a brown one.  I wouldn't want to, personally, since the first thing he'd do would be to run into my kitchen and grab my biggest knife and put a pot on his head, and I'd never get them away from him.

So the next time I need you to do something I should just threaten to mail you a brown minion? I wanted the red one because it had that cool sombrero. Though it sounds like the blue one would be best for me because I live in a very rainy region (since you say it likes damp places).

I just now watched a video of this game, and I hope it doesn't get over looked since I hear it plays better than the 360 & PS3 games.
From what I've been hearing, the pointer controls & smooth frame rate really make the difference in this game vs the HD versions.

I also hear the humor is intact for the Wii version, and you can play it kinda like a RTS if you want.

I'm impressed with the free Minion toy.  Tho it's out-of-place among my anime girls, so he stays in the box.

Har Har. Have you noticed any game bugs or significant drops in frame rate?

I've never played it. =O

Was working on Tenchu videos while falling asleep in my chair, plus tonight marks the beginning of BWii Wiikend.

I'll give it a go on my day off tomorrow.

Good job, Codemasters.  This is a sign that you care.

Quick impressions after only completing the first two quests:

Graphics are simply astounding for the Wii.  They've got some really impressive shader tech going on here with all the grass in the outdoor environments.  I'm not seeing the silky-smooth 60 FPS I had been led to expect, but slight slowdown is hardly noticeable.  (I only have 10 minions in my horde so far.. I'm looking forward to seeing how many their engine can handle simultaneously.)

I'm having a lot of trouble "sweeping" my minions over things.  They have difficulty figuring out where it is I want them to go (even though the green "sweep" icon and blue target are pretty easy to manipulate using the Wii pointer) and often just clump up at the base of a ramp instead of streaming up it like I want them to.  And strangely when you "sweep" your horde across treasure, potions or lifeforce they don't seem to want to pick it up.  It's not until you release the B button and allow them some autonomy that they will gather anything up.  It's better technique to simply order them to attack something with B then to try and sweep them over it.

The new "throttling" move that makes use of the Wii's waggle seems tacked on.. but I'll bet I need it in some boss battles later on.  I'm reserving judgment to see how hard it is to execute in the heat of battle.

I'm enjoying the origin plotline and seeing where some of the characters from the first Overlord game came from.  The humor and sickness of the first game are intact, and I'm enjoying the ability to furnish my castle by accomplishing side-quests.  If you enjoyed Overlord then I think you'll enjoy Dark Legends.  And I'm looking forward to seeing what other new features they've added in here.  A worthy addition to the series.

Promising game so far.  Climax is certainly talented in applying Wii graphics.  And yes, the very beginning of the game gives you a false sense of hope when you run around the castle with 60fps, then everything drops to 30fps (maybe lower) once you go outside.  Clear disappointment, and they'd better not mess up this same way on Silent Hill.

Minion gameplay and atmosphere is awesome awesome.  Great sense of humor.  I'm delighted a lot of objects are drawn in for the purpose of being destroyed.

Too bad about the framerate switch. This is the first I've heard of it.

Have there been any reviews yet or is everything ground to a halt because of Conduit?

I'll look around Stratos.

I'm happy with thinking pokepal148 is just eating a stick of butter. It seems about right for him. I don't need no stinking facts.

Wow, I was looking on IGN but I didn't see the review. A little crazy to see those scores. Time to do some reading, thanks Maxi.
